Dexter was always sneaking off to kill ppl lol wouldn't you wonder what he was doing if you were Rita? Yes. But I wouldn't be randomly satiated by his explanations where it fits the story. When she finds out he slept with another woman she becomes FURIOUS and their relationship almost completely falls apart. Then just a few weeks later when that woman KIDNAPS HER CHILDREN AND ALMOST BURNS THEM TO DEATH she just kinda giggles and says "I'm just glad you're ok, Dexter." Also I'm pretty sure Deb has some "depth" but you're either ignoring it or failing to recognize it. Being vaguely disturbed for 2 episodes of season 2 and then almost never mentioning it again is not a realistic depiction of how a trauma like that would affect someone's life. I've learned that pointing out holes in stories can ruin almost any good show or movie. You just have to let it go and remember that it's fiction. These things didn't actually happen so the holes don't really matter. Just forget about it and enjoy it for what it is - a damn good show. No... That logic applies to something like "Human beings can't really fly" and thus not enjoying Superman. Good writing and character development is a giant part of a show, particularly for a drama (as opposed to comedies where things can tend to be thinner as the primary goal is a laugh). Dexter is enjoyable, but I disagree that it's a "damn good show". The dialogue is laughably bad at times, almost all the characters have no depth and switch on and off arbitrarily as the story demands, and apparently all murders in the Miami metro area (about 5.5 million population) are investigated by like 6 cops (that last point is the only real "suspend your disbelief" point I see with Dexter, that bit of non-realism doesn't really undercut the show that much).

I don't regret watching season's 1-4. I respect the show for what it is. I have a hard time agreeing with many people who believe it is great, creative television and writing.

Good writing and character development is a giant part of a show, particularly for a drama What made you think character development is a giant part of Dexter? I don't think that's why anyone watches. Dexter's only flaw here is that they still try.

Because if you have terrible writing and no character development I might as well just watch the news if I want to hear about murders with no connection to the story.

That being said, Lumen ended up being even more annoying because she was so god damn stupid. And just when the villains started to develop into interesting characters they were killed in the last couple of episodes. I still enjoy it though and have hope it will return to its former glory. Really the only seasons I didn't love are 3 and 5.
