I saw Vader as someone who was ruthless, cold, unstoppable and willing to replace any damage with machine parts to continue in struggle. That his wounds were not just cased by Obi Wan, but by every Jedi he has killed and hunted down. That they wounded and maimed him, only so he could comeback as strong as before. Of course this version of Vader was undercut by the 1-3 when we see his full transformation on film. And that somehow diminished it for me. That he was built in a single act just cheapened it, made him a product of a neat movie plot and not decades of hunting Jedi.
And Luke I saw as someone who was willing to challenge Vader based on pure nerve and youthful talent. That he was faster, had more to fight for and was every bit as talented as his father. But he was also willing to use the dark side to protect his friends, which ultimately allows him to defeat Vader. It’s why the last battle has the weight that it does. That Luke is closer to the dark side than he has ever been, Vader is closest to being redeemed and in the end they both reject the dark side. And supported my favorite theory that Jedi are force users who have tapped into the dark side, but ultimately reject it. But they never tell their students that is the path they must walk because it leads to corruption, that the path to enlighten must be self learned.
The point is that who is strong in the force has never been a big point in the films for me. The force has always just been a narrative reason for awesome sword fights and framing shots between light and dark.
I don't have a good response to this yet but I just wanted to acknowledge what a beautiful post this was.
My first exposure to Batman was the 60s TV show and I fucking loved it when I was like 5 and 6. Then later on I found out that the version I thought was cool was loathed by hardcore Batman fans who only wanted Loner Bad Ass Batman. I felt bad about it for a while. But then I have moved on and realized that those fans don't own Batman and I can have my own version of Batman that I like(Lego Batman is pretty dope).
And I don't hate 1-3 that much. They are "workman like" in quality. There are cool moments in them. Obi Wan and Ani could have just been a buddy cop movie and it would have been much better. Obi Wan, Space Private Eye was pretty fun too. And his little space ship was so awesome, with its little hyper space booster thing. That fight with Fett on that space platform might be the best in the entire 3 movies.
The thing I hate is trying to talk about Star wars and then having someone come in and debate it like comic books super hero show downs. Who is talents and has a higher force power level due to his dad fucking shit super force lady and therefor their baby is in face Esports Jesus in space and could crush the death star. I find that stuff surface level and boring as fuck. I am way more interested in narrative, story archs, context and the motivations of characters. Rey and Kylo are just kids with force powers and Rey won because she wanted it more. And Kylo was shot and wounded by two other main characters before she got to him.
But that is just me. People can enjoy the extending universe with its super powered, Skywalker flying circus. Just like I enjoy 60s Batman because its so fucking amazing. Just accept that I don't care and mostly take the movies as pretty self contained works.
Edit: Thanks folks, I like me some star wars. But I am the firm believer that head cannon is just as powerful as "true cannon".

There's no Episode 8 thread yet, and I think this is probably the most pertinent place to post this.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in 293 days, but it sounds like the film isn’t actually done filming yet. Thanks to a rumor making its way across the internet right now, The Last Jedi is getting ready to go through some reshoots (uh oh), and it’s for the most heartbreaking reason: Carrie Fisher.
Carrie passed away in late December 2016, and at the time, it was announced that yes, she had completed all of her filming for The Last Jedi. But, what about the Star Wars movie(s) after that? Disney and Lucasfilm had a meeting in January, where it was assumed the Star Wars brain trust gathered together and figured out what to do with Princess General Leia for The Last Jedi, and also, Star Wars: Episode IX.
At the time, it sounded like nothing for The Last Jedi would need to be reworked for our General. However now, it seems that’s not the case anymore. According to Project Casting (a casting agency), there’s an open call out for extras in in Edinburgh and Scotland for “walk-on roles.” They’re looking for actors between the ages of 16 and 90 (okay, sure), and filming will take place from March onward. (Also, since you’re probably wondering, YES, the shoot is catered, so free Star Wars food!)
As we’ve recently learned when it comes to Star Wars, reshoots are common. Every movie in Hollywood goes through reshoots after they’ve wrapped filming. But, YouTuber Mike Zeroh, (who has Star Wars sources) suggests that these reshoots are actually directly related to Carrie.
“It has been rumored that some of Carrie Fisher’s major scenes from Episode VIII will be cut from the film,” he explains in his video. “I think that what they’re going to be doing is modifying the scenes perhaps to make them all the more special and… bring an interesting tribute to her as a person.”
Though not confirmed, it’s believed that Carrie had TWO big scenes coming up: A reunion with her brother, Luke, and one with her son, Ben Kylo Ren. One (or even both of them) might have been filmed and will be included in The Last Jedi — but maybe not anymore. It’s impossible to figure out what will be included in the reshoots, or even if any of the other main cast members will be there. Right now, all signs point to them being for Carrie.
Or, these reshoots could have nothing to do with Carrie’s passing, and it’s simply to add in more scenes of people cheering for Poe Dameron or something IDK. We’ll find out December 15th.
In truth, it's probably for the best. There is little that can be done about a death and this is the most effective way of dealing with a death like this.
I don't like the emotional reactions that I feel I should dub "hysterical Rey." They somehow feel out of place.
What was actually most interesting to me here was Kylo Ren and his development into a cold-hearted master of evil. It's only hinted at but it looks like it is well done.
They seem to be leaning into expanding universe beyond the Jedi. Maybe touching on the idea that the Jedi Order was not as perfect as legend says and they fell for a reason. I could also be into some fleet and speeder combat.
Edit: I hope hysterical Rey is dealt with in a way impresses the idea that mastering the Force is terrifying and dangerous. And I doubt Kylo is going to become the monster he wants to be. I said before that I think Kylo is obsessed with finding Luke because in the back of his mind he hopes Luke will stop him. Much like Vader, there are fun ways to read into his actions if you assume that he subconsciously seeks redemption .
I'm 98% sure it's just going to be Luke saying "so they tried teach my dad to be a Jedi and it went horribly wrong and a bunch of people died and then I tried to teach my nephew to be a Jedi and basically the same shit happened so I think we should stop teaching people to be Jedi until we work out where the fuck we're going wrong".
And then Rey will say something inspiring and then Luke will train her anyway.
Oh i hope not, that would be lame. I think and hope it's more about finding a balance between dark and light within a force user, no side being actually "evil". No idea if that works with the lore, i really only know the 7 movies. But that sounds more interesting to me than simply having evil and good guys all the time, i hope they go that route of a more nuanced pov.
That would be bad. I hope that it is Rey seeking out the original teachings of the Jedi before they became part of the larger Republic and government. Get into the idea of the Jedi as wandering heroes that represent the light side of the force, rather than “the government”. Because we have not seen that and it is way more interesting that a bunch of space wizards that perform police actions on behalf of democracy.
Hoping the film explores the lore further about the Force, especially with the concept of balance from the individual force user's standpoint. Can't stray too far into the light, as well as the dark or bad things happen.

also maybe for there to be balance in the force what has to happen is NO MOAR SKYWALKERS. so luke, kylo, and rey if she is a skywalker all gots to die. that would be interesting.
I mean it didn't give away much plot, but the theme seems to be clear? Luke wants to do something NEW with the training of the force, no simple black and white, "it's even bigger". So we will see some training, some new lore/mysticism and how the conflict will be created exactly? Well we will see.
