The Zerg race will be announced on the 10th of this month (March), and now the Vivendi CEO has been interviewed and he said the game will come out in August.

Exactly how trustworthy is this? Doesn't Blizzard usually release a Press Release for their release date as their announcement...how could the CEO of Vivendi either slip up or be allowed to say the date?

I figured blizzard would spend at least another year tweaking everything

wow i hope this really is true, once all races are in there i cant imagine much more balance testing as it seems they have been balancing as they go rather then making units and then choosing to balance at the end. Question though, does anyone know how long games take to be manufactured once they are done all testing?

the "players think change Is bad" thing by Blizzard really dropped my hopes in SC2 becoming as good as BW, now that they are releasing it so soon it sounds like they're just going to use the easiest way of just making it noob friendly wc3-shit-clone.

I'm highly skeptical. This kind of information wouldn't be released in such a casual way.

Well, it's a tentative release date from blizzard, from what I gather of their history with release dates, it could just as well say christmas.

Roughly Translated:

The follow-up game to the online "Starcraft" looks to debut this July or August at the earliest.

Bruce Hack, a representative of Blizzard Entertainment's parent company Vivendi Games spent 6 days in Samsung Dong, Seoul at the Intercontinental Hotel and had a press conference. He announced, "We're in the last stages of developing SC2". Although Hack did not make any concrete statements about when the game will launch, it seems that once Activision and Vivendi Games close their merger in June, we are expecting SC2 to be released in July or August.

SC's follow-up game, SC2 is gorgeous with realistic images and already there is a lot of interest amongst gamers. Starcraft is a game developed by Blizzard Entertainment, a subsidiary company of Vivendi Games and has sold over 5 million CDs in Korea since 1998.

They're just overspoiled elitists who think they know everything about game design and competition and then take offense at every single letter Blizzard says.

It gets really fucking annoying when you guys don't know what something means and then go on huge ass tangents about it. And you have to admit, they're right, people are afraid of change, everyone on this board was! As a matter of fact this goes for every single game out there. They're not insulting us... -.-

On topic: This seems really really really early. Is there going to be some public beta like warcraft 3 or something? I would want them to take their time and make good decisions. Sure, they have been working on this for a few years already, but it seems even now everything is really rough and sketchy. August is just a blink of an eye away, I'm not too sure if this is good or not.

Okay so even if they are shooting for August, I'd guess like 3-4 months after that. I guess right before Christmas.

This would mean that beta is right around the corner? Beta needs to be atleast 2-3 months I'd think... If not more.

As far as waiting to release sc2 for reasons such as further balancing and tweaking, the best way to figure this out is to release it. Once released there can then be further adjustments made based on user input and patches released. I know this might start with a sc that is a little rough but I also think that It will make the game better and more specific to gamer opinions, creating a better more solid game in the long run, and let's face it when sc1 has been around as long as it has I would think that the long run is more important.

This is certainly earlier than I was expecting to see a release date, but if its true I can't help but be excited. That being said, no matter what the corporate types want blizzard is known to take their time with betas, so I kind of doubt we see it that early.

Mid August......... 2009 I think ;< .
To be honest I didn't expect this to be out before next year. I will have untrusting feelings towards this game if it's get released before Christmas this year... it just seems so unpolished to be released so early.

I should be excited, but seeing as how the news came from the CEO of the parent company and not Blizzard themselves, Im gonna hold that enthusiasm until its really official.

Unless Vivendi ruins everything, which I hope they won't, Blizzard has a history of releasing games that don't need stellar hardware. Then again, I guess I don't know how old your stuff is.

Case in point, I fear Vivendi.

Edit: Ok, late, I wrote Activision instead of Vivendi. I fear Activision too, though.

When I first heard of SC2, I was so damn excited. Now, I'm kind of scared of what will happen to BW after the release. I just got into progaming a few months ago... is it going to over that soon?

Quit worrying, guys! We all know that Blizzard always releases shitty, unbalanced pieces of buggered eyefuck. After a while they'll patch it to a playable state later in the expansion pack.

Starcraft 2 will likely bring a totally new era to pro-gaming. It hasn't even begun if SC2 can truly live up to BW.

so... sounds like whoever wrote the article just made it up. Hack probably said something to the effect of "it will be out probably after we finish merging" and whoever was writing the article took that to mean "soon" after instead of "blizzard-time" after, which is more likely.

ah this is good to know... I was starting to get pretty ticked at the Vivendi CEO for the crap he's been spouting (first the in-game advertising thing and now this "release date").
August still seems like a weird time to release a game tho; wouldn't they shoot for Christmas?

And the hype machinery starts working again.
I don't care when they release it. I buy it when it's out.

In 3 days we're going to see the zerg race. Then we will have a good overview of the 3 races and the state of the game.

