source? I was always under the impression it was online only.

My source is Tasteless and Artosis, They have said many times they do the player interviews during breaks in which the commercials are on during the korean TV broadcast, listen when they talk.
Edit: They also said while they were explaining Code S format that it is not a round robin tournament "setting" or "system" because when you are on TV you dont have an option to extend your time.

Take it from someone who lives in Korea- GomTV is internet only. They have no corresponding regular TV channel. The only two game channels in Korea are Ongamenet and MBCGame and they are not broadcasting the GSL.

They have commercials on their stream, it's not on TV. And it's not like they can control for how long games will play anyway, most sports that is shown on TV can extend past the expected time and delay upcoming shows, happens all the time in soccer with overtime etc.

Not commercials on their stream.... What are you talking about? When Artosis is giving his interviews that is when the korean TV is on a commercial break. Look at the backround as well and you will see the commercials playing. Go through the VoD list if you want to find out I assure you its on TV.

^is right.
If GOM were able to broadcast GSL on TV then their income from sponshorships and viewership ratings would increase atleast compared to now.
Too bad that negotiation with OGN went broke else it'd have boosted the GSL popularity.

You sir aren't a starcraft fan! And with time when greats of sc2 arise you will want to see them day after day, That's like saying If you could see Flash, Jaedong, Stork, And bisu play for a shit ton of money every month you would lose interest? Just doesn't make any sense, The game is 6 months old and needs some more adjustments no doubt.

What does not liking gsl have to do with not being a StarCraft fan? OSL, MSL and PL are StarCraft leagues. Gsl is an sc2 league. StarCraft 2 =/= StarCraft.

And what he said makes perfect sense. The reason why events like the World Cup or Champions League are so hyped and people enjoy them so much is because they are so rare.

Some of us just dont have time to watch all the matches... I'm swamped at university at the moment and thus I cant view the first matches and not having a sense of participance I just cant take the time to care about the rest of the matches. Nor pay for them at. (Did have Season2-3 pass)

What I think turns off alot of koreans aswell is favorites dying so early/easily all the time because it atleast turns me off (Nestea in season 3 was painfull). Not having anyone you wish to win takes a toll on the sense of competition.

Very true. Having so many unfamiliar faces competing is an unfortunate and inevitable challenge for GSL at the moment. For example, I know FIFA World Cup would lose a lot of luster if say Honduras, Algeria, Switzerland, and Japan all made it to Semi-Final instead of favorites like Germany, Spain, and Brazil. It's something that will go away as time passes and SC2 establishes its own bonjwas, but right now, we will suffer.
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

I´m sorry for the comments i said earlier about starcraft 1 , but i just wanted to give my opinion and i think we are all free to do that.

SC2 will grow pretty much everywhere , dont sound the alarms because thats not needed , blizzard just makes one game per 2 years for some reason , they know what to do and know how to do it .

i saw comments on the game being a big blob in battles , i wanna say that my friends who play more commercial games like COD , fifa and so on , dont like to play SC2 but really love to see me play or see the GSL games , but if i put a SC1 game on the youtube all of them turn their faces because its ugly or they dont understand . And in SC2 even though they dont play they already understand many things just from seeing SC2 games .

i pretty much stoped watching the GSL.
90% of the games are either cheese&all-in that we have seen 987654 times before or one player completly and utterly dominating the other player.. both not very intresting to watch.

if you count the great games from the past 3 GSL, you probably will not need a second hand to do so.

still a fan of western tournaments, MLG delivers some truely great games, so did the reddit tournament this past weekend.. but korean style of play simply does not do it for me.. dunno.

Ultimately people will not follow a tournament if the players can not attract the attention of the audience through unique gameplay that define themselves, or through attractive or charismatic personal (or physical) characteristics.

