Liquid does have to catch up. They won that fight because they overcomitted. It would have been an Aegis for a CM and a bear if Fnatic backed off earlier, and that was at their own tier 3.
They don't have such a poor lategame, but they are not ahead right now.

Talking about advantages if both teams don't do anything is kinda silly, in that case the team with the superior lategame never has to do anything. TL doesn't have to catch up if Fnatic doesn't do shit, but that's not up to them. They have to outplay Fnatic right now to catch up.
Hanni's item choices definatelly help TL though, Fnatic could be more ahead.

Yes, that's entirely correct. The team with the superior lategame never has to do anything. It's the other team that has to make things happen, and then get enough of an advantage that the lategame team has to be seriously worried about the game simply ending. Liquid has only ever been in that position when Fnatic attacks their T3s. Outside of that, the only thing they need to do is farm.
