seriously what is going to happen? my facebook and wow account get hacked if they are totally lucky?? oh man my world is over! The point is there's no reason to force people to reveal their identity. Lots of people know my name already, that's fine, but I shouldn't be forced to reveal it =/
They aren't forced to. If they have an opinion and want to post on bnet, they are now simply held accountable for that opinion. No one is forcing you to do anything. Please stop spreading that lie. It's horribly dishonest and incorrect.

I can't tell if you're joking or not.
I will say that if I get a letter in my mailbox penned in blood with my social security number, bank account info, pictures of my family gagged in a basement, and also telling me my days are numbered for taking this too lightly, I will admit defeat.
Orrrr... maybe nothing will happen because nobody is going to care enough to do anything to me over a video game argument that I CHOSE TO TAKE PART IN BY POSTING WHERE I KNEW MY FIRST AND LAST NAME WOULD BE REVEALED.
Maybe it won't but it's possible, there are paper or e-trails all over the net. Some aren't even you're regular 'public' pages they are hidden pages like transaction history if sufficiant information is found.
Heaven forbid those things happen but they can. Yes you can choose to take part, but make sure you don't infuriate a crazed whatever.
Something I just thought of, Blizz should enforce a restriction that you can see names after so many posts or something along those lines to stop non active members seeing names. Cause its those people who hold the majority of people who would consider sending threats etc

I love how Blizz takes the most ridiculous and roundabout way of solving problems, I can just see these people thinking "gee, this place is full of trolls and flame wars, maybe we should get some moderators out there to ip ban trolls and send out warnings like all the other working forums on the internet do... nah, its much easier to scare them off by making them give their real name and thus alienate a good number of the regular poster in our community"
Its like "oh look it appears I have a problem with ants in my house, let me call the exterminator... actually on second thought let my try to appease the ant gods with human sacrifices"

You post something there about balance. Someone else posts that your wrong and you have a argument. Now some random person, not even the one you were talking to, can read that thread and decide you're worthy of harassment. They google your name, find your address and phone number, and maybe some of your relatives info as well. That isn't a big deal? It has happened just a month ago. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Counter-Strike-FPS-Knife-Fight,10543.htmlThe fact is that a situation like that will be extremely rare. But there are crazy people out there and I would rather not give them the opportunity. Anything horrible can happen to you at any time, and there's nothing you can do about it. And if someone is that dedicated, having your real name hidden will not realistically stop them. I'd say that it would be worse if they could get your email. Yes, but many things you cant do anything about. This is 100% preventable and that's what I don't like. Putting your name upfront just makes it easier.
It is easier, so that means that people in general are going to do it more? Do I just have too much faith in people? Should I be a cynic? I know it's in the interest of being safe and not necessarily cynical to want to keep your real name hidden, but you will get stalked if someone is crazy (or trying to prove a point) and you can't do anything about it regardless.
The point I'm making is, if someone is willing to take 6-7 months of planning (such as the CS stabbing) to screw you over, they are really screwed up and as unfortunate as it is, hiding your name on a forum is not going to help you. As far as I know, your Steam ID doesn't display that information. In fact, I don't even think it displays your email, but I don't keep that profile edited because I don't care about it, so if I'm wrong, please correct me.
Yes it's good to be safe on the Internet. You could just not post on the forums if it's that big of a deal. If you really want to use the forums, then you have to accept that fact. But Blizzard won't change it unless the forums become useless or if the model becomes a visible problem.

Update from Bashlok:
One important point which I don't believe has been relayed yet is that the switch to showing RealID on the forums will only happen with the new forum systems we're launching for StarCraft II shortly before its release, and a new forum system for World of Warcraft launching shortly before the release of Cataclysm.
All posts here on the current World of Warcraft forums, or any of our classic Battle.net forums, will remain as-is. They won't (and can't) automatically switch to showing a real first and last name.
All posts in the future on the new forum systems will be an opt-in choice and ample warning will be given that you're posting with your real first and last name.

