Keep this civil, guys |
Welcome to video game communities. They're either full of a bunch of children, or full of a bunch of children who fantasize that they're super mature professionals. People just like to make themselves feel better by acting like they're sophisticated and mature---but trust me, your valiant e-mail sending to Razer is not going to go down in textbooks about stopping racism. You writing angry essays about Scarlett's gender issues is not going to create some magical utopia of peace and understanding.
These may as well be the same people who change their profile pictures on facebook to stop child abuse for a day. True racism is people getting the shit beat out of them in the street. Or people getting the shit knocked out of them for being transgender. Discrimination against women isn't someone calling a transgender a "he" on a lay report thread, it's a woman getting actually abused.
Stop acting like you are helping some noble cause. None of you are doing anything but being a bunch of pissants powertripping over ruining someone's life while feeling so goooood that you're stopping racism in the SC2 community.

I am trying to keep the racist slurs out as much as I can. Means 99% of the time I'll use profanity instead (which tends to be worse tbh) and not too proud about it, but denying that and hiding it makes it only worse.

what is offensive/racial language? Cunt, Nigger, Kike, Faggot, etc. I don't really see how cunt is offensive, and I've never personally heard the word Kike ever. Acting in a brazen and offensive manner online just because you can avoid the repercussions that would follow in real life is no excuse to do it. I don't disagree, I don't think it's necessarily "ok" to act like a dick on the internet when you wouldn't in real life. However, let's follow through with your analogy. If I called you a racist slur on the basketball court, which of the following is more likely: A) You tell me to go fuck myself, and don't play basketball with me anymore B) Go complain to my boss and try to get me fired I think it's pretty obvious the difference between the two. Not many people are saying that it's great for Destiny to be rude and offensive, but rather the reaction which resulted was unwarranted considering the other options. People who don't like his stream can just not watch it. I don't even watch his stream. But it's not like he did it at a tournament or live event or anything of the sort. Your two examples don't really fully explain the Destiny situation. If we are going to use the basketball example, "B" would be valid because you would be playing a basketball game as a representative of your company, so it would be justifiable for the person to go to your boss if you called him the n-word during said basketball game. Wasn't my basketball analogy, I was just drawing his out to its conclusion. Even so, I disagree with you. If I and another employee of my company were playing basketball, I think my point stands. I could call him whatever I wanted outside of work, and there would be no business to involve the company at all. Whether or not Destiny's steam is private enough is a different story, which is why I don't think the basketball game was a good analogy in the first place. But if it's being used, I stand behind what I said. Anyone I worked with couldn't go to my boss and say I called them a mean word outside of work.
Okay, that's fair. I guess i was imagining that it was a company sponsored basketball game against another company, so as to make the game less private and more of an analogy to the Destiny game, however your point is well taken.
One thing you should learn is that as soon as you use absolutes in your speech, you lose all credibility. To be specific: No, actually, not EVERYONE uses the N, G, Fa, or W word. I, in fact, have never used the N word, and stopped using the G and Fa word when I was 16 and learned about how it affected other people in my sociology class. If the "W" word is "whore" then I will admit I use it around my male friends but never in the presence of a female, regardless of how close a friend they are.
So before you start pretending everyone is the same as you, maybe you should be less of an idiot and realize everyone is different and there are TONS of people that don't use those words and feel that the use of those words is a VERY bad thing.

I'm not a Destiny fan, by any means. I can probably count the number of times I've watched his stream on one hand. And, being as the thread has gotten so big, this has probably been said before, but here it is again.
You knew what you were getting with Destiny. ROOT knew it. Complexity knew it. Quantic knew it. You all knew it.
This isn't a big revelation like the Orb and Katu situations where we have a perceived notion of how a person acts while working in their particular field, suddenly being turned on its head by some outlandish comments. Destiny has always been like this and most likely will always be like this.
This community has gotten a far too strong taste of blood in their mouths from the actions that companies will take on their say so, and are more than willing to take up arms or destroy anyone that strikes their fancy.
Many of the controversies that have gone around here, I've been in the lynch mob group. Not anymore. Today, I'm ashamed to call myself an SC2 fan.

It's not so much that he uses those words, it's about his negative personality conflicting with how we (SC2 community) want outsiders to perceive Starcraft 2 figureheads as a representation of our community.

any international manufacturer of PC peripherals will not sponsor a team whose representatives have the constant silly outbursts Destiny has. this applies to intel, AMD, logitech etc etc. don't blame the people making these organizations aware of the outbursts.
the larger Destiny's audience the higher the probability of the inevitable "complaint email". the larger the audience the more money Destiny receives from the streaming company.
if you are going to practise "shock jock" tactics then mainstream sponsors will avoid you. this was true long before Destiny or SC2 arrived on this planet.
welcome to the real world.
