I feel ball lightning should be used for bows, as they have higher attack speed and you can maximize on your AOE damage. Pretty sure AOE damage is not reflected in your stats, making BL pretty bad for low attack speed DHs. Anyone else feel the same?

IIRC, ball lightning does 77% damage per hit for both the AOE and the missile, so it will scale the same regardless of your weapon choice.

Ball lightning is awesome - Period. No discussion. Constant, Decent damage, awesome effects, nice big constant aoe that goes around corner.

I use a big ass 2h xbow just to make sure I feel like firing a cannon each time I use BL.

My problem with BL is that it doesn't have the same burst as something like Cluster Arrow. My usual solution to affixes that give me trouble is to unload unholy hell upon them before they can kill me, but it just doesn't feel like BL is up to the task.

Of course, I could see BL being worlds better in a group setting where mobs have like 3X the HP and you aren't as likely to burst them down instantly anyway. In that case, I don't so much mind my damage being spread out a bit. Not to mention, you aren't as likely to one-shot yourself vs Reflect mobs due to not paying attention to affixes...

I also agree - I've been using BL but recently, I was thinking of alternatives where I can kill stuff faster. BL is great for packs of weak mobs but then HA can do the job well enough. The good thing about BL though is it's piercing ability, so it's great against stuff like invulnerable minions.

Don't know for you guys but i still using tentacles/mines/gloom to clear A3 without any problem (180k dps with SS, ~600 ra).

I use cluster bombs for elites and ball lightning for everything else :O i really dislike nether tentacles small aoe :f

You are not clearing A3 because of Tentacles. You are clearing it because your DPS and resist all is about 2 times that of most DHs.

Try Ball Lightning and never go back to Tentacle. It even shoots through walls... Probably a bug but, still does.

I agree with you, but your reasoning is wrong. The reason being that bow users by default have higher attack speed + more attack speed boosts on their gear usually, so that means while their character sheet dps number is higher, the only way to take advantage of that higher dps is to make sure they dont get bottle necked by hatred (as in the case of cluster arrow). That's why if I was using a bow, I'd probably choose BL as my main right click.

Cluster bombs is insane, you can destroy blue mobs in a 3player game so quickly its ridiculous.

Lots of good advice in this thread and im hoping you guys will help me to choose my last skill

Right now im doing cydea/azmo runs stopping by a few areas to kill elites/goblins on the way. I am using the usual devouring + BL and preparation+SS+caltrops. Now for my last skill i was using imaple with the crit rune for picking off minions and finishing off elites after mf switch. Now i fell i can do without imaple and im searching for something usefull. Keep in mind the majority of my fights are me kiting elites almost offscreen with caltrops so i need every bit of discipline for that. Only Discipline skill im thinking about is marked for death with the rune that spreads the dmg since it will help me kill elites faster. Its either marked for death or some hatred spender. Any ideas ?

My stats are 130k dps with SS, 45khp and 400AR with 1.7 attack speed.

RoV with the stun rune? If you get a stun off, it's a lot of dmg output on the elites

I think all the Elemental Arrow runes get overrated because people don't factor in opportunity cost. Say you fire BLs into a pack of 3 champs and it hits each twice, giving you 465% damage for one cast. That sounds like a lot but you could always be firing a hatred generator like Devouring Arrow for 230%ish or Spray of Teeth for even more if the splash hits the entire pack. You could use your hatred much faster with Cluster Arrow getting somewhere around double the damage per cast over BL. Dumping your hatred so fast usually kills the pack quickly and you can refill your hatred with the Vengeance passive.

I agree with this, also keep in mind they are somewhat slow moving projectiles and you will have wasted shots especially when kiting (almost always?) and definitely vs fast/teleport mobs. So while its more hatred efficient compared to cluster arrow, you cant just compare the skill weapon damage numbers against each other.

Pics of your gear setup or at least your detailed stats screen would help a lot. Your gear, passive choice, and your stats (crit chance, damage, etc) factor a lot into picking the most optimal skill setup. Although in the end, it really comes down to how you want to play your DH...

Thanks for you input guys!

So after a lil playing and snooping around the AH ive upgraded some of my items

However I cant find any bracer or helm worth paying for thats anywhere below 2mil. am i being too greedy on the stats on these two? I guess this goes with the belt, rings and amulet too.

Although i could farm ACT1 pretty easily, now its just easier. Dont think i can do act 3 though....

Hey guys, do you think magic find on DH gear is worth it? With my follower I have 140 magic find. with 56k dps (non-ss), and maybe 30k hp, but occasionally some things are really annoying to kill when I'm farming act 1.

So far I've managed to get 3 legendary/set items in 4 days with my magic find, but they were all bad, and I don't think I'm really getting any extra rares...is it possible to even get a worthwhile legendary/set farming act 1? Thoughts??

It's not possible to get worthwhile legendary/set item period. They're all junk.

Okay, like, 1% have a chance at being decent, but you can't actually try to farm them.
Average means I'm better than half of you.

depends on what you want to drop. i think justice lantern, a pretty sweet tank ring, drops in like act 3-4 hell cause its item level is like lvl 50. if you want more legendaries and sets u need alot of magic find imo. like around 300%. One way to circumvent trying to get really good dps, but magic find as well is to gear swap. Change your regular gear, to magic find gear right before u kill an elite pack.

lol yea its like killing mobs in WoW hoping to get that BoE epic you like. Except once you get it it has a good chance of having terribad stats
