Muted Response to Bernie Sanders at South Carolina Church
WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. — The problem began as soon as Bernie Sanders walked into the dining room of the revered, and predominantly black, Brookland Baptist Church. Instead of flocking to him, as people do at his large college rallies, many of church’s 780 members looked up for a moment, then quietly went back to eating their Sunday feast — unmoved as Mr. Sanders, the Democratic senator from Vermont, tried to work the room.
He made remarks at a microphone next to a buffet table offering chicken, collard greens and dinner rolls. The line at the table kept moving as Mr. Sanders and Benjamin T. Jealous, a former N.A.A.C.P. president, spoke. The Brookland Baptist congregation proved to be a tough crowd.
“We have in America today a broken criminal justice system,” Mr. Sanders said, pausing briefly after this line from his stump speech, which is usually met with applause. Here it garnered very little.
His visit underscored Mr. Sanders’s difficulty in strengthening his support among black voters in South Carolina, who make up more than half of registered Democrats heading into the state primary this Saturday. While some applauded politely as he offered now-familiar lines about racial discrimination, the loudest claps came when he talked about President Obama.
To be fair, I probably would have gone back to eating too, but that was a pretty big failure to read the situation. When people are eating like that you should be working the room introducing yourself to tables and chatting with the audience. You give the speech when people are done eating. This was pretty 'please clap' worthy.
South Carolina is ranked 10 on highest obesity rate in the country. Food is very important to these people. Sanders should have understood that.
After almost every official in this Texas town was arrested, black water started coming out of the pipes
That’s because all but one top official in her city of 7,500, about 130 miles southwest of San Antonio, is facing some kind of criminal charge. The mayor, mayor pro tempore, a council member and the city manager were arrested this month on sweeping bribery and conspiracy charges. And another member of the city council is in a federal detention center after he admitted to smuggling undocumented Mexican immigrants across the border.
Surprise surprise these hispanic officials in Texas are helping illegal aliens enter this country.
In other news, basically some protestor turns the light off, Trump says this will save him money on renting out the room. When the light turns back on, Trump demands that the light be turned off. At the end, everyone starts chanting "Turn off the light." This is incredible haha.
Unions Say a Majority of Their Members Support Hillary Clinton
In an effort to dispute what they say is a false narrative that union voters are closely split between Hillary Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a group of more than 20 unions representing more than 10 million workers released a statement on Monday reaffirming support for Mrs. Clinton. “Secretary Clinton has proven herself as the fighter and champion working people and their families need in the White House,” says the statement, which was embraced by several large unions, including the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, the American Federation of Teachers ,and the Service Employees International Union. “That is why, of all unions endorsing a candidate in the Democratic primary, the vast majority of the membership in these unions has endorsed her.”

And this is why a 1:1 debate with trump should terrify anyone.
As Danglars pointed out yesterday, this is one of the main draws with Trump. Everyone knows that he will remorselessly pummel Hillary in the general election debates in a way that no other republican will.
GREENVILLE, S.C. — The term ‘socialist’ once was used as an epithet in American politics. Perhaps no more.
In a year in which Bernie Sanders, a self-described ‘Democratic Socialist,’ is running a competitive primary campaign for the White House, a new survey finds that a healthy portion of Democratic primary voters are favorably inclined toward socialism.
Nearly six-in-ten Democratic primary voters believe socialism has a 'positive impact on society,' according to polling conducted this month for the right-leaning issue advocacy group American Action Network and provided to POLITICO.
Democratic voters in every age group, every gender, and every race view socialism favorably, according to the early February telephone poll of 1,000 likely Democratic primary voters fielded by Republican firm OnMessage Inc. and commissioned by AAN, which is tied to the Congressional Leadership Fund super PAC dedicated to House Republicans. And among people 45 and under — a group that has helped power Sanders’ primary performances — the ideology is preferred to capitalism by a margin of 46 percent to 19 percent.
The polling made a specific point not to mention Sanders or Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, according to AAN president Mike Shields, as part of an effort to avoid findings that simply reflect that race. Instead, he said, it was inspired by a pair of television interviews in which Democratic Party chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz was pressed on the difference between a Democrat and a Socialist.

As long as the audience is not packed with his crazy supporters, it should be fine. That is an event he is running himself. He can't pull that crap if ABC is hosting the event.

I question how much independent and swing voters are really interested in that or will find that at all appealing. Him going full clown show on stage will only please his base, not the people who decide general elections.

And exactly at which of the republican debates was the audience packed with his supporters?
I just wanted to say that the american presidential race is pure comedy gold. I have not laughed this hard for a long time. Its not just the comedy shows (like Colbert) making fun of them, its the actual news channels too which have just become hillarious. Its like watching parody of the largest scale.
I just hope some doofus will get elected in the end and run the country to the ground. I cant imagine the amount of jokes that we will all get out of that. Or imagine Trump getting elected and then showing that it was all a ruse and he really is a super liberal guy playing a character for all this time. I want to see the carnage. I want to see the dirt. I want to see your world burn.

Exactly why is this relevant to a 1 on 1 debate, since none of them were?

Well this certainly has been the most entertaining US election I've seen so far, I'll give you that.

Everyone in the parallel universe Trump supporters live in knows that he will remorselessly pummel Hillary in the general election debates in a way that no other republican will and avoid looking like a buffoon with no policy knowledge whatsoever and no serious policy plans.

I think folks are underestimating how large the push back will be against Trump in the general election. Once it goes down to a 1 on 1, its going to be a very different contest.

I think you underestimate the effect of someone being clearly weaker than someone else. Whether Trump goes nuts or not, having a commanding presence and clearly showing himself to be dominant over Clinton or Sanders has giant psychological effects. I imagine Trump will tone down the racism in a potential general and just be real obnoxious and strong. So much of politics is about feeling like you're behind a movement and somewhat identifying with the candidate. When that candidate gets torn in half in a debate, it kills the mood. It will not only lower voter turnout but also likely make some people switch sides. All Trump needs to do is move towards center a bit, focus on all the ways he'll fix healthcare, then be incredibly relentless against his opponent. I honestly think Trump would do well in a general election.

This. What matters isn't so much what people hear substance or policy-wise. What matters is what people feel. As a salesman, Trump understands this. The emotional connection is paramount. Hell, you don't even have to look that far into the past to see a shining example of this in action: Barack Obama.
EDIT: And as I have been saying all along, Hillary's biggest problem is that she doesn't make anyone's panties wet. Trump has no such problem.

Clinton would show anything but weakness in front of Trump. She would be assertive and combative while displaying a firm grasp on the facts and on the policy. I am genuinely hoping for a Trump vs Clinton confrontation in the general election. Not only would the Democrats assuredly keep the White House, they would probably make substantial gains in Congress. The Republican party would also at least partially implode. It'd be a beauty to witness.

Almost every poll in creation has him rated as the most disliked candidate recorded, with an unfavorable rating at like +60%. He is right up there with Bashar al-Assad. As much as people claim that everyone hates Clinton, her national ratings don’t even come close. People really dislike Trump and he would need to be magic to get that to change.
Hillary would destroy Trump I think. Trump is all power, no technique.
Bernie would be screwed. TIL he once advocated defunding NATO and the CIA-- while there is definitely some context and nuance to those positions, that will be lost to Trump and the media: the narrative is either he's a flip flopper or a loon. The stream of shit-Bernie-said will just keep coming.
Hillary's popularity rating has been waaaay up and waaaay down. She's a polarizing figure who's been around for a long time. I'm really not concerned about it.
