Hello,

I would like to host a SC2 League for money. I made a document to explain the (house) rules. I would welcome some feedback.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1It7VJ5OWFaBVZHValoQiGusTWCkjZ46emOHa-yPQa3Q/edit?usp=sharing

Thanks guys.

This screams scam to me. So you get 5 dollars for finishing the tourney, and if u get top 3 another 5 dollars. This is on top of a 50 dollar entry. So why are u paying 50 dollars for a $10 potential??? I thought you would at least win the sum or a fraction of the sum of the entry fees combined. But no. The $50 u spend will simply go back to you at the end of the tournament barring disqualification, so why pay it in the first place. I don't get it.

To prevent trolls, or flaking players. It's € 50 investment, and if you're a decent players, you will get € 55 after two weeks. That's a solid investment. However, if you're the typical player I meet on ladder, then you're guaranteed to lose your € 50. So hopefully those types of players will not sign up.

Sorry for being blunt, but everything about this is just bizarre. I have no idea why you would put so many arbitrary limitations (e.g. players must have around 100 APM).

I think you might want to pause for a moment and think about how you can bring players into your league in the first place, rather than a convoluted way to keep unwanted players out. You can deal with bad actors once there's anyone TO deal with.

I applaud the work going into it, but tbh I wouldn't touch it.
You want 10 people to wire you 50 euro and their official identity papers (why???) on the promise that you will pay them back at some point, except if you decide to discalifiy them, in which case you just keep their money.

Especially with the multiple conditions arround what you consider a "good" game, I really would not be confortable giving you that kind of money. Even if you are honest and not just literaly scamming 500 euros out of people, I would worry that two weeks into it I would have to fight endlessly to get my cash back because you decided my APM is too high or you don't like my playstyle so you just get to take all my money. Frankly I'm not sure many people will get in board.

You could check the Platinium Heroes or Cranky Ducklings discord channel, to my understanding they have an active community of players of many skill level interested to play in a somewhat more welcoming environement than the ladder. I think they have leagues too.

Asking for €50 signup is bananas. I doubt anyone will deposit €50 with you as a "solid investment" to get back €55. Basically you can run away anytime with €400 and there is no way to find you back. Not even known casters would ask for €50 signup. My advice: forget about asking for money. Just don't. It makes your effort look like a scam and realistically you will have a hard time asking for €1 registry fee.

> Exceeding the maximum APM by >20%: immediate disqualification from the League.

Imagine winning all your games, but accidentally queued up too many drones or did one extra warpin, so you forfeit $50.

I'm actually holding a tournament too. $10k to enter but if your game doesn't end exactly at 9:52 and you have exactly 1024 resources lost, then i keep your entrance fee. Otherwise I'll pay you ten bucks. DM if you want a spot.

Ignoring the "buy in" part of the event, as it was the primary focus of most posts above me, I want to focus how APM is an inaccurate measure of skill.

I hover around 4k MMR, averaging just under 400 apm on average and had a higher apm than Serral when we played in a tournament (he won the series, and the tournament), but nobody is confusing me as the better player. On the otherhand, there were successful pro players with <100 apm such as GoOdy. Alternatively, Efficiency Per Minute (EPM) would be a much better metric if you want to go down this path, but even EPM (or micro, a mechanic in the game you seem to refer to as a gimick in the past) doesn't win games.

Could you clarify if you mean the average APM in the game, or a particular APM spike? How is APM defined for you? If you were to host an event like this, I would recommend finding a mod that displays current and average APM to the players in game.

By the way, in the last 10 ladder games recorded on sc2replay that does not involve an autoleave, you have 5 games where you exceeded 100 APM (110, 118, 127, 111, 102). Of the remaining 5 games where you were below 100 APM (95, 79, 96, 93, 79), three of those were below the 5 minute mark. I think your requirements are fairly well tailored to your stats but you might need to tweak it up a little bit more, otherwise you run the risk of having to DQ yourself (question: do you get your deposit back if you are disqualified yourself?)

This is either incredibly misguided or a scam. I am leaning towards unbelievably misguided.

The first player will pick the first map. The game will be played. Regardless of the outcome, the second player can then pick the second map. That game will also be played. Games will not exceed 25 minutes playtime. A game will be stopped at the 25 minute mark. The winner will be determined by the organiser.

You can't be serious about this ahahaha

This is the weirdest I've read in a long time. If a player exceeds the the maximum accepted APM by 0% - 20% they lose the game? If it exceeds more than 20% total disqualification?`Does this guy wants some kind of sc2 paralympics for players with low apm?

I think the issue is trying to mix a money league with arbitrary rules, as well as capping the skill level.

You end up having to make so many rules and qualifiers, so vigilantly look out for Smurfs (your rules seem solid there) that it ceases to be a truly competitive lower league experience.

I’ve never been able to pull it off. A combo of players who are rapidly ascending and say, plat but maybe with a masters ceiling, inactive ex masters players who haven’t played in forever, and a cohort of ‘plat for life’ people. Always ended up with crazily lopsided matches trying to do capped competitions

If you wanna do a for fun league that’s capped in various ways to create a more fun experience than ladder, a little different I think that can work. But maybe not something competitive for money. For example a ‘no cheese’ league with refs could be pretty enjoyable vs ladder horrors

APM restrictions, nah. I haven’t seriously laddered in literally 6/7 years and would probably be a legit plat player now, but I’m still a 200-220 apm player

Hope you take the feedback in the spirit it’s intended

Ok, guess it's time to make an apm limiting mode. It'll display available actions per minute and slowly deplete over time and refresh each minute, sounds like a reasonable way to spend time.
