I don't understand the show changes sometimes. As mentioned above, they are probably cutting Oldtown. It's not a satisfactory answer, but given the expense of the show I'm guessing they're trying to keep the number of filming locations/sets down, and Oldtown would be another spot to film for a minor part of a fringe plotline.

Also, if they do the "Mance's baby" bit, they need Gilly back eventually.

I mean, nothing's happened there yet, but that was one of the main reasons of Sam leaving, to become a Maester, and there's a lot pointing to the group he meets being important in the next book for reasons of magic and dragons. Also, if they do the "Mance's baby" bit, they need Gilly back eventually. Exactly. They need the baby. Not sure what they're doing.

You can cut Oldtown as a filming location without cutting it as a part of the plot, which is what I was trying to suggest.

Going forward they could easily get her back into the story given her close proximity, but if they wanted to cut out the whole Mance's baby thing I don't think much would be lost (they have yet to introduce Dalla or Val, if they ever intend to). Sam could simply be sent to Oldtown to train as a maester by himself.

I would imagine this is the reason why we have yet to see Lady Stoneheart, Coldhands or the Greyjoys. They are two interesting characters, and if they are saved for later it is fine with me, so long as they stick to the actual story.

It has the added bonus of then being able to pick apart every little change. It is harder right now because in the first three episodes of s4 there has been stuff from as early as 30% of the way through SoS and as late as 80%. It should narrow down towards content from late in SoS. Next season they get seriously into book 4 and 5 and I imagine it'll become impossible. Maybe a ball of beasts reading order would make it reasonable. A lot hangs on what they do with the Dorne and Iron Islands storylines. I've lost my pre-show impression of Melisandre, Jorah, Sam, Sansa, and Varys more recently. Probably a couple more who do not come to mind as strongly. Tywin was the first one to creep in, but that I didn't mind losing to Charles Dance. Dance is a little silly with the burnside thing going on though. That part just can't be overwritten.

+ Show Spoiler + in that chapter, He killed Raff the Sweetling in this chapter by asking him if he can walk and stabbing him in the throat, exactly the same way lommy died. In the first episode of season 4, They killed polliver this way. I would have preferred the original tarvern scene where arya stabs him in the back asking, 'is there gold in the village? where is beric dondarrion'. My point is, they shouldn't mix things up like this.

And to be honest, I don't think the show runners knew how GRRM was gonna set it up in book 6 when they were filming season 2.

If you read right ahead of the show, all you will be able to focus on is every little change from the books, and it will hinder your ability to enjoy the show. I enjoy the show most when I'm just watching the show for what it is and not worrying about every little tiny detail that is different.
