You pretty much have to get lifesteal lategame anyway, and Skadi stacks with it, while Deso doesn't. Strictly speaking, most of what Skadi gives comes at a better price point on S&Y (at lategame attack speed, the S&Y maim comes up often enough anyway, and doesn't interfere with orbs regardless and likewise going through magic immunity), since Drow pretty much doesn't need mana, and most of the cost difference between the two items comes from the massive amount of mana Skadi provides as well. However, there are a couple considerations that favor Skadi in a really late-game situation: - The Yasha-based MS/AS boost doesn't stack between Manta and S&Y. Since this is one of the major selling points of S&Y in the first place, and Manta Drow no longer blows donkey nuts thanks to Drow Illusions finally having Marksmanship again, in a lategame scenario with Manta, S&Y is losing a lot of it's value. - Although S&Y is technically more cost-efficient, it's not really more slot-efficient, and when you're factoring in that it doesn't stack with Manta for the Yasha MS/AS, it's probably significantly less so. Lategame this matters somewhat more than the cost-efficiency difference.

A lot of people like Manta / SnY for the movement speed + extra agility but it's flexible. + Skadi goes through bkb (frost arrows does not) + it's a really good debuff. The attack speed slow is a reverse Beastmaster buff. + Frost arrows doesn't stack with lifesteal. Skadi however does and lifesteal is so important on Drow Skadi is good on every hero.

On various agi melee carries, ex. Antimage, Slark, Juggernaut, when do you prioritize poor-man's shield over brown boots and vice versa?

If you take a lot of harassment in lane, upgrade it to PMS. Otherwise go brown boots. PMS is even good if you don't take harassment in lane but plan on fighting somewhat early. Good for heroes like Slark, Jugger etc. Not so much AM. You can buy both full PMS and Treads/Phase in the Outpost. Just do whatever fits bets for the game.

If you ask me its kinda overused, especially in pubs (holy shit every other SF is going Eul/Blink/Mek and shit and doing zero damage). But there are some nice benefits. - Just basic catch up and TP interrupts. You can just walk away from an SF without Eul. - He farms a lot with mana so makes good use of the regen. - Makes for good requiem setups. These should be the basic reasons. But dont forget that it does nerf your damage significantly, especially if coupled with other defensive/utility items. And if the game goes long or if you're the hard carry on your team it might not always be the best idea.

It's irrelevant in other cases, because non-phasing 18-line SF ults still don't work regardless.

If you don't have phasing, coming down inside someone's model shoves you out of the way when you land. In DotA 1, there's about an 84-range leeway for SF ult where you can still get an 18-line ulti, but as someone in that thread mentions, it's still impossible to do that, even though phasing ults with Phase Boots or Lothar's work correctly now. Depending on how DotA 2 handles moving non-phased units in the same position getting moved, it might be possible to get an 18-line ult with Eul's if they come down perfectly on the right frame, but the level of precision required to do that reliably is utterly impractical and isn't relevant enough to justify buying the item.

if they try to move at all it's really hard to do max damage unless they try to walk around you

I mean if I stand to the left of a puck or shaker who orbs/fissures straight to the right I still get hit due to how big the animations are. Shouldnt it be the same for requiem? It's supposed to be, but again, the starting AoE of the Requiem lines isn't defined right. Again, they should be wide enough that there's about 84 units of wiggle room for someone to get hit by all 18 lines, but this isn't the case (most heroes have a collision size of 24, so the minimum center-to-center distance of 2 heroes is normally 48--plenty of room to get an 18-lines Requiem if it things worked like in DotA 1). As far as I'm aware, you still need phasing to reliably get all 18 lines.
