ESPORTS!!111 People with an unfounded, dumb attitude like yours are the reason why players in the video game scene just do it without ever publicising any details. Splitting prices has a lot of upsides, such as reducing risk, making it easier to calculate your income/ balance expenses thus enhancing one's ability to make a living off of playing the gamez, and ironing out quality payout structures (hi volvo).

what's the point of even playing for first then other than notoriety lol that said I can see it working out if the original proportions were something like 1st 80% 2nd 10% 3rd 5% etc and they wanted to change it to something less top heavy

And it only has the flaw of creating the nagging doubt if the players are playing as hard as they can to win the event and not phoning it in. So yeah, they should keep it to themselves if they are going to do it, or just not do it. The only reason they get to play is because the audience believe they competing to the best of their ability. Take that belief away and the audience goes with it. andyrau: In high level professional sports, no. Its against the rules and the prize pots are not really worth the risk compared to what the players are making. College sports doesn't have a prize pool. Some card games like MtG have had it, but even they are have adopted the "told let us know and its fine, but your fucked if we find out" rule.

Now you're in the top 3. Top 3 prizes are 5kk, 1.5kk amd 1kk. Assuming that no one has an enormous edge over the other players, would you rather have the 2.5kk guaranteed or 1kk and the chance to win more. You're just pissing money away unless you're the team seeded into the final. And even if you are it's not great value. Also your knowledge about MtG rules is flawed, you can offer a split any time you want to and intentional draws are common place once you are wft8-x.

People are pointing out all the reasons why the audience does not like it and how it puts the shadow of collusion and cheating over the event. Of course it makes sense for the players to split the pot. My information about magic rules come from a top ranked judge in Boston region who used to be on the pro circuit. It might be slightly outdated, but some events do have rules against prize splitting.
