They are comparable, but that's 3 short stories cut up during different time periods and then doubles in length (1h30) where Garden of Words is 45 minutes and is bit more unique in story (bla bla bla shoes) Well yeah they are different films. However when i watched Garden of Words i feels like 45 minutes is too short for everything that happened and when i watched it i had already watched 5cm per sec so my expectation was pretty different.
No, I was definitely feeling the same thing. He definitely could have shaped things better if he had put it longer, but I think he just really didnt have any juice to make things more fuller.

I play almost all my games in solo queue, either I'm finding an incredible amount of luck with people or I'm too high MMR.
I get the occasional asshole but I think in almost all my games, either I'm the only one yammering away and people listen OR I get some silly people in my games who like to fuck around as much as I do.

you can still tell people what to do if you have them muted

Yes, I can also go through my imaginary therapy sessions without them returning speech, but often times it's not quite the same thing.

I'm not sure how you can argue against mutual conversation, it goes both ways

Idk both films gave me a different feeling.
5 cm per second gave me the feeling that there was once something beautiful in your life. That is now a distant past cause you failed to grab it and now you live in regret and loneliness knowing you will never be complete and lost your chance to do so.
While in Garden of Words didn't give me the feeling of void but rather a crucial part of their lives where they met each other and it was something that shaped or solidified who they are. An important event of their lives that they will remember forever and be glad that past happened.
That's what i got from it.
Although iirc 5 cm per sec wasn't supposed to be the melancholic type(i forgot where i read this i think wiki or from an interview from Makoto Shinkai or someone important from 5 cm) but rather the hope in the end that both party are in a better shape now. Ironically Garden of Words i think achieved that.

i still wish it was possible to mute pings. while i don't usually get raging assholes, i get ping spammers pretty frequently.
i try not to talk in game tho, sometimes theres no point. if i think an item is good, ill say it in chat but for the most part, chat wheel commands and the occasional sarcastic well played are enough for me.

if you got a feeling of void/regret from 5cm/s i think you watched the movie wrong the message is of coping & flow of life, not of loss

me getting that feeling from 5 cm is probably just me reflecting on how my life is going on or me being super emo that i have a heavy feeling of regret/void from the movie more than the message it is trying to deliver (the moving to new chapters of life knowing you are in a fine shape or sometimes not but just try to be better)

So in what order should I watch all these anime movies, being someone completely new to them?
|
Watch them in order
5CM -> Garden of Words
They're both different in theme and symbolism. A lot of subtleties in both. I've talked about them both to death so I really can't muster much energy to write about them.
The unspoken movie: Children Who Chase Lost Voices is very curious. I didn't like it as much, but enjoyed Makoto Shinkai's stab at a more Ghibli feel to his movies.
The first story for 5CM per Second is amazing, but the second one is equally beautiful.
Garden of Words is also very beautiful and I found it quite unique, though light in content and depth, and I wasn't fond of the ending perhaps because it felt a bit awkward, those the small touches leading towards it are beautiful.

uhm normally i just rec. something like SnK or FMA or Cowboy Bebop or Wolf's Children(movie) to someone is new and looking for anime experience.
But for 5 cm and garden(those were the only ones discussed ?). Just watch them any order. I don't think the order matters or Torte is right.
Although i did watch 5 cm before garden of words

Found my old perspective on the films
In Shinkai's latest: Garden of Words, it's just a mosaic of art. Although I prefer his previous film's arch, ending and even basic plot. Garden of Words comes with a lot of sense of reach, emotionally and even physically. He flips the significance of rain that one would be accustom to from writers like Fitzgerald and enamors it with a zen-like perpetuation between the characters, who are so internally distraught and insecure, chaotic in their ageless resemblance to what we all feel at one point or another.
Similar to any Cinderella story, the analogous shoe fitting the foot is filled with a separated backstory of an older women who's lost her ability to stand, to walk and a mature boy, who's had an aimless understanding of what the next step in his life will be, with who will he be making shoes for.
I haven't really taken a good look at Garden of Words to be frank. I feel it doesn't have as much depth as 5CM Per Second, but it compensates with a lot of new elements, albeit typical story from Shinkai.
As I stated, it is greatly contrasting to Miyazaki's work which is a lot more appealing to a wider group, imaginative and quite frankly: unique in its own respect (and there are a lot of aspects of Miyazaki that cannot be replicated) . But I think Shinkai manages to achieve some much in so little time (45 minutes) to create a basic storyline, sensible characters and implied profoundness from the very start. In comparison to fully-fledged films, Shinkai's characters are barely outlined beyond being encountered or pestered by an internal problem then interacting with their other "half" so to speak (as they either share the same problem or mutually fit in one another's dysfunction). Their backstory is barely known, small tidbits to provide further analysis or hypotheticals of why they are the way they are (for example: the boy is very mature for his age because his mother is very immature, sometimes irresponsible; to the point of living her own life) while the young female adult is a bit of the contrary: caught on the wrong side of high-school predicaments and is now finding herself independent, lost and unable to fill the void of her time, significance, self.
The music is evidently the same sort of type and I've posted a lot of the piano work previously. It's bittersweet and maybe even a bit reminiscent of his last film.
Overall, this one has its moments, especially during the beginning which I draw a lot of inspiration from as I find weather to be a very good tool to depict moods you want to set. The tempo of rainy seasons to depict the characters' overall moods and perspective on the world is especially enjoyed. Rainy Season seems to have a fluid, completely relaxed and near lazy flow of dialogue, progression while the dry and heated season that follows shows a lot of rapidity in scenes and growth between the characters as well as, unfortunately, the lead-up to the coming learning of one another (when he finds out her story/situation). Then, as they resolve the issue: it rains once more and the tanka is answered.
Realizing what I wrote, the movie is very much more symbolic than realized. The use of personal space symbolized by umbrellas, the distance of their, imperfect selves, to the quiet and sudden at-peace minds they have when shielded by the rain, their morning obligations (school) and hidden from the world thanks to the garden. The symbolism of shoes is evident, though not clear-cut. That shoes are meant to symbolize their ability to walk, to go farther: that they protect you and give you steps. When Takao is making shoes for her, he's confessing a love and need to protect her, protect his "world's secret". It's romantic and tragic that he is so-shortsighted when he always looks to the skies and horizon to see hope and aspire for more.
Just a beautiful film. I wish he made more damn films.

なるかみの すこしとよみて さしくもり あめもふらぬか きみをとどめむ
なるかみの すこしとよみて ふらずとも わはとどまらむ, いもしとどめば]
TLDR: Film is 2 subtle 4 us

I don't think the characters in a majority of miyazaki's films are that much more developed they're just vessels for plot development and representations of whatever motfis he wishes to convey
children chasing lost voices was interesting in terms of shinkai trying to miyazaki without the magic of youthful innocence and a concise coherent plot I still enjoyed it for what it was though

im thinking of starting to watch naruto again
that and one piece

Dude, why would you do that to yourself, thats so much filler. Like Naruto is like 200% filler and 10% awesome stuff. There are like 400 other animes out there you could watch, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Attack on Titan, Darker Than Black Season 1(never season 2), Wolf Rain, Big O, Giant Robo and like a bunch others I can't think of that are way better than rewatching Naruto.
