I'd say the average employer is more like a guy with a lot of subordinates of lesser ages who do these sorts of things for him. And the people who do those things are probably more interested in your work history or your portfolio or whatever than whether or not you play Starcraft. Maybe once in a while an HR person finds some super embarrassing photo or something but that is definitely not a common reason why someone doesn't get hired. If it's getting more common it's because people are posting things without thinking about it. On July 07 2010 02:03 SichuanPanda wrote: This goes against the entire spirit of the internet. You should be allowed to make a pseudonym that is not linked in anyway to your real name, and say whatever the fuck you want. That's the point of forums and the internet, and if companies follow in Blizzard's footsteps they are going to ruin it for all of us. I really can't believe a internet user especially one on TL, would agree with such a foolish attempt to get used to use Facebook or other social networking features. Guess what? When I log on SC2 I want to see the people I PLAY SC2 with, not the hundreds of IRL friends from Facebook, and not all the people on my MSN list. Many of them actually HATE Starcraft, and RTS games in general, but rest assured they would still interrupt me in-game to talk about something trivial (which is what most of my Facebook convos are). There is a time and a place for small talk, and that is AFTER I'm done playing for the day and I go on Facebook or MSN. Simple as this - we should have an option. Being forced to use or not to use Real ID is not fair at all, and there is no way it could help improve the experience of being on bnet forums. In fact it would probably be worse because people will attribute everything you say on there to be your IRL personality, which in many cases is not the same as people's forum personality. I like how you associate your personal view on the internet with what the internet "is for" as if it wasn't designed for something completely different from what it is mostly used for today. Again, it is the law that everyone in Korea has to use their real name on every major website they register for. This is a fairly recent law but it is the law. Just because it's always been a certain way for you and you like it that way, it doesn't mean that you can declare that it should be that way. Times change. You have a choice. Post on the forum or do not. And if you do, stop having a "forum personality" and just act like a human being. I don't use Facebook, by the way. If you for some reason think it is necessary to create a permanent link between you and everyone you know, and update them on everything you do, well, that's your business. But I have nothing to integrate my game playing with so I am disinterested in that argument. If you searched for my name you might find an ancient livejournal post by some guy saying that I was a "weird kid" and a page that says how many honours I graduated with. I couldn't care less if there was one more page that featured me asking a question about DirectX requirements or something. I'm sure somebody will say "well what if I put your real name on all of the stuff you posted under an alias" but the fact is I wouldn't have posted about 95% of that stuff if my real name was going to be on it as I am sure many of you could guess. And I wouldn't miss most of it either, because it would be a bunch of inconsequential posts like this one. Nobody needs to state their opinion at all hours of the day. I think people are starting to forget that. Anyway, if you want to say something off the record, then don't create a record of it.

I'm pelased with their response. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q u o t e: One important point which I don't believe has been relayed yet is that the switch to showing RealID on the forums will only happen with the new forum systems we're launching for StarCraft II shortly before its release, and a new forum system for World of Warcraft launching shortly before the release of Cataclysm. All posts here on the current World of Warcraft forums, or any of our classic Battle.net forums, will remain as-is. They won't (and can't) automatically switch to showing a real first and last name. All posts in the future on the new forum systems will be an opt-in choice and ample warning will be given that you're posting with your real first and last name. I was glad to see this, but I am greatly annoyed that I am unable to change my contact information on battlenet, everything is editable but first and last name. What the fuck Blizzard? I have lots of accounts tied to this email address so making a new account is out. I would prefer to change my name for the incoming change...

Didn't think so If you are honestly expecting a new answer, you probably won't get one because a post like this is a little bit late to the party, I suggest backing up a few pages to get the answer if this isn't a hypothetical.

If you really don't think it's an issue you would be willing to do it, since when blizzard starts handing full names out it will be easy enough to discover this information. Oh yeah ... and random jerk off can run a full background check on you too if he wants to pay a few bucks. Hi, I see you live in the United States. The population is around 306 million people. Do you really think out of 306 million people you are the only one with your current name?

I don't see why anyone would have thought that names were going to be retroactively attached to old posts. And I'm pretty sure you can't change your name because they knew you would want to change your name. Haha.

So yeah, people could find me quite easily ... as well as my dad. Sounds like a dynamite time to me.

My last name is incredibly rare, and my first isn't exactly common either. Googling my name brings me straight to my graduation info and other things.
