My general impression is that it isn't a lot of exposure for the sponsors, since a lot of people don't follow the qualifiers and just wait for the finals.
And this conflict is not new or anything. In traditional sports there were and still are conflicts between the people who own the venues/promote the events and the players. The same thing happens in music between event runners and the bands playing. Its a push and pull between the two.
I think 20 qualifiers games and being forced to go through EG and Secret is a little much. The events could cut that down and invite a few teams.

this guy on reddit put it best:
Organisers should realize that it is not amount or quality of matches that sell. It is cosmetics.

The amount of games probably has something to do with ad revenue on streams as well.
Who knows hard to say when you aren't behind the scene.

There also was a "scandal" about it back in SC2 and people basically went all ESPORTS. how much does this happen in the more mainstream sports?

Prize pool splitting is pretty much prohibited traditional sports with any money behind them. Players are even prohibited from betting on the sport they play in, even if they are not betting on games they are playing in. The trust of the audience that the players are always playing to win is super important.
Anyone remember when those two Superior Moba teams decided to split the pool and went ARAM during one of the matches at MLG? And MLG denied them the prize money for violating the rules. Good times.

It probably doesn't happen that much in mainstream sports because salaries and sponsorship deals far outweight price pools. If it does, people won't advertise it publically, so it's hard to say exactly. But I'm sure there's a fair amount of it going on in competitions where steady income hasn't outpaced tournament earnings. It being illegal won't stop many people, especially since it's a MAD deal.

WOW SUCH TEAM PLAYER!

Its weird how just a little involvement with traditional sports makes you a much better captain than like 99% of professional dota players. Its almost like being a pubstar is the exact opposite of being a team player.

it's even allowed by most organizations, here is an excerpt about it from Pokerstars:
If all remaining players in a tournament agree to split the prize money according to a formula of their choosing, PokerStars will accept this agreement, and alter the originally published tourney payouts to reflect the numbers agreed to in the deal.

But how are we supposed to be considered an ESPORT if we are comparing ourselves to poker something that is definitely NOT a sport checkmate just like chess HAHA which also ISNT a sport TOUCHDOWN

while that might be the case, the fact that anyone is even remotely okay with it, is not a competitor. fuck that shit.
