Hi guys, hows it going. I can't be the judge of this because i am too used to Asian cartoons and the drawing style. I am of course generalizing when i say Asian because my experience and knowledge of these cartoons is very minimal, if not none existent. I used to ask myself this question when i was younger but i haven't watched any "Asian" cartoons in awhile till a few days ago and it has got me wondering,
The question, do "Asian" characters in cartoons resemble Asian people or do we just take that as a given now.
Heres an example.
Denver the last dinosaur, an American(i think) cartoon, well at least its supposed to be in the US. Take a look at the characters.
These guys look like Americans, well in that time period anyway.
Whereas lets look at Ponyo, a movie-cartoon i just watched. This is what I, the nooby, categorize as somewhat "Asian" style. You know what i mean, don't nit pick. Do these characters truly look like Asian people or we just believe it cause we got used to it and we take it as a given that these characters are meant to be Asian. I guess the same.
What do u think. Don't close this you mod, its a legitimate not insulting question.

At least never trust the hair to reflect the real life. That's a given.

Well, the biggest difference between Japanese stylization and Western is that Western stylization is very homogenous, whereas Japanese stylization is highly unique between mangaka. Maybe it's just me, but if I didn't know the difference in content between say, Super-Man, Spider-Man and X-Men, I would probably think they would be the same cartoons.
It mostly ends up about eye-detail.
Why I am linking to so many different styles is that I am trying to point to that they all draw the eye in a similar fashion, as in creating the extra wrinkle that Asians have, and it makes them distinctively look somewhat Asian. They also prefer more round faces as opposed to the square faces you often see in Western stylization.

Your question is a really dumb to be honest. If you are asking urself if the asian "cartoon" figures look like real asians then well... why don't you check it yourself ? Have you never seen an asian person before ? O.o
Please be more precise in your question. If you mean the clothing/Hair style/ etc., then your question makes more sense, although it is still put in a dumb way imo.
If you mean the clothing/fashion aspect of ANIME figures: Of course, like in any movie or film, it reflects the authors imagination what fits to the scenary. So the character design is meant ti fit into this scenario. The "style" (drawing style?) is not meant to resemble ethnic origins of the characters. In ANIME americans, asians, europeans, arabs, africans, mostly look nearly the same. It is a question of style, whether the author prefers a more realistic or artistic style etc. Though you can not generalize it, from my experience americans, asians, etc. all look the same in ANIME.

Well, the characterizaction similarity depends a lot on the mangaka, but I guess people mostly refer to the eyes shape, which looks more caucasian than asian in most mangas. My opinion is that generally, they don´t.

My professor said there is no such thing as a dumb question.
Anyway, yes i have seen Asians before. But because I saw so many Asian cartoons/animes i automatically associate them with an Asian look or ethnicity. But i wonder if you get some who has no experience at all with cartoons or drawing. What would they say.
Also, relax man =)

Short answer: For most cartoons, no, not in the least.

Asians in American cartoons have asian stereotypes to distinguish them as Asian. In Asian cartoons, white people have stereotypes to distinguish them as white people.
