I wonder if anyone's ever done any serious research into this. I've seen a few stories here and there about people getting fired/rejected for posting obviously stupid stuff, such as badmouthing their employer, but I've never seen a specific case of someone being rejected because they played a game other than when there are other contributing factors. (Like a guy who applied for some job and tried to use running a WoW guild as leadership experience, who was otherwise poorly qualified.)

IMO, unless you are a complete troll who everyone hates, nobody is going to try to get your personal info or care what your name is. And you doubt that those people exist? It's called 4chan. There's no doubt that something happening would be rare, but I guarantee that it will happen if this goes through. I don't mean to alarm you but unwarranted self-importance is one of the few things that would make them want to do that to you in the first place. The chances of anyone looking you up, much less trying to harass you, are pretty slim. I'm positive that it will happen to somebody on the first day now just based on how much complaining people are doing, but you're not going to get an acid bomb in the mail.
I said it would be rare. But it would have happened eventually since there are crazy people out there, but you're right I bet it will be soon now because of all the complaining.

I guess thats one way to cut down on the number of posts to be read by forum moderators.

Doesn't help when you have a unique name now, does it.

Other players, not you, and Blizzard doesn't have to adhere to their posting guidelines, those are for us. I've posted my own personal info and a map to my house on the WoW forums without being banned for it before.

You guys have the wrong idea. Playing a video game shouldn't have the TINIEST bit of impact on your private life as a human being. It's very unlikely that someone would get stalked, or murdered but it happens. Saying it doesn't is just a bald-faced lie.
This happened in May: Video-game-fanatic-hunts-down-and-stabs-rival-player-who-killed-character-online.html
Forget the "code reds" like this, and focus on smaller things. A business owner who has to decide between two equally qualified job candidates, an angry ex or friend, a keylogger who ruins your name... For what? The possibility that shitty forums might be less shitty? It is just not worth it.

A bunch of people like you have already made posts just like the one you made and a few posts later someone posts thier identifying info. I know you think your being clever. Your not. And what is the negative associated with someone posting my "identifying info?" I am not even going to dignify this kind of stupidity with an answer.
AKA you have no answer.
Nobody cares who I am or who you are. Nothing would happen.

Professional forums have been doing this for years and I don't have a problem with it. Looks like more mindless "I hate the blizzard corporate machine omg sc2 sucks" hate.

I used to be a moderator on a big MMO and the number of serious death threats were quite scary. Im not talking about the odd i will kill you threat I am talking about serious stalking campaigns aimed at trying to find out info using mulitple accounts. Statistically it was still rare but it increases the chances of a drugged up nutter losing it over a 6 pool and finding out you only live up the road.

its ridiculous, i think they should put our facebook screen in front of our name like any teen forum, no seriously this is abusive, I would think before posting shit on those forum ^^ and if everyone do that it would be sucky forum

Do you really think this is reasonable? I've been using the internet for many many years, do you believe anyone with a rich internet history (basically anyone over 20) has the ability to tie up every single loose end? Give me a break. So have I. But seriously I don't see the big issue unless you got something big to hide. Again. Patrick Francis Soulliere II
Holy shit, you have an awesome name =)

How many of you complaining about privacy have a facebook? You can be as private with it as you want, but I can almost guarantee you at some point during their privacy changes, most of your information got stored in a cache out there somewhere. Does it really seem reasonable to be so worried about posting under your real name on an SC forum when many more intimate details of your life are assuredly out there already?

The concern is linking the two, not that it exists in the first place on facebook.

LOL
I keep forgeting there are still people out there who dont know its important to protect their privacy online. Its nice to meet one finally. Oh and if you want info Yahoo usually runs an article like once a week to remind soccer moms and such about common sense things like this.
P.S. Its also a bad idea to watch porn at work. Dont do it.

I'm still waiting for you to tell me what would happen to me because someone knows my first and last name after choosing to reveal it on a video game forum.

Mentioned this on another forum but no one took up the challenge. If you're cool with this change please include your first and last name, email address, bnet account name, and facebook profile.
In the meantime, you can get as much info as you want off the following hints: Offhand, United States.
Thanks!
