Hi,

I am really struggling to get better at dota.

I am at around 1.5k MMR and my friend is at 3K MMR.

Although we are good friends, he always teases me for my low MMR.

I cannot take this at all and want to improve myself. I have already watched any and all videos to improve including youtube, gameleap, strategy guides, etc.

I play around 1-2 games daily.

Should I hire a coach ? or is there anything else I can do to improve ?

Many thanks.

Did you watch the purge coaches day9 series?

Other than that try to be more critical of what you should be doing in a game. Watch a game yourself. Train last hits and stuff. Play only 3 heroes (if you want to climb and only climb) .

Idk play lots of pubs and play to improve(take note of areas you could improve or whatever). Prolly play alot more will work for you(it's not like you are trying to be better than some 7k player)

just try to improve aspects of your play over multiple games. A lot of mechanical aspects like lasthitting and mapawareness get better if you consciously train them one by one.

Try to watch the before you play your games. And improve slowly. The lessons were supposed to be like this i guess. What i find that this one differentiates from most guides is that this talks in a more general way while still focusing some key plays and movements.

My MMR journey was roughly 2.1k -> 1.8k -> 3.1k, with some detours along the way.

Playing at super low MMR is like playing a different game. People aren't wrong when they are telling you to improve your lasthitting/micro/other things, but I think that one of the biggest things is to not get discouraged when you lose, even in close games. It's easier said than done, but I thought of it like this:

"Did I make mistakes in this game?" (Always yes)
"If yes, I can't be mad that we lost, because I could have done x,y,z things better"

I put focus on improving personally, and tried to always look for things that I could improve. When people say that you learn more from losses vs. wins, that's what they mean. I know lots of close games where I could have learned important lessons but instead I was like "eh, we won, whatever."

Also, I can't emphasize this enough, don't be an asshole. Seriously. I enjoy using the mic and generally shotcalling big things, but nothing demotivates your team more than some guy whinging on the mic about every little mistake. So many people would be higher MMR if they realized this. There are games where you are just bound to lose, just like there are games where even if you don't do anything, you will win.

Keep at it, focus on a skill or two at a time, play more straight forward champs (not just for you, but for your teammates as well, lots of people don't understand all of the champs,) and try your best to not get discouraged and stay positive.

Odds are your friend plays more games than you. If you wanna get better at anything, you have to put the time in. Try 3 or 4 if possible

I would suggest the classical mmr climbing trick. You climb since you also improve while doing it due to limiting the unknown factors allowing more focus on the basics.

Pick heroes with good win rate, just go to dotabuff and pick 3 from the ones with best win rate. Watch a high mmr game of the hero, either pick from the guides at dotabuff and load up in game or pick from the ones with high mmr in the current games on watch. Then play the game using the Torte de Lini guides as a starting point. Only when you have a solid reason should you deviate from them, showing you have reached the stage where you can analyse the game.

I also highly recommend the Day9 series. Other good stuff:

Picking 3-4 heroes and spam those is obviously a good bit of advice.
However, I would go one step further and initially pick a role to narrow it down even more.

Do you want to play mid/support/offlane etc.?
Decide on a role, then pick 3 heroes and spam those to get better at.
Helped me quite a bit back when I started. I played only support for a good 6-8 months (imo best to learn the basics and flow of the game), then went to spam offlaners, then carries and now I'm grinding mid a bit.

One important thing though: Don't be a dick. If you want to play mid, but someone grabs it, don't tilt and throw the game by picking techies or a second mid or something

If you want to play everything or switch it up, I'd say pick 2-3 heroes per role and stick to those.

1) watch a high mmr player from his perspective ingame, on the hero that you play (Watch tab in dota)
2) get someone to watch one of your replays with you

Spam one hero every game (doesn't matter if you go shadow fiend offlane :D) (But you shouldn't start with shadow fiend)
Pick a pro-player you like who plays it a lot
Keep playing, watching his replays at x25 speed to see what he does in last hits, buys, changes builds every game, how he moves in fights etc. just watch his every game on the hero
Until you get really good
Then add another hero

I remember dota1 when Xboct was my go-to Spectre player
I played like 50 spectre games downloaded and watched loads of his replays

If you want to rise, do not click the random button ever EVER, not even once. Even if you are forced to pick first just straight up choose the hero dont click the button. dont get tilted into clicking the button.

I tried to help my friend by watching him play and being a coach and what not, but im pretty sure my eyes almost bled to death watching that game, idk how i ever played when i was that low, you get people who auto attack creeps or sit on the rune spot for 1 minutes to wait for the next rune to come. and it seems that 5 hard carries is the way to go everygame.

If you have a good friend that's much better than you, play with them and ask them for their feedback. It sounds obvious but it will help you advance quickly. And don't argue with them--you might be right about a few things, but they'll be right about far more.

Other than that focus on farming well, avoiding bad fights while taking good ones, and communicating well so your team makes good decisions.

Just make sure you play to improve. If you're actively practicing skills you will advance much faster. Learn as much of the basics as you can like last hitting, heros, map awareness, and items. Then pick a role and hero and try to emulate the pros.

Ok, so I'm stuck at 2000-2200mmr, been like that for over a year now. I'm currently trying to improve my mechanics like lasthitting, all that jazz. My question however is, should I play meta high-winrate heroes, or the heroes I feel comfortable playing, for example I'm a decent OD player (for my skill bracket) and I really like playing him, same for Disruptor or Bristleback, but none of those are exactly pubstompers. Any advice?

Focus on one role brah. Choose 3~4 heroes like TB, sven, spectre, jugg and spam them. Just pick each of them in the draft that suits your team the most.

Even if you want to go with fun heroes, go on a specific role.

Like Pontual said.
Pick a role - then pick 4-5 heroes for that role to spam.

Possibly check here which of your hero pool would be best for a particular game:
http://dotapicker.com/counterpick

Also watch FP games of high MMR players.

if the OP still visits, dude. you will beat your friend if you stop worrying about beating him, and instead worry about beating people who are better than him. you'll come to the quick realization that a lot of what you're doing is very wrong and you need to shape your entire outlook of the game from scratch.
if you watch your friend's games, you'll notice him making many mistakes also, that you'll want to point out to him.
but don't. there's actually no reason to tease him back, your goal should be to improve so you may enjoy the game better and the quality of time you spend on the game is better as you gain skill.
it isn't required of you to be snarky or know it all.

in a lot of your games you will be picking heroes that could be very good against what you're up against in lane, but end up doing much worse than you could be. in order to start a learning routine where you stop depending on the coinflip of teammates you get (who may or may not carry you),
set a bar for yourself for how well you need to do [in lane] in order to consider it a success.

the most basic thing i see laners doing is not right clicking heroes when having more regen or a hero is in walking distance of helping. the earlier you can establish your rightful dominance in the lane, the better your lane will be later on.
if you are a juggernaut laning against a pudge solo, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to right click him and win the trade. the pudge will quickly realize that if he sits in the lane rotting, he'll get spun on and lose.
then whenever you walk towards the pudge, he will always back away, further and further to the point that he can no longer come back to lane, guaranteed.

if you set that goal for yourself, suddenly, you will seldom lose lanes against heroes that you shouldn't be losing against, or when you meet better opponents/matchups you can set new goals and figure out what needs to happen for you to achieve that very same success.

you can use that concept for anything in the game, including how your teammates are playing.

here is an insightful post by chu8 (hots) about climbing MMR.
