There were definitely some "need more time to think" moments, at least for me. But just given Nolan's impeccable movie-making credentials, the viewer is able to suspend disbelief and trust that it will all make perfect sense given time and subsequent viewings. Also, + Show Spoiler + Did the 3rd level snow world remind anyone of the Surface levels in Goldeneye for N64?

I feel like he should've used something other than a top if he wanted to make it ambiguous for the ending, just because when a top starts to wobble, it's gonna fall, and it's really obvious.

I think he should have cut it off about .25 seconds earlier, so you see it stutter a bit, but not about to fall. Would have been more ambiguous imo. Like I said earlier though, fantastic movie. The first hour or so was pretty good, not like mind blowing, but after the actual plot starts....oh god it's incredible. This is one of the only movies I've ever stopped midway through, looked at my friend, and said "Oh my god this movie is sick". I mean it wasn't even over yet.

No one is suppose to touch your totem, but he's using the one from a wife who died in a questionable dream state. The only reason to take the apparent top level of the movie at face value is because his wife isn't there, and she's in all his other dreams. I'll have to watch the movie again, but didn't the top fall when Saito spun it at the beginning? (or did he even spin it, lol) Ariadne is the lady that helped Theseus overcome the minotaur of the labyrinth. P.S. Did anyone else hear the wife's name as maul, and think of gretchen mol from the thirteeth floor?

It doesn't matter whether the totem falls or stays up through the entire movie if he is the person who is dreaming. He knows how the totem works and can subconsiously determine whether it stands or falls

+ Show Spoiler + I LOVE the direction of the plot and the ambiguous ending. I LOVE how they portrayed the internal struggles of Leo using this construct, the torment and baggage that everyone faces.

At one point I was getting confused on which places were real and which were dreams.

In an earlier scene he clearly spins the top and decides not to kill himself. Or maybe he just ended on a different level than he started. + Show Spoiler + A totem is an item which, if kept a secret, only the owner knows the proper weight, size, feel, and physics of. Using another person's totem tells you nothing about your current state because you have no recollection/prior knowledge of how that item reacts and feels. For all you know, it's a piece of your (or somebody else's) subconscious. The top was Leo's totem because he acquired it after his wife died. He knew that in "dream worlds" the top keeps spinning. But you just contradicted yourself. If it was his wife's totem, then who is to say that it will behave the same with him as it did with moll? You can't know for sure.

The African guy in the movie in Mombasa said " they come here to wake up from their reality. Their dreams have become THEIR reality, and who are you to say otherwise". I think Christopher Nolan was suggesting that.

So if your totem is supposed to be something so unique that nobody else knows exactly the properties of the object, your way of knowing you are in a dream is that the totem isn't quite the same as you remember it because someone else designed it? Or is it that you have control of the object when you are dreaming and thus can make it have the wrong properties? Also, I believe in the very last fraction of a second, you can see that the top tumbles over and you can hear a slight "click." I think the kids are in the same clothes and position as they were previously not because the whole thing was a dream, but to give you a sense of completion. Like he didn't get to see his children's faces before, but now that he is in the same exact situation, he is able to do what he always wanted to.

I also think that the top was simply a publicity stunt. Obviously this odd ending is going to create some confusion and questions among the audience. More questions = more discussions = more popularity = more $$$. Also, think about how the movie would've been if there was no top in play. It would've been like ever other movie with a happy ending. It probably would've been a downer after all that crazy dream hopping.

+ Show Spoiler + As for the ending, I agree with a few of the previous posters. I think that it was going to fall since it started to falter. But I also like the idea that it the top wouldn't have stopped spinning and that he was in a dream but it faltered because he accepted this dream as his reality. I personally believe that its a dream. It seemed more of a dream like state of mind to me since he completely ignored everyone he just spend hours with and walked past them to his father without acknowledging them. Also, if he ever does realize that it is still in fact a dream. He can set up a kick that will awaken himself from the dream no?
