code s = tourney (well the real tourney kind of starts at ro16), code a = preliminaries for the next tourney basically. kind of wacky but they're cramping this stuff pretty close together it seems.

Maybe sc2 isn't as fun to watch for people who don't play the game.

IMO blizz needs to get their act together. Better maps will result in consistently better games. Has anyone noticed that the best games are always on meta or shakuras and the worst ones are on steppes?

But blizz can be very stubborn, as we all know.

I think it would be incredibly weird if this decline didn't happen. With every major game release, there is a lot of hype and after a while you see a decline in players until the fanbase stabilizes. I believe the same thing can be applied to the esports side of the matter. With all the hype of a new Starcraft game, the new GSL, all the famous players playing in such a large Starcraft 2 tournament for the first time etc. of course there are going to be large numbers of viewers. After things calm down a little bit, most players still watching will be in it for the long haul and that is when the scene can truly start to grow. It will then be growing of a stable foundation and not hyped up people watching because it's the game of the month.

P.S. mprs, thanks for your long post, I enjoyed reading it.

umm, TL isnt a starcraft 2 site. Its a site dedicated to starcraft pro gaming. The site is built around following professional starcraft. And you wonder why we might stress it a bit?

GomTV are in a situation where their success will be measured against OnGameNet, MBCGame, and the Brood War e-Sports model in general.

They are partly responsible for this situation, because they have tried to certain aspects of Brood War model whole-scale (they even tried/are trying to get a TV deal). You can't really blame them for this, because it's Stacraft II after all, and there are certain things fans (and perhaps GomTV workers, subconsciously) expect from such a word. And on paper at least, you want to emulate the most successful e-Sports model that has existed so far in Korea.

It's a real trap for GomTV. Benchmarking yourself against a high quality product can definitely be a good way to improve the quality of your own product, but you run the risk of being perceived as a not-quite-as-good imitation.

There's more to it than that though. This is GOM Tv's problem but only in the most superficial way. I wouldn't trust Gom Tv to run a hot dog stand, and giving them exclusive rights to the most famous RTS lineage in history never seemed like a sound business decision to begin with.

As usual this goes back to the way that Blizzard approached (or shunned, perhaps) the whole idea of Starcraft as an esport. They clearly have either never understood it, or have never cared for it. Were the Korean esports scene important to them, they wouldn't have ham-handedly tried to shut down the BW scene, nor would they have entrusted the success of Sc2 to an officious and cumbersome company that continues to make elementary business mistakes despite having a massive ten year case study to examine.

The lack of success for Sc2 at this moment has little to do with time, money, or exposure, and everything to do with a malignant lack of interest from Activision Blizzard.

EDIT: And lets not forget that this pertains to competition outside of Korea as well. A lack of LAN support crippled MLG Dallas, the tremendously long waiting time apparently required to get permission to host a Sc2 tournament, and the fact that TL has to get user's guest accounts every time we host a TL open... What do they even do over there?

I think it's because of the qualifications, no one really wants to watch qualifiers unless a big name is competing. Even in BW, those qualifications are usually not broadcasted because they wouldn't have many viewers. I think once these qualifications are finished, and players are played in the main tournament, people will flock to watch.
Venture Capital is better off spent on lottery tickets rather than investing in E-Sports; you'll get a far better return. The difference is simple: Koreans are tryharding at the game, foreigners are tryharding in real-life.

As stubborn as a mule.

Oh shiit.

But seriously they are going at it in a slow manner, cause they obviously dont wanna screw up in the process of it, which would give bad reputation on their behalf.

yeah I'm on a Boat and I just had sex has 2 million views so it's not much.. Still I'm pretty optimistic that SC 2 will get bigger. Just needs to change some stuff like new maps and non cheesy plays
I don't think I've ever wished my opponent good luck prior to a game. When I play, I play to win. I hope every opponent I ever have is cursed with fucking terrible luck. I hope they're stuck playing underneath a stepladder with a black cat in attendance a

Not only for BW's awesome matches, but I had the impression that a lot of people watch BW because it's about the players as well, with fan girls on their jocks, and male nerds jealous of their stardom or skill. I mean don't the BW players get plastic surgery just to look cute for camera? How come GSL isn't doing that....

I loled.

Gotta admit, reaver drops, lurker holds, vulture mine drags, etc. were fucking epic moments, a lot more so than... herp derp banelings roll into 50 marines over and over again.

The fact that I can still watch Starcraft or Starcraft 2 professionals play period just continues to amaze and excite me. Would it be awesome if 10,000 showed up to the GSL Code S final? Of course. Would it still be awesome if 10 people showed up? Yes!

Both games are awesome to play and watch. And I don't think we should let things like viewership take away from our joy of watching them. If only 2 other people played Starcraft, I'd still be there observing them. Just keep a positive attitude, and have some fun. Starcraft will still be there no matter what happens.

I think what needs to happen in korea is team leagues proleague style. I'm sorry but this winners league stuff has got to go its just not as exciting imo.

I think if Gom were to start a proleague with like 4 1v1's and an ace match just like bw and then individual leagues with that. I think that would increase popularity a lot but here goes to wishing for that style again...
When I think of something else, something will go here

Okay.. i trust you.. because noone else in this forum would have watched the games.. especially not almost all of them!!!! :O

/sarcasm

The players are just implementing the most effective strategies available to them at this time; there have been some epic moments, there have been some lame moments.. as there were in any other competitive game..

Games are too short , well atleast the Majority.Unless we get long , epic macro games like BW SC2 will not be getting up there in popularity.

The other factors are the players.I can honestly say that SC2 will have a huge jump in popularity if the likes of Flash or Jaedong switch over prompting majority of their own fans to switch over . Right now , the only major crowd pullers in sc2 are obviously boxer and nada who themselves find it hard to reach the Final stages of the Tourneys .
Thy Shall Die Alone...or emm..something like that.
