Haha, yeah man, I watched the first couple episodes of Naruto and found myself banging my head against the monitor, despite knowing how epic it gets later on. As a result I never watched it. First impressions can go a long way.
MLP, similarly, is a character-driven show, so it can take several episodes worth of investment before you get any tangible returns. And even then you might not like it, just because it's not your cup of tea -- just like some people don't like Scrubs, or House, or The Walking Dead, and I don't push those shows on people any more than I do MLP. At least you gave the show a chance instead of dismissing it outright, and even if you maybe can't see why we all like it so much, at least you know we're genuine in our fandom. =)
When I got compelled to try it, I wasn't very into it after the first episode but I saw it was a two-parter so for the sake of completeness I felt like I had to watch the second part. Then after that was done I still wasn't sold but was interested in how they continue the show after that point, do they just get a new big villain to defeat or what?
After episode three... I just didn't want to stop watching. It was pretty weird as it was still just... "My Little Pony" to me and I wasn't sure why I was getting so into it. It took me like ten episodes to shake that inner dialogue of "I'm watching My Little Pony. I'm a 23 year old straight man and I'm watching My Little Pony. Oh god why is it so good".
Anyway it's not a show for everyone either way, you've given it more of a chance than most people would already. If you want to be really thorough there are still episodes to try but if Dragonshy didn't spark any interest then fair enough.

Yep! That is probably the most common story in the fandom. =)
Watched Ep 7 in the opening post, I really don't get it. Just felt like a normal girl show to me, don't really feel any reason to watch another episode.
Maybe it's just not a good episode for it, but I don't get all this talk about character development, it's not comparable even to decently bad animes, just a few stereotypical personalities which I can't really see developing at all. And that sorta sums up my problem with it, why watch this show which will obviously label me gay regardless, when I can just download a random anime instead?

Read the rest of this page; we just responded to this very thing!
It's actually kind of a weird thing for me... it's hard for me to recommend taking the time and effort watching the show from the start and sticking around for half a dozen episodes when people are clearly not feeling it at all, yet so many people have come into this show in exactly that fashion: after significant investment.
Or, in other words, it's hard to recommend to keep watching it if you aren't liking it because I'm afraid of wasting your time. In the end, it's entirely up to you, man. If you don't like it, well, at least you gave it a shot, and we appreciate everyone who don't just dismiss it because of its nature. =)
Yeah, so I don't know if you guys have heard it yet, but Not A Clever Pony had to leave the scene apparently due to some serious health issues; his farewell post made me really sad ;_;
Someone made that new remix in honor of him (I recommend reading his farewell post while listening to that). Hope he comes back someday, he was one of the absolute best brony musicians. ;_;

Thats half the fun, they might appear as stereotypical characters at first, but as you watch more episodes you learn more about the nature of each character and it is not always as you would expect, they are infact alot more naunced than you first might imagine.
The Ponies reactions to the events they encounter in the episodes can surprise you yet they still can remain true to their character, I don't think you can tell from just 1 episode but they are anything but stereotypical though they do fall under certain archetypes they borrow qualities from others and branch out to create something alot more entertaining than first impressions might lead you to believe
I don't know how the show compares to anime as i've only ever watched a few in my time and they have all been big name ones that basically everyone knows about.
However what is important is you gave the show a shot before you formed an opinion of it, and that is all that we ask of here so cheers to you
Edit: That is sad news about Notacleverpony Squarewalker, I really liked his music and I will miss it, however his health is more important and we still have all the stuff he made to enjoy

I see thrown around an awful many essays better suited to appease a high school literature teacher than to give something tangible to hold onto. The fact of the matter is that none of that fancy analysis is going to help anyone actually enjoy the show any more than they already do. All walking through something looking for "proof" has ever done for anyone is reinforce whatever view they already held.
Love an anime and you might give it first place in the 23rd "Your Top 5 Shows" thread. What we know is that we're now having the time of our lives hanging onto a ride of ups and downs (but mostly ups) with something we never imagined taking so much as a second look at. It's really up to you to see just how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Rarity's probably the best example of this, just because of how thoroughly she spits on her archetype.
They're all very much three dimensional characters, it's just that it takes time to get to know them.

Now, I've watched a fair bit of anime, all kinds from clannad (;_;) to full metal panic, to the world god only knows, to Code Geas.
None of it brings me the sheer amount of pure joy MPL:FIM does, some have come close, and some have managed to stir emotions as strong as MLP does, but for sheer amount of happiness, joy and undiluted innocence, without compromise., not a single anime has managed to equal FIM. Yes, there have been intense, emotion stirring anime that have touched me, like clannad afterstory, but generally the vast majority of "character driven" anime feel bland and uninteresting when compared to this show about magical ponies. Does FIM have childish elements? Yes, plenty, but despite this it manages to be interesting and involving. For just general feelgood there is very little that rivals this show (and yes, I've watched things like KON and other "Moe" anime), this show has pull that is simply not apparent at first glance.
Then there is the extremely strong and active community that exists around MLP, that no anime enjoys, sure there is some discussion, but not the level of active hype, and off the wall bouncing excitement you see from the MLP community. How many Puella Magica fanfics have been written? How much fan art? Not that much, comparatively, and yet it was an extremely popular anime at the time of its showing. This community has a passion that I've only seen twice before, and that is not present in the majority of the communities that have sprouted up around different anime.
Finally, why do you care if a show "labels you as gay"? You know your sexuality, and the opinions of others are but ashes in the wind. Do what makes you happy, those who label you without knowing you are not insulting you, but themselves. I have been called, many, many things for standing up for things I care about, and for refusing to lie about who I am, does that at all change who I am? Does it make me a worse person in the eyes of the universe? No. It does not, because at the end, there is only a few people who's opinion should have any weight, and those people are those who refuse to judge at a glance.
All that said, if the show is not for you, its not for you, although judging it off of one episode does the show a disservice in my opinion. Thanks for trying at least, and remember, labels are what insecure people use to feel better about themselves.
The other day on IRC we were discussing how old the mane6 are. Most of us thought they were in their twenties or so, but some disagreed, saying they were younger. Also, someone quoted Lauren Faust as saying that mentally, the mane6 were about 15 years old or so.
So that got me thinking, maybe fanfiction has distorted our perception of how old these characters really are in the show.
And thus, I present the following poll:
Poll: What is the average age of the mane six?
Closer to 18 (I don't read fanfiction) (17)

I dont think she ever mentioned an actual age. It was something along the lines of "Young Adult", and "old enough to have a job and not care about things like school, yet still young".
It certainly isn't teenager age, yet it's not 25+. I believe it's 18~22 human age(as we have no info regarding pony age).
I dunno what to vote on that poll, I'd like to vote smack dab in the middle, 20 sounds about right :p
voted for closer to 22 (I read fanfictions)
It's not something you can really get correct though but the range 18-22 seems about perfect for young ponies when some have their own homes and business and studies. all I know for sure is that 15 sounds far too young.
