BP3 was a big indicator of where he wanted to take his music, so I totally don't understand the whole 'wow this jayz album sucks wtf why aint it like reasonable doubt' like wtf are any of you expecting nas's next album to be illmatic level? let's be real here. uhhhh and not the type of 'real' that rappers are, heh. In this day and age, Life is Good is a masterpiece. my expectations probably won't be met for his next release but who knows!

When were anyone's expectations met for a Nas album. Life is Good was probably the closest thing to meeting people's expectations because by then he hadn't released a good album since Stillmatic. And for the first 10 years after Illmatic even if people liked the album they were still expecting the next Illmatic.

Didn't expect to enjoy it this much the first time through considering my usual ability to digest hip-hop and what I'd read about it. In general I have no idea what he is talking about, though I'm enjoying it, and the production is fucking incredible. I think I am getting better at doing this first listen shit, in general recently my first reading has been pretty precise whether I'll like it, it used to be absolute dogshit, the first listen of an album was just a token hour of dissatisfaction to pave ways for later enjoyment. also this may be one of the absolute funniest lines ever, I actually LOLed when I heard it: Don't mind me, I wrote this rhyme lightly Off a two or three Heines, and boy was they fine gee One Black, One Spanish, One Chiney

If its new i: -Listen to it on its own and get a feel for the sound -loop it while doing other things (games, etc) -eventually sit down with the lyrics and go song by song If i like it enough: -keep listening till i know each songs title by listening, then write a piece on it The latter usually takes months to get to, and i barely even write about it most of the time. Like, WTT i just listen to a ton but i dont bother with writing about it bc it doesnt help me appreciate it

I've got a a big ol' stack of CDs to go through that I got as a present, looking forward to it, this was just the start, for the next couple of weeks, I'ma be on an absurd hip hop binge, its gonna be awesome. Madvillainy The Slim Shady LP 808s and Heartbreak Speakerboxxx/The Love Below Southernplayadalisticadillacmuzik Cancer4Cure 12 Reasons to Die Skelethon For TSSL, 808 and the Outkast ones I had listened to a bucket load of the individual songs, never actually gotten the albums proper. In terms of how I listen, it changes each time, but in general follows a basic pattern: First time generally while either walking the dog, or on a relatively long journey somewhere, generally by bus or car (I do these 3 things at least 4 times in a normal week). This is just to just to catch a vibe from it without interruption, not for analysis or anything like that. Second time just sorta by itself, generally with access the computer to check a some lyrics, and maybe doing some light reading around the album. After that, its pretty much in any situation where I feel like listening to the album, maybe occasionally on shuffle, in short bursts, or all the way through again. If an album really proves itself through that period I'll go back to the written lyrics and read more about the album and just listen more intently to really find what the album offers, and generally just think a lot about what I feel about the album, cause I enjoy that immensely, and for good albums can be hugely satisfying. If an album gets past that stage and I'm still really interested, I'll probably start playing it occasionally to my friends and talking about it with them (none of whom really like hip hop at all) just cause I love it so much that I want to either discuss it, enthuse about it and share it with them. I have a couple of people (who don't like hip hop) but that enjoy talking about it with me, just because its interesting and we have great conversations about stuff. For Madvillainy itself I basically did what I normally do for the 2nd listen on the 1st listen, in front of the computer, with more reading then usual, about other stuff in general, and about the album.

And excited for your album list for you. Specially the Outkast ones. Speakerboxx/TLB was one of the first 2 albums I saved up for as a kid (can't remember if it was that one or Stillmatic). Southernplayadalisticadillacmuzik rocked my world when I heard it of course. And it was years after release (26, I'm not that old). Happy listening.

![]() Should be no shame in having not listened to an album, no matter how revered, its not like everyone has infinite time to listen to music (if only ![]() I'm hyped for some Outkast as well man, I fucking love Stankonia, Aquemini and ATliens, some of my favourite music ever on those albums, I cant wait to add to that love.

And about Illmatic, haha, no I actually think it might be a little overrated sometimes too ^^. And to your point about not getting to all albums, the 3 outkast ones you mentioned are actually 3 of theirs I haven't really ever heard through (maybe ATL like once).

Has anyone listened to Big Boi's first non-Outkast album Vicious Lies and Dangerous rumours? It's not what you expect from the guy who was always the more traditional rapper in Outkast.

Edit: plus those music downloading days were difft for poor kids =p. You were happy to find and wait a half hour to d/l a song so d/l albums was not happening. Like aquemini was a burnt copy a friend had if IRC and i borrowed it once, and stankonia was one of those seminal albums where almost everyone had a burnt copy at one point. I actually remember trying to memorize BOB in my room now that I think about it lol.

It's a shame they're probably never going to release another album now Andre 3000 just makes a career off killing other artists on their own songs. Its actually his second since Outkast, the first (Sir Luscious Left Foot) was massively critically acclaimed, I've got it and its pretty great, I really need to revisit a bit more though. I'd still recommend it. I haven't listened to Vicious Lies yet, apparently its not quite as good as the first.
