If you pick a support hero and the carry you're supposed to be supporting has really bad mechanics or is playing poorly despite your feedback, what should you do?
I've had two games today where I played a support (Tide) on safe lane with a carry and was giving my carry solo XP, warding, creep pulling; you know, typical support stuff. In both games my carry auto attacked creeps despite me explaining why that was bad, pushed out and got harassed out of lane very quickly (or dies to a pinged gank).
At these points, I feel very frustrated because I feel like I wasted my pick and my starting gold. I can't really leave the player alone and roam or go to the hard lane because he's going to most likely feed, but I feel like by staying there I"m not doing anythign for the team either.
Is there anything you can do in these situations, or should you just not play support in low level games?

The best advice I can give you in regards to playing pubs is to queue with at least 1 person you know. Playing support is very important, and it becomes much more enjoyable when your lanemate isn't retarded.

The one thing about support is that you should recognize is not to get attached to one lane. Lanes aren't static. If the guy you're laning with sucks at controlling the lane, then you should start looking around the map for ganks. You're not obligated to stick with that retarded carry, even though he may get mad at you for leaving him. Scope out your other lanes and see who looks like they know what they're doing. Then look for opportunities to help those people get kills.
Even if he's going to feed when you're gone, it may still be good to find those ganks. He's probably going to be useless regardless of whether or not he dies, so getting someone else who knows what they're doing fed takes priority.
If you have 4 people who are totally incompetent, then you're fucked regardless. But if one of the 4 players on your team is good, get that guy fed, and help him to carry the game.

Basically if you know your lane is going to lose regardless of your presence, tell your carry to 'try not to die' while you roam and try to help win the other two lanes.

always ALWAYS ask your carry if you can leave the lane or not. even my page 1 stackers supports dont do this and we end up getting shitcanned. you cannot ditch a pl against am and sd, it does not work.

Don't play as a pure support in low level games (that doesn't mean don't pick support characters). The carry won't have map awareness enough to use the wards anyway, place them if they help, but don't overdo it. If the carry dies a lot, solo-xp isn't going to help.
If you are lower on the food chain than your lane partner, still go for last hits, but time it late. If your carry is getting most of them, then you know you can just deny and pull. If your carry is missing them ( or auto-attacking ) just outfarm them. Regardless, you'll still want to get some farm.
One of the pleasure of low-level games is that everyone is a carry or semi-carry. As Tide you can do things like go double heart and the enemy team won't know not to focus you. Regardless, enjoy the game for what it is. You don't try to run the triangle offense when playing a pick-up basketball game where someone on your team is in a wheelchair.

Not game related but when you're low priority do you just have to wait longer for a game? Or are you placed in a new pool?

So I'm watching Mouz vs Nth and Black just built both PMS and VG.. I was under the impression that the damage blocks don't stack, meaning that only the one with the higher priority will provide the block, is that not correct?

The highest block value is taken in the dota 2 engine. Building both is indeed quite silly though.

Well, I guess that means you get a guaranteed 20 damage block with an occasional 40 damage one? Would kind of make sense on certain heroes then.. not on FV tho, that's for sure. Thanks.

Assuming you're only worried about hero hits. PMS doesn't guarantee block from non hero attacks.

Is there any specific reason why illusions cannot attack Roshan? Were they able to do that before or was it always like this?
|
Ursa is the main reason. Then he was nerfed so illusions no longer procced his orb. After that it just happened to be seen as a good idea. Would make rosh too easy for some heroes.

It's still possible to have illusions tank rosh, I thought.

it is. can someone tell me how to do it without losing the illus? do i issue a move command or something?

@above: I actually don't know what it's like with autoattack on. My hold button turns autoattack off at the same time so that makes it easy for me.

I think it's either moving the illusion close, having autoattack off and hitting hold position or issuing the move command onto Roshan. I don't do it that often though.
I think having PL illusion tank might actually be a mistake since proccing another illusion will result in him smashing (he needs 3 heroes by him to do it, I think 3 illusions would count).

Before I go buy this game and go own some noobs, I have a very specific hotkey setup for Dota1
Items: 7/8/4/5/1/2 >>> Alt + Q/W/A/S/Z/X Control Groups: Hero > 1, summons > 2, Hero+summons > 3
Is it possible for me to replicate this EXACT setup? I play melee warcraft and dota1 so this is really important for me if i decide to play heroes such as Chen. It's fused into my muscle memory.

Yes, you can customize all the hotkeys. You don't even have to mess with AHK or edit a text file
