I was watching an INcontrol coaching session, and this guy Aquanda joins the game - and somehow it sounds familiar from Warcraft2 ladder - or something - not really sure, but i was sure i had some ring to it.
Anyways, are there any old Warcraft2 players around here? I'm talking IGL - cases ladder - kali.net
And i didnt really connect INncontrols name - but does it come from The IN clan? Just some thoughts.. and if there are anyone from IN clan - please make youself known!:-) or other really really old clans/teams.
I myself went under the name Coban during War2 and was top20 on cases a couple of times - good - but not godly like some other players.

incontrol doesnt have anything to do with IN clan, just his name.
there was afew IN members at the first of beta, like INbashkir i think? but I wasnt too familiar with the wc2 days so not sure

oh yeh, KingHillBilly was big in SC2 beta too for awhile, but quit suddenly.

I'm far from a noteable presence on the competitive scene, but I fondly remember playing Warcraft 2 on Kali.
And the days when Total Annihilation looked to be the competitive RTS, nigh untouchable.
And discovering the power of 150 mineral spawning pools, canon rushes, etc. in pre-BW SC.
It'd be kinda interesting to see if people drop by with their old RTS start.
Personally, I started with Dune 2. It was very clunky, but at the time was a very fresh take on games, and on that universe.

Oh man I vaguely remember a loooong time ago playing Warcraft 2 on the internet with other people. I was I think 8 at the time so I don't remember much. My screen name back then was orginizm... but I sucked and used cheats.

hahahah I know that aquanda, I'll ask him where the name comes from.

Hey OP, I'm one of those war2 kali-cases ladder players... actually joined TL forums just to find players like you. I played on Kali from around 1995-2002 or so. Was top 50 in cases a few times under several different names (smurfed a lot as a kid). Really enjoyed custom maps like Warfriends, Table9, fgow, Gruntworks, etc. too much to get serious about laddering. Was extremely good at POS low though, for some reason. That's one of the things I really miss from the old days of war2 -- different starting resources. It allowed for strong variance on build order strategy when Orc was clearly overpowered. Add in water maps and you've got yourself a build order fiesta. I play protoss in sc2 and that's one of the things that irks me about the game is that you absolutely must do one of maybe 3-4 openings builds to be competitive -- even a few of those "acceptable" builds are essentially the same with only one building different (3 gate robo or 4gate, etc.). Also the ability to use extra workers to "fast" another building added an added level of precision to every game. Timing was more fluid and not as rigid as in the new game.
In any case, if you want to play some and have a few lulz, I play as Roidrage.997.

back in the days, the [Man] clan dominated the war2 scene on b.net. I remembered how the spawn positions on Garden of War affected how match would be played as well as blocking your opponent mining with mills and then towering him etc. those were the days.

I played on War2 on Kali but once I discovered #Macwarcraft on EFnet I rarely went back. TCP/IP was less laggy than Kali and we had our very own *gasp* chat channel! It was so much better setting up reasonably fair teams in IRC before we played and hanging out with all the players between games. We also learned that some of the Blizzard maps other than GoW were pretty fun. Bridge to bridge combat and No way out of this Maze come to mind. The guy that ported the game over to Mac would come play every once in a while, sometimes with a couple other Blizzard employees. It was interesting to see if they were any good or if they played any differently. Yes they were good and no they played pretty much like the rest of us. A fair number made the transition to Starcraft and we had our own channel on Battlenet but unfortunately chat channels came too late to Starcraft 2 for that to happen.

I remember ~BH~ clan, thats about all I remember.

hehehe. kali. man i feel old.

I did play alot of WC2, before SC2 or BW was out. I used to play with a friend, Levin. Hes top 50 in North America right now... while im just a midrange master
|
I used to play a lot of War2, though not competitively. I did the almost entire Blizzard RTS route, from War2 to SC to War3 (not as seriously) to SC2, only skipping War1.
|
I played a ton of War2 back in the day. Bao Clan on USWest. Played on Heat, Kali, and the Zone as well back in the early 90's before Bnet came out.
If anyone remembers us.. give me a holler .
|
A lot of old school warcraft2 players have tried out sc2, many of them didn't do so hot though.
Warcraft2 evolved a lot after the bnet edition came out, and players got a lot better than they were back on kali/zone/aol/gamestorm/heat though.
It was a great RTS though, a lot better than most people understand because they never played it at it's highest level (not saying they couldn't have, they probably just moved on before bnet edition even came out)
The best warcraft2 player in the history of the game currently plays on the sc2 US ladder and goes by the name tGNeRz.

Ah WC2 and Kali.net, dial-up games versus friends and tying up my parents phoneline for hours in general...oh the memories lol. I played the hell out of that game, and when WC2 BNet Ed. was released, played the hell out of it some more.
|
I played battle.net edition and was the vice-master of a hot clan and ran its website.
|
War2. Hah. Never did anything competitive with it, but it was a blast playing and doing the dial-up thing with friends. It's crazy to think how big Blizzard and eSports have gotten since then.

I remember playing ~BH~Infected. He was good. I played several thousand games on Battle .Net edition.

anyone knows what tillerman is up to?

I never played War2 on Kali, only Starcraft. Participated in a lot of the ladders (cases, tao, I'm there there were others) and did some community work with a comedy/tournament website called simplecraft. I think people consider me old school but there are people like IN / PH / 88 who were like the top tier old school when I was just a lowly noob begging them for ladder games.
|
I definitely played some friendly War2 with a buddy over dial up. I never understood why you could build walls when I did that but I couldn't in regular games. It bothers me to this day.
