Last night I was watching Destiny's stream when an interesting debate arise. I am not sure of the history behind this debate but Destiny and some guy i didn't catch the name of, lets call him Bob, were talking about the N-word and it got me thinking. I luckily had a friend with a major in language and I asked him what he thought about the N-word controversy. When I was asking him about his thoughts, i added the spread of controversy I hold to be true through out my life; If a white person uses the N-word then it is often controversial, like how Bob and Destiny debate over; if an Asian uses the N-word it is not as controversial as compared to when a white person uses the N-word; finally if a black person uses the N-word there is little to no controversy. His response was enlightening, he said that racial slurs comes about through conflicts in an era, and in today's days and age the N-word should not bring about a conflict of the past. So if someone starts a conflict because the N-word was used by a certain race then i believe this fuels racism; The conflict in the past should be healed to pave a better future. I am not saying that we should forget about slavery because we should learn from our past mistakes.

Bob had a really good point also but after watching OneMoreGame his point lost substance. Bob said that the use of profanity and the N-word will drive sponsors away from the SC2 community. The hosts OneMoreGame uses profanity often but they are growing and they have many big name sponsors. You can argue that it is the mood of the show that leads to the use of profanity but same can be applied to Destiny's stream. Destiny brought up the use of "rape", "murder", and "gay" as words of minor slander and controversy, in the gaming community, but does not have the same backlash as the N-word. Going back to the N-word, Bob also brought up professionalism as a streaming progamer. This is also interesting to me. Should progamers have a different mood than that of talk shows like OneMoreGame? Lets look at extreme cases: If President Obama uses the the N-word on TV(not gaming related) I think you will hear many of your friends talk about it and it will politically hurt him. Why? professionalism or lack of. Now what if Boxer uses the N-word, I think the same outcome will arise; many of your friends will talk about it and it could hurt his name. Same reason professionalism or again lack thereof. However at the end of the day Destiny's stream is his own and Bob should not impose his views. Destiny's career could be hinder by his use different words but I am sure Destiny is well aware of this. With or without Destiny the gaming community is growing but i am sure fans of Destiny would like Destiny to be a part of the growth. The only thing Destiny have to do is be professional from time to time in staged events and he should be fine. Who knows, he might be perfectly fine the way he is and the definition of gaming professionalism is evolving to include words like "rape" and "nigger/nigga".

Side Note: It is also interesting how different variation of the N-word have different effect, i.e., "nigger" is most controversial but "nigga/nig" is really controversial. I guess it is because the connotation of "nigga" is not as derogatory as "nigger".

Words are only as potent as how much importance you place on them. If someone is being racist you can tell, if they are not then they are not

1 question: Why do you say "the N-word" throughout the whole OP and then mention the actual word only at the end of it?

Anyway I don't see how this discussion is SC2 specific.

^ this man speaks the truth.

EDIT: Destiny "became famous" from his "bad manner" and "foul language" (if you want to call it that), Obama saying it would destroy his character.

to quote Young Jeezy, "you can't assasinate my character, i ain't actin."

Chris Rock has answered this question already :

NSFW language and video title
+ Show Spoiler +

You might not mean bad by using it, but it's just 1 word. Remove it from your vocabulary. It's that simple. There is nothing good coming out of using it. It offends people. It proves your immaturity.

Also, I have no idea why you felt the need to make this thread in SC2 general.

Didn't we discuss this to death after some random State of the Game episode where iNcontroL and Destiny were sparring over the use of language?

You relayed a story but haven't really given a direction for discussion.

Where do you want this to head? The subject has been spoken about a hell of a lot in the community.

Yes, they both had differing opinions and couldn't come to a consensus on the issue.

Destiny seems to be smart enough, plus everyone knows what to expect from Destiny. Not to mention he seems to have placed himself into a situation in which turning back would be suicide.

*sigh*

People of stature that gain that stature through politeness and respect will of course looked down upon if they suddenly start using slurs. So if Boxer of Obama started cursing randomly at public appearances, of course it would look bad.

I'm black and I'm not offended, people shouldn't be, but I can understand if people want to be offended still. Either way, it doesn't really matter.

This subject has been talked about before and I believe Destiny went on State of the Game to talk about word choice and what is "proper." I think context is what helps define a word in daily conversation, but knowing your audience and medium is also critically important.

Context tends to be lost on the internet, especially if you are speaking through a text-based format. Also, depending who is the listener, they could infer the wrong thing based on their own personal history and experiences surrounding that word, or lack their of. Some may say "well that is on them" and to an extent this is certainly true, but I think that argument has a side to it that is kind of like "well its their fault for lighting a match where I was throwing my gasoline around." It kind of taking the issue and pushing it on other people, and for better of worse we kind of have to talk self-responsibility when we can because the next person may not. Its like, being the bigger man in that case.

and in today's days and age the N-word should not bring about a conflict of the past.

The word has more connotations than a simple embodiment of a conflict in the past. This word has been extensively throughout generations and it has its own definition. If it is defined as something detrimental to a race, then it's obvious its intentions are poor.

If we are playing a game and I playfully call you a nigger, bitch, etc. The intention of the word is to demean you playfully to emphasize how competitive I am currently with you. The scenario my friend and I are in is recognizable and thus when I insult him, he knows my intentions are fine and since none of us are African-American, we know the demeaning effect is less than the definition.

Okay now use that with a group of strangers watching. They know you're not being racist, but they also know that you're throwing around the word publicly with little to no care.

Destiny has all rights to use whatever language he wants. How we interpret the scenario is up to us. We can assume he's not racist, but we can also assume that he pays little attention to the choice of words he wants to use to express himself.

It's not a question of intelligence or being good at improv. Scrabble, it's just how one wants to be perceived by others and what one wants from others. If I want to maintain my viewers, I would usually avoid racist slurs.

If I am confident that my viewers don't care, then I won't care and thus won't use the N-word.

Case fucking closed. Such a dead horse topic.

Why are we bringing this up again? Nothing is going to change. Destiny and any streamer/pro player for that matter, has the right to say whatever they want. Competitive gaming has been growing hugely despite the fact that people don't always use "clean" language (ie. Idra in interviews) If you honestly think that no one uses words like that in real professional life, you are horribly naieve.
Talk not to me of blasphemy, man; I'd strike the sun if it insulted me.

I want to say that I'm torn on this issue.

While I understand the idea of artistic integrity and the idea that Destiny does not want to change who he is for anyone (Even if it is at the expense of others), I don't know if I agree.

A word can only be painful to someone who has the victim mentality and therefore is living in some sort of other reality where they went through this crazy situation of slavery that they had no part of and shouldn't bitch about a word that is only a word and context of the word is more important than the word itself. If you say nigger and mean it in a racist mind set then that should be recognized but just saying the word as a word and not as a way to put someone down like in some kind of joke or something as that should also be recognized as that not some sort of mass racist kkk conspiracy or some bullshit that it seems to be perceived as for some reason.

TLDR version- Don't let a word be painful to you as a person and take context into consideration. (aka don't be such a bitch about a word)

Language is all about usage. It is commonly accepted that the word you used no longer means that of "a pile of sticks" but in fact is now considered a homophobic slur.
