Well let's end it here with the french bashing. I just read Volaire's Candide btw. Lol, what a french prick interesting person.

I'd answer that if I knew from which part of Switzerland you were
Also Voltaire is a prick, but a very funny one !
In other news, ordered 15 books (!), and finished Tacitus' Annals. Good book, wish I could read it in Latin though, he was my favourite writer to translate.
Now I'm starting Nausea, which should please farva :p

you would like to read a book in Latin...
does not compute

Why, you've never read a book in a foreign language ?

i have read a book in latin.
hence my question why you would do that voluntary

If I tried to read a real german book with my current level, I have no doubt it would be a painful experience...

hey man, dont hate on my latin skill ; (

Hey, I'm not, you're probably ten times better than what I am, but as its pretty rare to find someone who is truely fluent in Latin...

Absolutely not.

As for Swiss authors, I'm a fan of good ole Huldrych Zwingli myself. Other than that, y'all can't even hold a lighter to the French. So off to the Dan Brown section with you!

More seriously, I think the biggest divide in this thread is between people who read mainly fantasy and people who don't. We could be much worse off.

Wait a moment, are you identifying yourself as French?
There isn't a more hardcore horror-fantasy book than "The Black Spider" by Jeremias Gotthelf. Shat my pants as I had to read it during school.

I think you are very right. But you have to admit that it is a bit strange that every other person in this thread seems to find great joy in reading litterature that is incomprehensive for the vast majority of society. I don't think i have seen anyone in this thread who read Dostojevskij or Tolstoj and not praising them as the greatest thing that has happened to humanity. Just like a few months ago where apparently Ulysses was the greatest literary work.

I really liked that quote by Nietzsche:
"Whoever knows he is deep, strives for clarity; whoever would like to appear deep to the crowd, strives for obscurity. For the crowd considers anything deep if only it cannot see to the bottom"

I just finished The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus yesterday, and while i think that his ideas on the absurd is interesting, i don't think it adds anything to the work that that is written in a way that is hard to understand. Admittetly that could be the result of poor translation, but i prefer books with more than three to four sentences per page.

To be honest i never read anything by Tolstoy but i believe that most people would not even attempt to read a +1000 page book at all.
