For 45 minutes, I think he played the plot pretty well and the symbolism/themes in the movie are just too subtle and not emphasized enough to really add more filling to the overall story. I think that's a valid complaint. To say nothing happened is essentially just highlighting how short the film was, which, is obvious. But that doesn't actually mean nothing happened, just that enough occurred and was significant to weave a story in 45 minutes (credits included). I mean the whole plot is essentially two halves of a whole. It has everything to do with the type of film, unless there's a similar movie that does the same thing in a similar amount of time but better.

i'm glad i'm not the only one who rewatches 5cm per sec every holidays.. (fuck all haters) also Garden of Words seems lacking when you compare it to 5cm tbh

They are comparable, but that's 3 short stories cut up during different time periods and then doubles in length (1h30) where Garden of Words is 45 minutes and is bit more unique in story (bla bla bla shoes)

However when i watched Garden of Words i feels like 45 minutes is too short for everything that happened and when i watched it i had already watched 5cm per sec so my expectation was pretty different.
