Sex equality is so similar in my mind as gender and color equality that it just boils my mind when I see people who are either women or black arguing against same sex marriage... I saw a black guy on the TV today discussing how just because its a minority doesn't mean we should respect their rights at equal marriage and benefits (he was a bit more toned down but this is the jist of what he said) and all I wanted to do was bust through my screen and strangle the guy. You think, after going through years of segregation, you'd grow empathy for a similar cause. This isn't as much a valid position as much as it is just a rant but my mind bleeds sometimes listening to people speak and that was no different.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intersectionality

It's actually a really interesting topic, but I haven't delved in to it too much.

On the other hand, it makes sense, I mean people have different beliefs and relate to different things in different ways, so it's completely understandable, I personally can't fully relate or understand all the troubles another person has. Just like how there are so many divisions within the LGBTQ movement, and they are so divided, and then there are issues with race or gender or sexuality between different groups. That's why I find it funny when people label all feminists as radical man haters, it's hard or impossible to generalize about minority groups. If you want to look at the various goals of minority groups as far as gender and sexuality are concerned, just glance at our own http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=402276, it's got some good examples although you have to dig through a lot of crap iirc.

Intersectionality is a great concept on its own, but it has been used by certain radicals to basically indict the entirety of western civilization for crimes against [insert group here]. You have to be really careful when you talk about interrelationships of various factors causing systematic discrimination against a group because it's really fucking easy to conflate "things that exist in a discriminatory society" with "things that perpetuate discrimination."

I've also encountered intersectionality as a stonewalling technique when debating against more radical feminists when they construct a very nebulous, all-encompassing "rape culture" that pretty much damns every interpersonal relationship of any kind as somehow perpetuating negative, dominant behaviour. Obviously this is a minority opinion among feminists, but it highlights what I perceive to be a danger when using the theory of intersectionality. To me, it doesn't even matter if this is a justified opinion; the problem is that once you decide to view everything through the lens of how it might relate to discrimination and then assert that discrimination is a necessary component of those things, you've pretty much said everything is worthless and that we need to start again. This, to me, represents a step backwards.

I feel like intersectionality is a novel approach which has a lot of power, but which is so broadly applicable and broadly defined that you can exploit it really easily to say very complicated, simultaneously isolated and universal things. I also detest the post-modern interpretation of intersectionality which constructs a matrix so splintered that practically every person forms a unique subgroup because this pretty much kills any sort of structured analysis.

tl;dr intersectionality is cool shit but it's really powerful

EDIT: There's also the tendency of some people to move from intersectionality viz. every situation has a multitude of influencing factors which multiply each other to a sort of very individualistic view that focuses on how "you can never understand what it's like to be X therefore you can't say anything about it." The latter view is an excuse not to think and encourages arguments based on emotion rather than reason. I may not know what it's like to be a woman, but that shouldn't mean that I can't understand why women shouldn't be treated in certain ways. If I can't be made to understand it, then it's a problem with the arguments, not me.

There was big news early Thursday morning when Fannie Mae announced that it will be paying the Treasury a whopping $59.4bn dividend, just a day after Freddie Mac announced a more modest but still welcome $7bn payment.
:D
Because...
The big payout is mainly a result of Fannie’s recognition that it will be profitable enough in the future to possibly using some $50bn in deferred tax assets
:/
so...
the dividend payment sent to the government is possible in part because of the future tax payments that won’t be sent.

I'd still like to see these mortgage giants phased out of government involvement and sold. Gradually end the conservatorship, and let private mortage-backed security providers back into a market previously dominated by companies with the implicit backing of the federal government. All the subsidies that FNMA/FHLMC currently administer are better off with the HUD; put the true cost back in the federal government's actual budget.

You look at stories like this one and wonder why the story. Save it for when the full bailout is repaid.

Having lived in Cincinnati during the Bengals' lost years of the 1990s, I used to pray for a television blackout just for the chance to watch quality professional football.

If Sen. John McCain gets his wish, those blackouts will become obsolete. McCain introduced the Television Consumer Freedom Act of 2013 on Thursday, billing it as an avenue to "help shift the landscape to benefit television consumers."
Top 100 Players of 2013
Make sure you vote for the Top 100 players of 2013. Voting ends May 31. Get your vote in. More ...

The heart of the legislation is an effort to curb "bundling," which would allow customers to purchase channels on an individual basis rather than paying for packages of channels they won't watch.

