The two options we have for rulesets are Pathfinder (an extension of the Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 edition ruleset) and Dungeons and Dragons 4th edition.

Pathfinder is more complicated than 4th edition, but offers larger room for non-combat interaction with NPCs, and has a lot more character customization. Considering the number of players we have that have not done a pencil-and-paper RPG before, this option may be a little less friendly in that regard.

4th edition is simpler and newer. A lot of mechanics in 4th edition mirror that of traditional modern MMORPGs, so it's relatively easy to understand and get into, at the cost of deeper roleplay mechanics and lower character customization. 4e also has more support as far as online tools to play it are concerned.

I'll leave the choice up to you. Ideally, if you're interested, please post with your previous experience in either of these two rulesets so I can come up with a list of possible DMs. I have less experience in Pathfinder than I do in 4th edition, personally.

I was beginning to think where this thread had gone to, but I'm glad to see that people are still posting amazing artwork and whatnot from the community. It never ceases to amaze. I was also wondering if anyone from here on TL had gone to the BroNYcon event. Hoping to hear some first hand accounts of how awesome it was. I saw that the next one was at the end of June and it looks like a certainty that wouldn't be able to go, so that was an automatic

Edit: Pretty interesting thought combining ponies with DnD. Never really considered that relationship. I'm not really into that scene very much since I tend to be pretty shy when put into these kinds of public games, but the friendlier version of DnD may be more suitable to get as many people involved and get a foundation going.

I have very little experience playing but based entirely on how you described them, I think I'd prefer Pathfinder. I've played twice before but I never really learned how to play because we weren't taking it very seriously at all. I understand the basics but that's about it. Also, I'd be up for it any time really.

I have zero experience playing pen and paper rpgs, what little I know comes from games like Baldur's Gate. Anyway, I would love to try it out! Can't really give an opinion on what to play, since I don't know anything.

I think Pathfinder is the better game IMO, but 4E is easier to learn for newbies.

I can dm a pathfinder game. I've been running games in 3.5/pathfinder for over 5 years now and I ran a 4.0 campaign for about a year, so it wouldn't be anything new for me. If we are going to play I suggest using http://www.rpol.net/ as it works really well for managing online games. I can run a traditional or pony themed game, depending on what you guys want. If we have "too many" people, I'm comfortable splitting you into groups and running two concurrent campaigns for that matter.

EDIT: I went ahead and made a game for us on rpol.net search "TL FIM" or GMarshal in games and request to join (include your tl username) and I'll add you to the group, we can figure out the details there, rather than bloating this thread.

I probably wouldnt be available for pathfinder depends on when you guys set up play sessions but I voted pathfinder because it's just much better than 4th ed. I like 3.5ed better anyways and pathfinder just refined that and took away a lot of the weaknesses in the ruleset. It's much easier on starting players as the first couple of levels arent as harsh on wizards and other similar classes that can really tear apart a new player who's never played DnD before. Plus 4th ed gets horribly broken as you get to higher levels as well.

Also no it wouldn't be pony related in story that would be just too hard we discussed this on irc it would just be pony fans playing pathfinder.

That's part of the advantage of rpol, Raelcun, its post by post, so you post at your leisure. Otherwise coordinating with all the timezones would be a huge pain.

I am Interested in playing DnD. I have played it once and it was good fun, though I can't say I learnt the rules to well. Timing is an issue unfortunately due to studies, I home study so I'm flexible that way but I also live on the opposite side of the planet. Thought I would let my interest be known anyway as what's the worst response I could get.

My friends and I tried playing a MLP DnD campaign, but in the end we just ended up retelling the story of certain episodes and it wasn't as much fun as we thought. Also some of my friends weren't really big fans, so that didn't help...
