hydras and roaches always have had melee attacks. the dps is exactly the same, it is merely an athestic feature.
When they see MC Probe, all the ladies disrobe.

Its nothing new, dustin browder was also asked about this in a interview, he said its simply the same thing but only with a different animation

In the depths of my SC2 newbdom, I did upgrade zerg melee attacks at least once in order to improve the melee attack for the roach. 'Cause it clearly has one, right? I get the aesthetic reasoning, but it's potentially confusing to newbs.

It looks pretty cool just because hydras have long forearm blade things and never really put them to use.

So even though it's a melee animation it registers as an ranged?

This has been in the game since at least battle report 2. There was a point in the game when david kim was getting pinned in the corner by that lower right high yield, and a hydralisk did a melee animation on an auto turret. Like other have said, it's merely an animation and counts the same as their normal ranged attack.

I love how wild and durty the hydra gets when doing some smashing and slashing.

I'm guessing Guardan Shield still works even tho they attack in melee when close.

The PDD does not stop the hydralisk's melee attack, might be useful is rare cases.

Wow. That could lead to some exceptional pimpest plays. Or at least some funny moments in 2v2s where hydras kill melee units even under enemy pdds.

Same damage & rate of fire, the only difference is the animation, and that it can't be shot down by point defense drones.

Technically the PDD only stops projectile attacks and not ranged attacks. So even though it is considered ranged it is no longer a projectile.

Guardian Shield affects ranged attacks but not "splash" attacks so it should still work in this case.

I knew about this already but had never seen the animation. I always thought that Blizzard should really take advantage of this and change it to melee and make the damage higher. Could even have a melee icon that you can right click to activate(like you would when switching to autocast on spells). Would lead to some awesome micro and add uniqueness to the hydra

No, the PDD needs to be able to hit a projectile with it's projectile. A stalkers attack will likely not be intercepted from Melee range either. Reason being, the projectile makes contact with the target before the PDD's projectile can intercept it.
I have not tested this, but that would be my interpretation. Try putting a PDD right on top of the meleeing Hydralisk... maybe.
I think this is a tiny balance issue at best. The fact is, you need very minor micro to avoid Hydralisks meleeing.