McCain's bill also aims to eliminate the sports blackout rule, which prohibits local television stations from airing an NFL game that is not sold out. While that proposal has no shot of standing up in privately owned stadiums, McCain wants it implemented for any team whose stadium was funded with taxpayer dollars.

"When the venue in which these sporting events take place has been the beneficiary of taxpayer funding," McCain said, via the Los Angeles Times, "it is unconscionable to deny those taxpayers who paid for it the ability to watch the games on television when they would otherwise be available."

Missouri just passed, by veto proof majority, the most comprehensive nullification of federal law in American history.

http://blog.tenthamendmentcenter.com/2013/05/missouri-legisl...

As law, HB436 would nullify virtually every federal gun control measure on the books – or planned for the future. It reads, in part:

All federal acts, laws, orders, rules, and regulations, whether past, present, or future, which infringe on the people’s right to keep and bear arms as guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution and Article I, Section 23 of the Missouri Constitution shall be invalid in this state, shall not be recognized by this state, shall be specifically rejected by this state, and shall be considered null and void and of no effect in this state.

(2) Such federal acts, laws, orders, rules, and regulations include, but are not limited to:
(a) The provisions of the federal Gun Control Act of 1934;
(b) The provisions of the federal Gun Control Act of 1968;
(c) Any tax, levy, fee, or stamp imposed on firearms, firearm accessories, or ammunition not common to all other goods and services which could have a chilling effect on the purchase or ownership of those items by law-abiding citizens;
(d) Any registering or tracking of firearms, firearm accessories, or ammunition which could have a chilling effect on the purchase or ownership of those items by law-abiding citizens;
(e) Any registering or tracking of the owners of firearms, firearm accessories, or ammunition which could have a chilling effect on the purchase or ownership of those items by law-abiding citizens;
(f) Any act forbidding the possession, ownership, or use or transfer of any type of firearm, firearm accessory, or ammunition by law-abiding citizens; and
(g) Any act ordering the confiscation of firearms, firearm accessories, or ammunition from law-abiding citizens.

Fuck yeah Missouri!

Doubt it'll stand though. 14th amendment has been judicially accepted to trump the 10th amendment...pretty much forever. Nice try Missouri, I was/am rooting for you, but it's mostly symbolic.

(Unless Missouri decides to say "fuck this" to the Union all together. Also not viable because people are pussies and refuse to upset the status quo, and then proceed to do nothing but complain about it.)

So, something at the federal level guarantees Missouri citizens to have something. However, something at the federal level also prohibits them from possessing that thing in certain ways, so we're going to only nullify the latter while listening to the former.

I feel like the southern states are going through their angsty pre-teen phases. For the third time.

Fuck yeah Missouri!

I'm pretty sure the "fuck you Union" line of reasoning was answered by an incredibly lengthy and costly war...

Now that I actually read what A and B are I have to say that Missouri is the craziest state I have ever heard of in my entire life.

Sweet Jesus man, pay attention to the news more. This isn't even close to some of the batshit-crazy legislation we've seen from southern states.
A sound mind in a sound body, is a short, but full description of a happy state in this World: he that has these two, has little more to wish for; and he that wants either of them, will be little the better for anything else.

There are a hundred different ways to reject the Union without resorting to warfare. The Confederate States simply tried it because they had a fighting chance (they did) and it was the most expedient way to accomplish their goal.

(a) The provisions of the federal Gun Control Act of 1934;
(b) The provisions of the federal Gun Control Act of 1968;
(c) Any tax, levy, fee, or stamp imposed on firearms, firearm accessories, or ammunition not common to all other goods and services which could have a chilling effect on the purchase or ownership of those items by law-abiding citizens;
(d) Any registering or tracking of firearms, firearm accessories, or ammunition which could have a chilling effect on the purchase or ownership of those items by law-abiding citizens;

This is one of the crazier laws that I've seen at least. Most of the time when they say "crazy southern laws" its mostly a demeaning term tword the mostly republican controlled governments of the south.

I understand and agree about 'crazy' statement. However, your link lacks the guana to qualify. Shakaka!

Why, exemptions. Not force, it's enabling citizens to their current rights. If they change or remove the second, then it might be heading for Guanaritaville. Weird mood today sorry

I remember that one and didn't think it was as insane as making an obviously unconstitutional law that unlike the example above you intend to actually enforce because the mandatory owning of a gun law was unenforceable with no penalties fro breaking it.
