So i know most players and commentators call the Zealot the 'Zelot' but 'Zealot' just sounds so much better and makes so much more sense. Heres why:
First of all I think we can all agree that almost all English words come from prefixes therefore wheres the prefix in 'Zelot'? Well if you pronounce it without the a, there is none. Therefore 'zelot' isn't even a word. The word 'Zealot' comes from the prefix 'Zeal'(and its pronounced 'ZEEL' not 'ZEL') which means "Enthusiastic devotion to a cause, ideal, or goal and tireless diligence..."(www.freedictionary.com) This fits the Zealot perfectly, as he always says "My life for Aiur" and such.
Second of all, theres a freakin A in the word why would you just ignore that. I don't recall blizzard ever admitting that the Zealot was supposed to be called 'Zelot' so why assume the a is silent?
So thats why I still and always shall call the Zealot 'Zealot' and not the 'zelot'. I think i made a pretty convincing argument what do you think?

Zeel awt makes more sense. but the english language doesnt work that way, and thus: Zell awt
to clarify, the english language is a bastard in the world of languages. With it being a bastard, english often makes up its own rules.

American accents, that's why!

zeal·ot/ˈzelət/ Noun: A person who is fanatical and uncompromising in pursuit of their religious, political, or other ideals. A member of an ancient Jewish sect aiming at a world Jewish theocracy and resisting the Romans until ad 70.
That's your answer. English is a language with many exceptions, and like many other languages, not pronouncing words correctly make you seem uneducated and stupid.
|
Dictionary.com says you're wrong. That's why.
Edit: Copy pasted from their pronunciation thing: [zel-uht]
Also english is well known for breaking it's own rules and shit. My name is Treavor for example. However there's no way in hell To pronounce that correctly while actually saying the A.
The base word itself changes when going from zeal to zealot. I know there's other words that do this as well I just can't think of them at the moment. Blizzard didn't make up "zealots" they've existed for a longass time. So to say "well blizzard didn't say they were supposed to be called zealots." doesn't really have any base. You're naming it after something that already exists so you're going to use the same pronunciation.

zealous has a short 'e' sound... food for thought.

Standards of common use and the entirety of academic English linguistics disagree with you.

You can't really have a discussion about it.
It is pronounced Zelot, end of story. The sky is blue and you say Zelot.
Regardless of how much you want either fact to change, they are still the facts. Do yourself a favor and pronounce it Zelot, so if you ever happen to use the world in real-life, you don't end up looking ridiculous.
|
Ummm, zealot is a word too... pronounced exactly as the casters do it.
Zeelot sounds better though. Honestly English is a pretty fail language :/

Alternatively, you can go Stephano style and blame it on zee French accent
Zeeeaalot for life.

I have been using zelot for so long that zeelot actually sounds horrible on my ears.
Also, I am not positive but I am pretty sure it changes from ee to eh because of the o.
Zealous Jealous
|
When we would ask our English teacher in high school "Why is this like that?", she would say "Because fuck you, deal with it!".
Well, i'm paraphrasing, of course
|
I remember when I used to think it was a Zeelot back in BW. Also I called the Paladon from Diablo 2 a puh-lah-din or something like that.
I still know a streamer that call them Zeelots though, and don't change to zelots.

Unfortunately our language is reeeeeally fucking dumb.
I'm kinda used to Zel awt now anyway. Zeel awt sounds so weird..
|
Origin of zealot word - Ζηλωτές zelotes, so I guess zelot is just fine

Zealous Jealous
So if I am jealous I have jeal? or jealousy?
If it's the latter, zeal should be zealousy! :O
Zealots are now called zealousylots.

I was just giving examples on why I think the o changes the pronunciation