It's not nothing, LOL.
Its a very heavy handed solution to a problem that would really be better handled by actually moderating the forum. It opens up each user to harassment from any other user, which is completely avoidable by NOT giving the information out. You know, the same system thats used on EVERY other website, ever?
Those of you posting your email in this thread.. have fun when u get 1000 emails from spam bots.

Although I believe this is the right step in reducing the amount of trolls, and useless posts that goes on in their forums, displaying one's Real ID makes absolutely no sense seeing as how one's alias is already associated to their respective CD key. Although displaying one's name isn't a huge deal like many here are making it out to be, it does undoubtedly bring up more potential problems than solutions (scams, identity theft, harassment, stalking, etc.) which is the point most people here are trying to argue and get across to those who are saying it simply doesn't matter at all. Also, another argument lot of people in both this thread and that of Battle.net one as well have been arguing about is that the reasoning behind this move is because it introduces accountability of sorts to the forums, making one think before making a post. However, doesn't the whole one alias per CD key not achieve that same goal to the same extent without breaching one's privacy? Are people honestly going to spend an additional $60 to troll? Really?
All Blizzard had/has to do was have their moderators give out visible temporary/permanent forum bans as it is done here and it would alleviate a lot of the trolling because once retail arrives, one cannot simply just make a new alias/account and be able to continue to troll and/or do whatever it was that was offensive enough to prompt a ban unless they wait out their ban and/or buy another copy of the game.
Personal opinion:
At the end of the day, StarCraft 2 is a game -- not a social network which is what FaceBook and MySpace is for. Blizzard really needs to stop throwing a bunch of things together like IM boxes, FaceBook integration and all this personalizing crap and just bring back and stick with our good ol chat rooms and be done with it. The fact of the matter is, if players wanted to share their private information they'd do so on their own accord. Lastly, I find it amusing how this thread is almost double that of the official one on their battle-net forums lol.

I think blizzard/activision doesn't have any women working on the legal team, where this would post an inconvenience for men, its down right dangerous for some women. There are some serious stalker/pedos out there who would love to track down teenagers information and find them. They mostly don't keep their information private and don't know to and not to say on the internet.
Any responsible parent teaches their children to not talk to strangers. Do you think parents teach their children to use fake names when signing up for accounts for online games like WoW and SCII and future blizzard titles like D3 etc? This is a real privacy liability for teens and pre-teens and a privacy nightmare for parents.

Two things.
1: it's funny that you guys think anyone is going to care enough about you to look you up on the internet and destroy your life. Seriously guys, no one cares. You're not Jason Bourne. You're not James Bond. You're no one, you're a random kid on the internet playing games; no one cares if your first or last name is posted.
2: most of you guys who are freaking out about having your first and last name being posted already have that information (plus much MUCH more) freely available on your facebooks/myspaces.
I'll bite on that earlier challenge - I'm Steven Bonnell II (go fucking figure) and my facebook e-mail is Steven.Bonnell.II@GMail.com
I look forward to anyone who wants to destroy my life.

How many people with asian names will also be harassed with "Are you Korean?!" Not to mention all the racism that can come about from seeing various names and making assumptions.

Show nested quote +Once again, please read the whole thread before asking questions that have already been answered.
You can't expect anyone to sit back and read a twenty page thread, refresh to post and then have another ~10 pages to read. To the person that asked, no your previous posts do not get changed to RealID. Thanks a lot. As that kind gentleman pointed out it can be pretty hard to keep track of everything and it certainly is very time consuming. Also you could just have added the desired piece of information to your post as you have obviously studied this thread.
Anyway, in this case I don't care as long as Blizzard does not continue with this policy even further (if that is even possible). People will know what they are getting into and can think about their stance on the matter before they wisely decide not to post as it clearly is utterly stupid.

The more stupid stuff employers have to try and find out about you, the quicker they'll realize 99% of it isn't worth their time. Plus if you have a job where you're well respected and do good work, but they're biased against gamers, you'd be doing the world a general favor by coming out of the closet. Or Mog house, or whatever.
