We want to do something to remember these last 10 (technically nine) years. Thing is, we don't want to do it the way we've traditionally done it. We don't want to sit down with 3-4 writers and tell you what the best things that's happened in Dota was. Because there's a very real possibility that your opinion is as valid, or better, than ours. So we're kind of flipping the script on you guys here.
What does that mean?
For the next seven days, we will post a poll a day on our twitter account, asking for your opinion about the most memorable Dota 2 moment in a certain category. Simply vote for your favorite in that poll.
That doesn't mean we'll be lazy though. Shortly before posting each poll, we're going to publish a short-ish piece recapping the options and why they mattered, as we don't expect everyone to know everything that happened in the last 10 years.
Day 1: Call of the decade
WINNER:
"CEEEEEEEEEEB"
"CEEEEEEEEEEB"
We can't let the old guard get all the glory here. And nor should they. Cap, Blitz, Lyrical, Trent, Fogged, and GrandGrant have all had their share of brilliant caster moments. Having named all those great casters we still feel like ODPixel's "CEEEEEEEB" has that little extra that propels a great call to one for the ages.
Yes, it's the fact that entire arenas will now chant "CEEEEEEEB" but it's not JUST that. ODPixel is known as the "rap god" for a reason. While the "CEEEEEEEB" call may be what people remember, do yourself a favor and listen to the entire clip below. It's incredible. And thus, a hot contender for "Call of the decade".
+ Show Spoiler [The other nominees] +
1. The Play
Maybe the most famous play in Dota 2 history came in the game's infancy. During TI2 Naga - Dark Seer was what Morphling - Earth Shaker was during TI8. Cancer. Seen as unbeatable. Still, NaVi let iG have that combo and in an amazing symphony of skills, countered it in legendary fashion.
But "The Play" really wouldn't have been as huge if it wasn't for the casting of LD and Lumi. The hype they brought to that moment elevated NaVi's performance from awesome to legendary. A call so famous, some fans see it as a rite of passage to memorize the entire thing.
2. "It’s a disastaaah"
Time to move off LD and Lumi's many, many memorable moments casting together and when you're talking about legendary caster calls, you can't not include TobiWan. He's one of the most passionate casters Dota has ever seen and that passion has us epic "BLACK HOOOOOOOLE"s as well as hysterical laughter. However, there's something special about this one.
We can't really put our finger on it but there's something in that falsetto he hits that just tickles us in the right way. "It's a disAAAStah". It's simultaneously hilarious and just the perfect reaction for that moment.
4. "No one has ever done that, in the history of Dota!"
More TobiWan. More falsetto. What more can you ask?
The thing about Tobi's casting is that it's very polished but without ever feeling over polished. You can tell that Tobi is in the moment. In this clip maybe more than ever before. As Bulldog dies to Rosh he starts light-heartedly joking around but when he (finally) realizes what's going on it's like a switch flips in his head. You can hear it in his voice. And then the absolute astonishment at what No Tidehunter just did. It's hard not to get pulled in. And it doesn't matter that this wasn't the first time someone performed that strat in Dota. This call is legendary. And so is TobiWan.
