What do you call that. I remember when d2 came out everyone was acting like they sold out and made it look cartoony compared to how dark and gritty the first one was. Cant wait till number 4 comes out and everyone can start bitching about how diablo 3 was way grittier and darker than diablo 4. The color pallete and monster design. Coupled with stylistic design, D3 is more Asian-rpg, D2 is heavily gothic. If you take D3 as gritty as D2, then i don't know... There is almost no play of shadows and black colors in this game. And i dont want to start on cinematics, story, and happy followers (hidden footprints, glorious, i muted every dialog in the game, cause its unbearable). Im not saying D2 equals D1 but if you don't see the decline trend then i don't know ;( Do you really believe D1=D2=D3? There was such big gaps in the way of story telling, narration, atmoshpere, that it is almost impossible to connect all of the sequels, the problem is while D2 had the decline, it still remained CERTAIN aspects, see: gothic style, religious connotations etc. D3 erased that one. If designers don't make it cartoony or over the top gory, it'll unsettle 99% of players. Partially agree, but video-game violence is far of from real world violence, still. There was cult following for games like Mortal Kombat or Carmageddon (real version, not censored one) ;p I played that shit all day, and even if those games had faults, they were remembered to this day, because of the aspects of depicting gore (joy of seing violence, who would have thought). Which contradicts my real-life avoidance of violence. This is just plastering current ideals of maximizing profit, and apologizing on behalf of corporations. I prefer that, rather than someone calling people nostalgia-driven idiots, because they do not like current trends in gaming. PoE showed that you can make dark atmosphere with the play of shadows in isometric 3d, if you took that design into D3 people would see how out of place the dialog and story truly was, but seeing how everything is "neutrally" presented gore, no one pays attention to it. Why? Because you cannot get immersed into D3, so every argument on a board is being actually "I pity you" that you actually wanted to get immersed into D3. I believe that mistake actually help Blizzard, to make a game that is not immersive, so that people can actually repeat the content million of times, without giving it a thought, and grind that loot. To say, i don't really have that much gripe with D3 core gameplay(i play it myself, but i have some gripe still, it feels like being a gambler and wishing for luck, and its not happening), but i have a gripe with current trend of making games without immersion. It's as if they are afraid people will actually get provoked. Everyone makes games with neutral non-tainting themes, i would compare it to making an average love comedy in cinematography. It's easier to do, and will net you certain profit. The curve can be really seen with how gaming evolved or devolved in different aspects. Back then producers risked provoking because the eyes of young people were on different things. To provoke is to turn other people eyes on you. Games were easier to produce, because technology was more limited, so you had to use artistic values to differentiate between other company/product. The good example was the plethora of various game genres that existed 10-15 years ago. And even the distinct difference within the genres itself. Nowadays a big producer, who needs to spend A LOT of resources and time to produce a ROI hit, will not want to provoke risking defeat(Daikatana), they will go with the least resistance path, to attract a large number of people thar are already in the industry. Once in a time i was an idealist that believed gaming could be an "eleventh muse" but frankly, it became too heavily connected to to the technology aspect of it and current market in which it is almost impossible for an unknown artist to create something new. Well that may still happen, but it is less likely for a big producer you loved before to follow their own trends from several years ago, when they had to provoke, to make a name. Partially now it is a fault of the current audience, they grew in the "steady decline" they accepted it and probably love it (casuality). Majority does not connect to the gripes of few, because they were never there, and the gap of technology will not make them revisit those arguments. The few that feels its wrong, pours money into indie/kickstarters so that "PoE" may at least live. But honestly? I wish it was Blizzard from the get-go. D2 still has the best replayability, and im awaiting to see if ROS will tackle that.

I'm happy that I managed to sell the gold from my D3 account for $120 so I don't feel ripped off. I wish I could sell my D3 account entirely, but its tied to my SC2 account. GJ Blizzard, you found a way to trick your customers again! Thanks to Dustin Browder and the team there is at least one Blizzard game left that is worth playing. Imagine if they fucked up SC2 though, how awful would that be?!
