It seems to me that a few of the names being thrown around here under the "over" category just shouldn't be. I think anyone who's followed the Korean pro gaming scene for at least the past year would know better than to say TheMarine and Garimto are OVERrated. The upcoming Starleague after the SKY 2002 will be the first Starleague TheMarine will have missed in like almost 2 years (only the very elite in Korea can say that), while Garimto's one of only two players in the history of ogn to have won the Starleague TWICE - the other's Boxer. Their records speak for themselves, but if not, then at the very least the opinions of the pros themselves should. As I mentioned in another thread, Garimto is still the only player that Boxer has publicly and repeatedly mentioned as his ultimate rival, while TheMarine (nevermind that he actually has a winning record v Boxer if you include all of their encounters in ogn, kpga and iTV) is on the "avoid-if-at-all-possible" list of virtually every elite-level pro in Korea.

"But, shit mensrea, they suck so badly these days..." Right. They suck these days. Garimto's busy with war3 and TheMarine's in the worst slump of his gaming career (I'm not exaggerating on this, folks). Doesn't mean they deserve the "overrated" tag. Just means they're not playing like they can or used to, for whatever reason.

In a similar vein, Junwi was never "underrated," precisely because he sucked so much for so long. People had him right the first time. On the other hand, he shouldn't be underestimated NOW, because he's a different player. Joining a pro team can do that to a guy's play. Before, he was a really good amateur who got owned by the pros. Now he's a pro himself and proving himself to be dangerous as hell. Watch for this guy. He's good.

Finally, Sync is perhaps a better candidate for the "over" classification, but I'm not sure if anyone who's won the ogn Starleague and who's won every encounter with Boxer (and also Nada, I think...) in the past 6 months can be "overrated." Yeah, he won the NATE when some of the favs like Boxer and Garimto were in a slump, and he did kinda suck this kpga, but he was unlucky in the ogn, being stuck in the same Group A as Reach and Elky in the round of 8, both players riding a hot streak. We'll see if his "collapse" continues (in which case, I'll be the first in line to holler "OVERRATED") or if he gets respectable results the next ogn and/or kpga (in which case, I'll be tellin' alla yous "I told you so!")...

I think Sync is overrated. He won NATE by partly luck, seing how he went 2-1 in both 16 and 8, then 2-1 to ChRh, then he finally impressed by beating HOT 3-1, but really, he isn't quite "up there".

TheMarine is underrated. Poor guy, been on a slump for a few months (ever since the 'group of death' incident, with eugene, yellow and Hot(?) ) and people is acting like he is the reincarnation of a bgh newbie.

Boxer is underrated. He is GOD, and is over everybody else

It's all very very different depending on how you define "overrated".

Mensrea pretty much said some stuff i was gonna say so im just gonna answer the question:

underrated- garimto (he is the most accomplished toss player and no one even seems to follow him anymore just because hes been in a slump. I think the last time he played like the 'garimto' we came to know and love was in 2001 king of kings, which he had a good shot at winning that was foiled by dissapointing rush losses to gundam). so garimto is still my favorite player and imo possibly the best in the world when hes on.

overrated- there are a lot that i dont think deserve the praise they are getting: sync (won nate when the all the BEST players were in slumps and didnt qualify round of 8 even), chojja (sorry but hes nothing compared to yellow), jinnam (i dont even know why some ppl think he is so good, he was in final vs boxer ages ago and lost 0-3 and hasnt done anything since), elky (luck got him to semifinals of current starleague, got group of 8 without boxer or yellow and possibly easiest group of 16), chrh (hes no longer the "random master" or whatever and he is just relatively unimpressive), oddysay (where did the "best tvt in korea" title come from anyway?), intotherain (hasnt done anything since cocacola starleague [even there he was taken apart by the then non-famous sync], i guess i might be shown wrong here if he qualifies and does well in the next starleague tho), and sonnjang (i guess he isnt highly rated anyway but just to make sure).

Wow, excellent thread. It's nice to see semi-intelligent people making coherent posts. I've grown used to the b.net norm of tasteless flaming.

TaeWoo is NOT Ssamjang. TaeWoo's had some success in the KPGA, but not since the beginning of '02. Ssamjang's been rumored to be trying to make a comeback (along with TheBoy) for a while now, but don't think it's really working out for him. But in his day, he was the player to beat in Korea. Perhaps the first pro gamer to really be considered dominant and the first to put sc on the map popularity wise (the first pro gamer in Korea to have his very own TV commercial: it was for the KORNET isp, for those interested). Definitely Hall of Fame material if we had one for sc and pro gaming...

He did beat Lim Seong Choon (InToTheRain) in one of his 2 games vs him (score 1-1). And I saw a recent (I think) replay of him vs grrrr with Ssamjang winning. There was a post at broodwar.com about the comeback of the boy, ssamjang and one more.

Semi-intelligent people? It's nice to see your ego has been providing a sheild from all the tasteless flaming on battle.net. Either way, there are some very good players who post here and even I object somewhat to being called semi-imtelligent.
