Posting this here from the WoW boards because I think it is well stated and am sick of the argument.
Q u o t e: I wonder how many of you have a facebook with your real name attached to it, have no problem with that info being out there all over the internet but get a puckered anus about this
Facebook is SUPPOSED to be full of personal information, much of it what you choose to reveal. It's to network with people you know IRL, for the most part.
WoW is not Facebook. WoW is not a social networking website. Most people on WoW have no desire to reveal their real names through the game, and for good reason. To even try drawing a parallel between the two is sheer idiocy.

IMO, unless you are a complete troll who everyone hates, nobody is going to try to get your personal info or care what your name is. And you doubt that those people exist? It's called 4chan. There's no doubt that something happening would be rare, but I guarantee that it will happen if this goes through. I don't mean to alarm you but unwarranted self-importance is one of the few things that would make them want to do that to you in the first place. The chances of anyone looking you up, much less trying to harass you, are pretty slim. I'm positive that it will happen to somebody on the first day now just based on how much complaining people are doing, but you're not going to get an acid bomb in the mail. I used to be a moderator on a big MMO and the number of serious death threats were quite scary. Im not talking about the odd i will kill you threat I am talking about serious stalking campaigns aimed at trying to find out info using mulitple accounts. Statistically it was still rare but it increases the chances of a drugged up nutter losing it over a 6 pool and finding out you only live up the road.
I don't doubt that you're telling the truth but did you or anyone else you worked with have an actual problem related to this? Some people tried really hard to find out some information about you and... then what? Just curious.

I do not have a facebook account. So I guess that's at least one lol.

The only info I have on facebook is my real name, friends and pictures, I'm not worried about people searching me on facebook because there isn't much to find on it, especially if you're not on my friends list.
Googling on the other hand can reveal more information about me.

A bunch of people like you have already made posts just like the one you made and a few posts later someone posts thier identifying info. I know you think your being clever. Your not. And what is the negative associated with someone posting my "identifying info?" I am not even going to dignify this kind of stupidity with an answer. AKA you have no answer. Nobody cares who I am or who you are. Nothing would happen. LOL I keep forgeting there are still people out there who dont know its important to protect their privacy online. Its nice to meet one finally. Oh and if you want info Yahoo usually runs an article like once a week to remind soccer moms and such about common sense things like this. I'm still waiting for you to tell me what would happen to me because someone knows my first and last name after choosing to reveal it on a video game forum.
Don't tell them, let them be blissfully ignorant of identify theft and blackmail/threats

Here's the situation, unlikely, but 100% possible now when it wasn't before.
You post something there about balance. Someone else posts that your wrong and you have a argument. Now some random person, not even the one you were talking to, can read that thread and decide you're worthy of harassment. They google your name, find your address and phone number, and maybe some of your relatives info as well. That isn't a big deal? It has happened just a month ago. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Counter-Strike-FPS-Knife-Fight,10543.html
The fact is that a situation like that will be extremely rare. But there are crazy people out there and I would rather not give them the opportunity.

This happened in May: Video-game-fanatic-hunts-down-and-stabs-rival-player-who-killed-character-online.htmlForget the "code reds" like this, and focus on smaller things. They're not going to display your date of birth and an image of your credit card. No passport numbers. Don't put anything substantial about yourself online and the most you should ever have to deal with is an inconvenience. And even that is unlikely.

good for you that you seem to have trustworthy employers, still that's not the norm out there, and i don't think when you're applying for any job you'd want to showcase who you are (hobbies etc) but just that you applied for the job and have the requirements to fulfill your contract (that's why the rest is called private)
"I cannot speak to those in other countries as I do not have experience with the laws in those countries."
well.. i have traveled in several... plus companies should have to be able to choose their future employees not force to hire (although not discriminate...tough call)

are you sure you said that? i'm so sorry for you that you have asked for that... but it still goes a long way towards showing that you've been lucky (and i'm certainly happy for you, honest, shit does happen to people), still i'm not one to address hate mail or threats, even less to prove a point
"In regards to mistakes made and long lasting effects, please clarify the mistakes you are referring to in detail and I will reply back with information in detail if what you state is not true."
for example : have you never gone to a demonstration and gotten hit because you were too close to the troublemakers ? or even anywhere whenever just for (justifiably) expressing your discontent? or how bout wrongful arrests (with the shame or ridicule that goes with it), rumors started by mistake (or worse by people's petty considerations) or even hateful people bashing on or even hurting other people on account of having the wrong name at the wrong time and place...
"There's nothing lucky about me. I experience the real world, not the world you see on TV or read about from someone's speculation. I can post my name here: Gregory S. Dodd. That's how 100% I'm sure of the information that's spewed from my mouth. I've worked in HR for a sales call center which gives me the HR experience I'm telling you. If you can't argue my points with valid points, then I'm sorry, I don't see you."
well too bad you're so POed about my post, sorry it got to you this much, and i still hope you remain that positive about your life experience, still honest you don't have to have experienced awful things to understand that the privacy on internet is a necessity, there are a lot of people with awful goals and blizz should'nt be helping them (on account of trolls or any other half ass reason like less moderators to pay), but if you'd have you'd want less people to have to go through it like so many posters said before me, they've got your account number, let them just deal with people that are trouble from that end

I find it so amusing that people keep posting things like this as proof that it doesn't matter, where, meanwhile, in the Blizzard WoW thread, several people have done the same and been met with tons of their personal information: Including relatives and job history.
To argue that you can't get a lot from just someones name is insane, obviously it is incredibly dependent on the common-ness of the name and internet history. Just because you think you are invincible (and you might be!) that doesn't mean there isn't someone who can be really hurt with just their name available. How can you be that short sighted and selfish? Pay attention to what is being said and think about it a second.

I can't tell if you're joking or not.
I will say that if I get a letter in my mailbox penned in blood with my social security number, bank account info, pictures of my family gagged in a basement, and also telling me my days are numbered for taking this too lightly, I will admit defeat.
Orrrr... maybe nothing will happen because nobody is going to care enough to do anything to me over a video game argument that I CHOSE TO TAKE PART IN BY POSTING WHERE I KNEW MY FIRST AND LAST NAME WOULD BE REVEALED.

Blizzard doesn't want you to have arguments. That's the point. Have a debate if you want to, but if you're having an argument that might make somebody want to bother you, then you're doing it wrong.
