Dota 2 freezes but I can still hear the sound

Eneswar Sweden10 Posts December 05 2013 13:11 GMT #1 My game randomly freezes, sometimes between 10 and 15 minutes into a game. I can still hear the sound and I can still control my guy by clicking on the minimap (I send him home to base when this happens) but the game itself is frozen. And to unfreeze it I have to restart the game. When I reconnect the freeze happens more frequently, like every 5 minutes. I really dont know why this suddenly started to happen. I have been playing this game for a year without a problem and the latest patch that was released two days ago I think did something that makes my game freeze. Yesterday I tried playing a game with only bots and the game froze way sooner then usual, within 4 minutes. Help?

Eneswar Sweden10 Posts December 05 2013 13:48 GMT #3 What i mean is the screen just freezes, nothing at all is moving on my screen but I can still hear every sound that is played. When its frozen I cant click any buttons, I cant like go into options or such, its just frozen completly. My computer doesnt freeze btw, just the game itself, I can still tab out and close the game that way. I have tried various things like verifying cache files on steam, reinstalling the game, had a ping to google during a game to see if it was my connection (its not), made sure graphic settings are latest (I use NVIDIA) and so on. I read something about that you can run some kind of dev console thing that would show you what went wrong when something goes wrong, but I cant figure out how I can check that, and even them I wont be able to open the console once my game freeze.

epok United States117 Posts December 09 2013 06:40 GMT #4 Does this occur regularly as in since you started playing dota or is this only a more recent problem? If it's regular its probably a hardware problem, if it's more recent it's more likely a software problem.

FreeZer Sweden288 Posts January 02 2014 07:56 GMT #7 I had the same problem in SC2. I could resolve it by opening task manager (Ctrl+Shift+Escape) and closing it again . Anyway, try to think what might have changed that could cause the sudden freezes. Did you update any drivers? Install new hardware? Was dota patched? The latter is hard to do something about, but the others could perhaps be rolled back.

Loljke Ukraine246 Posts September 02 2014 13:52 GMT #8 Started to have same issue like 1 week ago. And it just happened - i have installed no new drivers or so. Have been playing Dota on this PC for a year and everything was smooth, but now this freezes started. I guess its something with graphics, i have reinstalled driver but it didnt help

DropBear Australia4368 Posts September 02 2014 13:56 GMT #9 Pretty sure this is a steam issue not a dota 2 specific issue. I have had the same problem with TF2 and L4D for years. Only way I have heard to reliably fix it is to get a newer graphics card. Read newer, not necessarily more powerful. Some of the older NVIDIA cards don't like steam very much.

TechSc2 Netherlands554 Posts September 02 2014 18:10 GMT #10 Can be 4 different things: Software issue with steam/dota2 Software issue with drivers/windows Graphics card/system overheating Graphic card broken Try opening your case and blowing out all the dust out of your Graphic cards fan with a can of air or with a compressor if you have it. Reinstalling windows and then all your drivers ( newest version ) should be your second step, if step 1 and step 2 does not fix it, it is probably a dead graphics card.
