There are a lot of things that are done well, but the storyline lacks the gravitas that one would expect from a Star Wars movie. I guess this movie is similar to Episode IV in that regard, but even more lacking. I get the sense that Episodes VIII and IX will likely alter our perceptions of this movie by bringing context to much of what has been left unexplained. Also, the action sequences are a little too slick. Not enough danger for the good guys. agreed, exactly what i told a friend. felt way too much like a tribute/homage movie towards ANH. I did enjoy it however. on its own, i'd give it a 7.5/10. But i'm pretty sure that would change with episode 8 and 9 (hopefully), when we get to watch the entire trilogy together

I loved Finn and Rey as characters. The end was rushed, but overall the movie was very good.

+ Show Spoiler + And so much from the events that took place was just copied from episode 4 (Robot in desert with important data, save girl on death star, death star destroying planets, old dude dies on death star, destroy the death star) In the end it was a good movie but I had very high expectations for it. -edit was a little bit negative, the comedy was great, all the praise it gets for it's visuals is 100% warranted and the characters (and the acting) feels way more solid than in the prequels.

However, if it turns out that Episode VII was just made that way, to please to fans and has no underlying greater concept in the overall story, then I am very disappointed because it still feels cheap.

Well There arent really any moments were it´s like: Look, it´s 3D, it´s coming at ya! Which is good. If you like 3D in any other movie, then I´d say it´s up to those standards, but in the end it does not really add to the movie, not too many scenes that play with it too much. For most of it actually I totally forgot I´m sitting in a 3D film xD

Some scenery put 3D to absolutely wonderful use, but I felt I had a much better overview of what happened without it in many action scenes. I felt a bit disjointed at times in the beginning with 3D, but that almost completely went away when I managed to snatch a seat closer to the centre of the theatre. It felt like where you sit in the theatre is very important when you watch in 3D.

The only shot in the whole movie that looked better in 3D was the very close up shot of the Star Destroyer. Other than that, everything else was better in 2D.

Pacing was definitely an issue, I think the frenetic pace is the reason there wasn't more struggle. I.e. at no point does the audience think the good guys are going to fail, they achieve their goals so easily in every case. I don't really hold it against the movie because they had A LOT of ground to cover. My hope is that the next 2 move a bit more slowly and allow for natural conflict to develop now that the story is established.

I thought the movie was good overall. IMO there was too many "yuck yucks" for the kids. I guess its been a while since I've watched the classics but I feel like besides Return of the Jedi with the Ewoks, the first two films were fairly dark in comparison. There weren't many jokes for the family and kids. Call me a scrooge but I don't care for the cheap lazy comedy relief. Ending felt rushed, there was a lot of fan service, a lot of lucky accidents and forced situations. I agree that it never felt like the heroes were ever in any real danger. Overall I like Rey as a character though she's not without her faults. I was happy with it but it could have been better. Didn't live up to my expectations going in since the trailers had me hyped as fuck. Just a random aside. + Show Spoiler [Kylo] + Did anyone else feel Kylo looked a bit off? Considering who his parents are wouldn't you think they'd have a better looking son? I dunno, his face seemed a little fucked to me.

1. What if Luke hadn't left his hometown in time to avoid stormtroopers? 2. What if Luke and Obi-Wan had found a less competent pilon than Han/Chewie? 3. What if they didn't let Luke, Leia, and Han escape but instead decided to continue with torture? 4. What if the Falcon had been late to save Luke? What if he had been a wee bit late to fire? 5. What if Lando hadn't decided to change his mind and help Leia/Chewie escape? etc. That isn't the proper way to criticize Star Wars, and it's much easier to enjoy when you give it leeway on logic.

If you go back and watch the OT, there's actually a lot of comedy/light-heartedness. It's actually pretty surprising.