Vast majority of SC2 players who are basically newcomers without any reputation or distinguishable characteristics can not grab the audiences. The few whose skills and charisma reach the required levels have exhibited unexpected poor results in the GSL (Fruitdealer, Tester, Clide, Nada etc). The early disqualification of those famed few only serve to alienate the audiences. Just think of an OSL without leessang taekbang with Modesty v.s. Hyuk for the grand final. I doubt that OSL would do much better.

The current GSL players need to establish themselves better. The majority of S code are just nameless scrubs as far as I am concerned. I also would like GOM to rig the brackets...it's nice and fair to do the brackets lottery style...but I am fucking furious that only two of Boxer/NesTea/Tester/Zenio can move on from Ro16 and Jinro Idra have to fight it out early. Dunno about you, I'd prefer rigged brackets that produce a good games and good finals.

A team league is also absolutely necessary.

Also, I don't really know what GOM was thinking when it rented out a 5000 people stadium. I don't ever remember a OSL/MSL opening ceremony being the central attraction of the tournament. It's not a beauty pageant (and may be in fact, the opposite of a beauty pageant) and I think people can see their favorite players through the monitor screen just fine.

That post was also very much inappropriate and not at all representative. Artosis on his FB QnA dismantled the idea of low attendance being an actual issue.

If you want to read why I wont take the hits from Artosis but look at his sites QnA about the GSL's attendance. *hint it has to do w/ -15 C temps and being in the middle of bum fuck korea no where.*

They did have some kind of cable deal for GSL2 tho, broadcasting between 6 and 8. Not sure who was behind that but I watched it on TV several times at the oGs house. Duno what happened.

Gom is in the business of INTERNET TV. They broadcast a shitload of stuff through their player, the GOMPLAYER, which is one of the most widespread players in the world.

They do not broadcast through regular TV at this time.

Whoa whoa whoa! No one is saying SC2 will die around the world (at least I hope not). Its obvious that BW was "dead" (I say that in parenthesis because as long as the community supports it, it will never die <3) everywhere else but Korea and niche communities like TL (pro gaming wise). And its also obvious that SC2 is a HIT in North America and Europe (and elsewhere). I'm sure we can all agree on that (right?).

The real discussion is very specific. The popularity of the SC2(or GSL) progaming scene in Korea. And as documented by many on this thread, there are TONS of factors to consider with regard to the "apparent" popularity (using audience numbers as some kind of approximation, which is somewhat flawed.)

And quite frankly, anyone who is shocked that SC2/GSL isn't a mega super duper esports hit in Korea is quite naive to think that all attention would be taken from pro BW (practically a Korean pastime) ESPECIALLY while legends in the making like Flash and Jaedong have yet to complete their epic rivalry. All this on top of the fact that it has only been out for 6 months (I hate to say "take down broodwar" because my ultimate dream is to have both a BW and SC2 scene in Korea. And you have to admit, BW is pretty freaking epic at this point.).

With the new maps, it should be interesting to see how the Korean style of SC2 changes in the GSL. I am excited for the possibilities of SC2 (especially since its so young and is still vanilla), so I am not bothered or surprised by the fact that BW is still better. That's what we are here for, to help improve it! right? Hopefully it will become at least as good as BW when it is "complete." Until then, we must continue critiquing it honestly (with the new maps, progress is being made!).
BW is God!

I'm not looking to purely blame Blizz for this, but their actions in restricting the use of SC2 in Korea has resulted in serious damage to the game's growth. There's zero TV presence and entirely too many restrictions in comparison to what the market there is willing to deal with. The gamble they made was, "our brand is so strong that we can do whatever we want," but i think they might have overestimated things.

Blizzard's bid at short term profit could be causing long term damage

They've made their money. They probably don't give a fuck anymore and just want to focus on WoW.

No they haven't there are 2 more expansions coming up and think about the money they get if they get sc2 broadcasted since it's their IP ( if they win the case v OGN and MBC that is ).

And what restrictions are you talking about jackrandomsx??
