Another thing I thought of was instead of leaving the question "is his "reality" also false" by spinning the top at the end, he could have built the notion of false reality strongly in cobb to the point where the ending is simply him picking up a gun and shooting himself. Same ambiguity but i'd have found it more compelling although the idea of the protagonist potentially ending their life as the final scene of a film isn't one that might be appealing. To justify such an end alot of elements would have had to have been altered slightly although I found the ending a little dissatisfying Overall though it was outstanding and compelling, kept me focused throughout and even though it was long I couldn't notice as it was so involving.
+ Show Spoiler +I really think people are overthinking the ending... There was no ambiguity for me, the top began to wobble right before cutting to end. I thought it was just a momentary red herring, to make audience have double take.

+ Show Spoiler +About the top; would using someone elses totem tell you anything? In an earlier scene he clearly spins the top and decides not to kill himself.
Or maybe he just ended on a different level than he started.

I enjoyed the movie. Although the twists were lacking, and dull. Maybe it's just because I'm so used to movies trying to shock me with a "surprise" twist lol.

I loved the movie. If anything I wanted it longer ^^ Shit was a bit thin in some spots, but obviously they don't wanna make a 5hr movie. 5/5 imo.

+ Show Spoiler + A totem is an item which, if kept a secret, only the owner knows the proper weight, size, feel, and physics of. Using another person's totem tells you nothing about your current state because you have no recollection/prior knowledge of how that item reacts and feels. For all you know, it's a piece of your (or somebody else's) subconscious.
The top was Leo's totem because he acquired it after his wife died. He knew that in "dream worlds" the top keeps spinning.

omg <3 im so excited to watch it now. from reading the responces in this thread i should go see it?

just watched the movie, 10/10, absolutely fantastic.
yeah, a little thin at parts, could be better explained - I definitely wanted more - but then again, i agree with Motiva, nobody wants to stay in a theater for 5hrs. At least not normal ppl.

+ Show Spoiler +He spun the top out of habit, but he knew he had returned to reality when he saw his kids' faces. Seeing his kids' faces wasn't in his memory. He didn't need to see Mal's top stop spinning to make sure.

well said, logically sound, this does clear up some things for me.

One of the best movies I have seen thus far.
It had a great blend of action, drama, thrill, and mindfuckery. The idea of a totem is so fantastically brilliant.
Maybe we should make a new thread or maybe just a subset of this thread asking "what would your totem be?" It has to be something somehow significant to you, have some sort of memorable quality about it (it could just be the weight of the object, or something specific about its make) and it has to be small enough to be easily carried.
I kinda want some time to think of what is significant enough to me to warrant being that unique.

Excellent movie, definitely recommend it. It is the love child of Ocean's 11 and The Matrix.

I love this quote lol.
+ Show Spoiler +Cobb: There's one thing you should know about me. I specialize in a very specific type of security, subconscious security.
Fischer: You're talking about Dreams?

+ Show Spoiler +But presumably, none of the interactions we saw him have with Mal actually happened in reality either, and he was able to visualize those. What's stopping his childrens' faces from being projections (à la Mal) and him from being in a dream stage during the final scene?

The buildup made it seem like more time had passed than was noticeable on the children.
Maybe he somehow knew he failed with Saito and just set himself up into a pleasant dreamworld. I.E. he inceptioned himself.
P.S. Why was his father (in law?) in LA instead of Paris?

In my opinion Cobb setup his own dreamworld, things were a little too fishy. I like how this movie leaves you with an ending that is up for interpretation, much like Shutter Island.

Holy shit what a great movie.
One thing about the ending: + Show Spoiler +Something is bothering me at the end and is making me doubt that it's reality. The children are the same age and wear the same clothes they were wearing in his dreams...
And about the children faces being the proof he's in reality: When he was in the 4th layer with his wife she called the children so he could see their faces but he chose not to look, does that mean that he could've seen the faces in a dream? If so then he could be dreaming at the end

Looks pretty sick in my opinion. It's got a lot going for it at the moment.
Going to see it tomorrow xD
