Several months prior to TI2, he was rarely picked, because the hero pool was much different and the teams consisted mostly of NA and EU teams, as China was still busy playing DotA 1. However a bit before TI2, he became much more popular. The reasoning for this is partly why people liked AM so much at the first International. He's just so hard to kill or gank that people won't even bother. That means you are either guaranteed farm or just can get out of ganks. He has waveform, morph strength and replicate. All three help you get out of bad situations. The only thing that stops him from morphing strength is silences, so you can chain stun him all you want, but you have to have enough burst to overcome the HP gain. He is very strong in the lane with huge magic damage from his waveform and can increase his auto attack damage for extra last hitting power if he isn't in trouble of being bursted down. He can build for the midgame by going for an Ethereal Blade. This item is pretty much made for Morphling, because he can gain extra agility, which benefits both his Eblade and Adaptive Strike. This is called the shotgun Morphling build. He can one-shot squishies and get out with replicate, so some heroes can never be safe from the shotgun. He can also build for one of the strongest right-click late games or even transition into it from the Ethereal Blade by buying Manta, Butterfly, or Skadi. BKB is sometimes necessary. Since he is a stats-based carry, favoring items like Butterfly over items like Daedalus, Manta illusions are very effective, since their damage is based on stats. Sometimes you see him building strength items like Heart or Satanic or all-around stat items like Skadi, since he can just morph that strength into agility for damage, unlike other agi carries who will only get the benefits of the strength. He can also replicate the enemy carry in a fight and use it as an extra half of a carry, or use it to become an amazing split-pusher with the ability to be in two lanes at once, pressuring the enemy into going back to base to defend instead of being on offensive. He doesn't have some kind of scaling auto attack effect like crit or %damage increase, but he can just get extra raw damage by converting stats to agility. | ||