They've been developing the game for a couple of years, and they obviously are trying to keep the game somewhat close to the original. With their previous experience in balancing RTS-games, I don't see why people think they should spend another year just tweaking it, especially since Blizzard have always relied on patches to solve imbalances.
Hopefully we'll see the game soon.

If blizzard says it will be released the 10th August (or something like that)

It will be released next year... they suck at releasing games in right time
( They were 2 years late with Diablo 2 patch, 1 year late with WoW expension etc.)

If so they delayed it for an entire school year. I remember thinking "halflife 2 in august?!"

and then it came out when the school year ended -_-

If so they delayed it for an entire school year. I remember thinking "halflife 2 in august?!"

and then it came out when the school year ended -_-

No Vivendi is a multicorporate enterprise. Halflife belongs to valve. Starcraft / WoW to Blizzard. Vivendi games is the subsidiary company where all distributors and developers are under.

Vivendi is in the music (universal), games, tv and telecomunication buissness.

The game is distributed by activision/blizzard and the vivendi games ceo has nothing to say in this matter.

Starcraft is a game developed by Blizzard Entertainment, a subsidiary company of Vivendi Games and has sold over 5 million CDs in Korea since 1998.

so... sounds like whoever wrote the article just made it up. Hack probably said something to the effect of "it will be out probably after we finish merging" and whoever was writing the article took that to mean "soon" after instead of "blizzard-time" after, which is more likely.

Did anyone else actually read this translation? This looks like stupid speculation on the part of whoever wrote this. The article doesn't even have a real quote from this Hack guy at all, and he doesn't really represent the game anyway. If this little article has any accuracy in it, which I doubt, I'm guessing maybe beta would be out in July or August. Or of course maybe the game actually will be out in August, but I wouldn't base that belief on this dumb news blurb.

how is this too soon, the sc2 is playable, everything is complete, all these is left is balancing. the whole god damn sc2 developmnet team is just doing balancing, balancing and more balancing. like i said before, the best way to balance it to release it and have ppl play it and figure out where needs improvement, limited brain power and man power within blizz aint gonna balance it, that will take eternity. patches can come afterwards to fix the imbalance and bugs/glitches

They're doing a little more than balancing it.

From the way they're talking, they're taking units out and putting other units in, and changing unit abilities.

Until they have the units figured out, there's no way they can build the campaign.

It's not even about that. It's about providing a quality product.
You don't put togheter a playable version and then just trow it out on the market. That's maybe how low budget companys do it but not how the big rollers do their work.

Cmon gimme a fucking break. Since when do the masses know what's acctualy good for their game? Just look at how relic did it with dawn of war in the very early stage. It was a patchmess. They jumped from imbalance to imbalance because of the "overwhelming feedback" by the community.

For every good tought out idea there comes hundreds of player who don't even care how their changes might affect the game. They just care about their races, their own shortcomings and that's it. Just look at the wow forums in it's early stage. I sure as hell don't wan't that drama.

Hell two years ago people cried about the imbalance in starcraft and that protoss is fucked against zerg.

Do you even know how many games are out there that are "just another game". There is too much at stake to just trow out a game like starcraft2 and i'm glad that people like obama are not in charge.

August sounds way early. It usually takes them a minimum of 3 months of public beta testing... after all the pressure on SC2, I could see them taking 4 or 5 months. If it took them a year to get Terran and Protoss sort of ready, you can't help but think it'll take 6 months for them to tweak Zerg. I think we won't see a beta till the end of the year.

But OMG, I can't wait to see Zerg. I heard the 10th and the 11th... what are the exact details on the time/date, anyone?

No chance in hell this is real, as Bliz hasn't even announced zerg or the beta yet. Unless, it's just a placeholder date that's totally meaningless in the big picture.

I highly doubt we'll see Zerg units on the 10th, thats Monday... We haven't heard any sort of formal announcement or promotion of this "event" have we?

IMO, Zerg units at BWWI and release at the end of the year/Q1 of 2009.

In honor of Brood War's tenth anniversary (November 30, 2008), Blizzard should release a Gold Edition of Brood War, including both campaigns and an overhauled Battle.net, including AMM, chat during lag, among other new features. The combo would come on one disk and be bargain priced ($20).

The goal is to renew interest in starcraft and give non-current players a chance to play through the campaigns and have a couple games on B.net before SC2 comes out.

What do you think?

don't trust it.

It's not a release date, it's an estimation of when it would be finalized. Which means they will push it back again and again for about a year. Haven't you guys have had enough experiance with blizzard to realize there's no way they're going to release a game that soon? They push back dates that were set in, and this ones not even a set date, it's a rough estimation.

Actually, at this point I'm confident it's going to happen. Progaming teams are dispatching representatives to attend the event and play the game... people like BoxeR, Ra, NaDa are all going to test the game. They wouldn't do this (especially the Air Force) if there was no valid confirmation of such an event.
