Another thing I like about the series is that it doesn't seem as black and white as TLA (which was fine) with the Fire Nation led by Fire Lord Ozai being the genocidal warmongers trying to take over the world. Amon doesn't seem (yet) to be some psychopathic "pure evil" dude like Ozai. Like other people have pointed out, he uses non-lethal tactics (despite being a terrorist). It seems more like he actually believes he's a revolutionary fighting against an oppressive regime and unjust social order (an obvious generic mirroring of Communist revolutions). I think we'll see more of the show from an Equalist perspective with moral ambiguities or dilemmas of social justice. Also it's interesting how all of this takes place in Republic City, which is similar to the rapidly modernizing Shanghai of the 1920s developed by the Nationalists in the fledgling Republic of China, which became the People's Republic of China after the civil war between the Nationalists and Communists. I think of this parallel as a curiosity rather than something intentional and I don't think the show will be so overtly political or reflective of any particular historical events. I certainly don't think it will promote any sort of partisan view, but the creators probably intended for the show to be politically thought-provoking. | ||
