Yes? Isn't that the whole plot of Spirited Away? Isn't it similar also for Howl's Moving Castle? I mean, aren't those exactly underlying showcase of the character where they faulted in many ways and, towards the end of the movie, resolve them through a form of rite of passage? | ||

I mean, aren't those exactly underlying showcase of the character where they faulted in many ways and, towards the end of the movie, resolve them through a form of rite of passage? spirited away? the entire movie is a plot centered around a coming of age theme and the beginning of adolescence but in my opinion the core of her character is the same as it is in the end. it's kind of ridiculous to say that she matured a lot if we never really had a baseline of her immaturity before the events of the movie for comparison. all her core values were clearly there, it was just the environment that enabled her to manifest them in a positive manner i guess what i mean to say is that her entire character is moved by the plot and not the other way around, which should be the key to a strong character centered plot. i feel howl's moving castle is an exception rather than the norm, sophie's character changes the plot a lot more. if you take his other famous work eg laputa, monoke, porco rosso, totoro, etc the characters are only fleshed out enough to enable the audience to form an attachment to them. the rest of the film's focus is narrative, something which Miyazaki excels at. obv I'm not saying he doesn't give a shit about his characters, but his attention is given to the plot and his characters second. | ||

Howl's Moving Castle's Setting and Spirited Away are both portrayals of this. We can throw Ponyo which, in my opinion, is a slightly weaker version of the themes and sentiments shown in Spirited Away (still loved it). | ||
