With blitz they only got second at manila;) I'd say placing second at a valve event is a bigger achievement than winning one premier lan event though, isn't it?

It also depends how you look at it. At epicenter they were dominant from the start, and managed to finish the job. At manila they had a bad start, but were able to come back, and got better every match. I prefer the 1st place finish though, all the top teams were there too. But Blitz is great, would love to have him back ![]()

They're both valuable in different ways. In terms of money and maybe prestige a Valve event is obviously more valuable than a third party one. But personally I think that actually winning a premier event with as many decent teams as EPICENTER had at the time is a very big achievement for a team. That's potentially maybe more valuable to them for their confidence, their belief in themselves and their development as a team. When you're in a big team with a decent amount of potential and expect a good placement in every tournament but you haven't won yet, at some point you kinda need to prove to yourself that you do have it. That you have what it takes to win. Always falling short can lead to severe morale issues that are very hard to fix and can create friction in a team you don't think would need to worry about it. I've been on teams in a different sport where despite objectively being a great team we felt awful because we failed to close things out too often when it mattered which eventually led to significant changes. Not saying this is necessarily relevant for Liquid under Blitz or Heen, but sometimes it is more important that a coach makes you win or that a team wins instead of being runner-up in a bigger and more important competition.

I remember times, when I could see all the teams playing tournaments each weekend. Now it is just boring, I cant even remember when I saw liquid playing the last time. All is centered around the majors and thats pretty much it. As a dota fan its horrible.

Now you place good in one premium tournament and you are good for months. Even qualifying for a big tournament is enough to earn you at least $5k / player. Now they choose only the tournaments with biggest prize pools / game played. And that's why we don't we see much games played. That's normal for the players to do, but very bad for us as a fans.

Your reasoning is sound, but there simply haven't been any tournaments for them lately. They lost out on qualifying for most of the recent ones and the new qualifiers haven't started yet because of the holidays. Since the major I think the only new qualifier has been starladder which is just starting and liquid is participating in.

They need all the practice they can get. And playing official games against other pro teams is the best practice. There are just no tournaments around right now, as giftdgecko said. Especially since playing (and winning) these smaller tournaments kinda kicked of their amazing start into 2016.
