I just hope they don't cop out like kill Han Solo in the first movie. I get the feeling he is going to be a Kenobi type mentor to this duo and they'll make him sacrifice himself for the new generation.

It would be extremely lazy writing, and would put the movie 'worst than phantom menace' tier

Edit: don't know how they could make his death not cheesy

Well Timothy Zahn said it pretty well:

"My vision of Star Wars is good vs evil, with the heroes struggling to win, and the major characters making it through. (Otherwise, either Lando or Wedge would have died inside the second Death Star.)"
History will sooner or later sweep the European Union away without mercy.

Haven't followed it at all. I'll probably go see it 1-2 weeks after release, after christmas. Unless people say it's really poor. What's the average feeling ? Excited or cautious ?

I am pretty confident in J.J. Abrams and his writers. This film will be way better than the prequels (not that its hard admittedly) just like his Star Trek movies were way better than the ones before. Hollywood has overall learned since the early 2000s when they depended way too much on their special effects for success.

I don't know about better, faster paced, more explosions sure, but objectively better? I wouldn't go that far. I say that as a temperate Trekkie in that I don't mind ST Into Darkness.

Well if we regard film critics as objective than they are objectively better. On Rotten Tomatoes Insurrection and Nemesis have 55% and 37%, the JJA films have 95% and 87%, thats a different level. The 2010 film even won an Oscar, first Star Trek to do so.

Those are pretty much the worst Trek movies out there. No one can defend Nemesis and Insurrection, though it is funny to see Tom Hardy as Picard's clone.

Using RT as a benchmark First Contact, and Wrath of Khan are about on par with both the JJ ST films, but I don't take that as gospel.

Skip to the end, and I think JJ is much more capable of making a good star wars movie than a canon trek film. I like the JJ Trek films for what they are, but they are already closer to Star Wars than Trek if that makes sense.

JJ also said he was never into Star Trek but was a huge fan of Star Wars. He also said he prefered it because there was more action, which is unfortunate.

Which would explain it, I think they are entertaining movies with a star trek flavor, not a, entertaining star trek movie. Much better equipped for SW.

When people asked him about that further, he said that Star Trek’s tone suitable for a TV show that is on a weekly budget, but it needed more for big screen movies. I do agree that the sort of stage plays that made up much of TNG and TOS are not viable as a feature film. The first reboot was fine, the second one was a bit much. But they can pull it back in the third one.

And when it comes to Starwars and why it’s timeless, the core of the first 3 movies were characters rising out of apathy and being trapped in their current lives to do something good and larger than themselves. A common criminal becoming a general and a farm boy becoming the last of a forgotten order of space knights. And the vague spirituality of the Force that drove characters to the worst or best aspects of themselves was critical for it being so popular across the world. Plus the implied story of a Vader and his desire to reconnect with his son and maybe redeem himself.

The prequels lost all of that and picked up a bunch of sci-fi garbage made them lesser films with bigger special effects. There is no battle between father and son where the son only want to redeem his father.

There was plenty of room for something like that with Obiwan/Anakin.

But well, for that you would need actual characters and good dialogs and.. and....

Sad part is, it really wouldn't be hard to come up with a halfway decent story that leads to a believable turning from Anakin and a true climax between him and Obiwan... Not just a 30 Minute lightsaber dance with a terrible ending..

The key is that they would have needed to focus on that relationship in the films, rather than just lean on the fact that you know they were friends because Obi said so in Ep4. But they didn’t and were more concerned with garbage, CGI special effects and terrible lightsaber fights.

Beats are pretty sick. Notorious BIG is obviously beyond epic. Not sure if either of those do each other justice by being mixed though.

I just watched SW Rebels, I got to say it is very well done, who are the writers? It got me much more than the prequels, is incredible that an animated series can be better than a "real" movie, at least for me.

I'm a big fan of stuff like this. I just found Wugazi which is a mix of Fugazi and Wu Tang this year. I'll just file the biggie mix under Star Wars Day, holiday music. I see what you mean though, not all tip top hip hop, but fun.

They were focused in the relationship but the wrong one, Anakin and Padme, sometimes I hate more those scenes than the stupid Jar Jar..

I feel very bad for both of the actors in all of those scenes. Really, everyone should watch Portman's PR interviews from Episode 3. They are great stuff.

If you liked Rebels, then you should try The Clone Wars. It is basically how the prequels should of been done.

Should have*

And yes, you should watch TCW since it was done by the same crew that's doing SWR.
