Either way, I hope Blizzard comes down HARD on hacking when it starts popping up. They've invested too much into SC2 multiplayer and have too much laid out for it to let hacking take it over.

What miserable failiures. The presence of hacks also makes the community paranoid and confrontational, which leads to a very hostile and un-enjoyable playing experience. Blizzard needs to employ pre-emptive measures against hacks, and not let them accumulate for ineffectual mass-ban streaks. The damage is already done by then as far as I am concerned.

Crackers will be always a one step ahead. I might be way off here, but I don't remember hearing a lot of talk about maphackers on ICC, and I just assumed that their anti-hack loader worked really well (as in, not 100%, but close). Maybe I was mistaken there. It's true that you can't make a game completely hack proof, but it should be possible to make it really hard to write a cheat, even without putting stuff server side. It might even be so that Blizzard has some decent protection in place, but since SC2 is new game, and a high profile title at that, it's going to bring in the more skilled maphack writers, since these guys are only after fame and recognition.

You'll run into them every now and then and it sucks. i recall blizzard saying that using a maphack = account ban for life. $60 going down the drain for using a map hack is pretty bad if you ask me. perfect antihack =). maybe lower level players will map hack. but top level players in diamond, if they already played hundreds of games, they would not maphack and risk never being able to play sc2 again. i think eventually, maphack will be very rare, and just for low level gamers. top level gamers will absolutely never take the risk.

Tackling hack reports by volume will make this not an issue. Getting reported once out of many games by a noob will be chalked up to envy. Getting reported five games in a row by different opponents, that'll put you on the shit list.

Well, there have been instances in BW where a high level player has been caught maphacking. In reality, I don't think the prospect of losing $60 is what will keep people honest, but rather the risk of becoming outcasts in the community. And even then, there will always be someone who will take the risk. And the "top level players" is not the real issue, for me it's more the high level platinum and low to mid level diamonds that are the real danger. These are annonymous enough that the only consequence will be the $60. This might seem bad enough, but these players usually have enough skill to make it really hard to see that they are cheating. No selecting of stuff they cannot see, no prolonged gazing at Fog of War, etc. And they are good enough to actually make use of the information they get to win the game. If I meet a silver player with maphack in a placement match, I will not care, since I will win anyways.

And Blizzard should step out their anti-hacking mechanism, the system can be hack proof if they wanted to be and put their time and money into it.

It takes away a lot of my will to play knowing that cheaters are out there. Hope Blizzard sues the shoes of the creators. For some people cheating is like "trying to beat the system" (and thus "cool") or simply acceptable as a way of going through society (because their daddy and everyone else who bends rules teaches them through bad examples) and thus kiddies will never stop cheating unless our societies develop some decent values of honor again ... Ever since the 70s nothing a kid does is bad and is excused as being part of the development of their personalities and thus cheating has become tolerated / accepted just like graffiti, parking in the second row, crossing the street on a red light (as a pedestrian) and whatever else. These kids could easily be deterred by a permanent ban.
