Ok, I've watched all sorts streams with all sorts of casters. I have to vote TotalBiscuit (he typically casts on http://www.ustream.tv/channel/shoutcraft) as the best caster of them all. I would even go as far to say if there are any major SC2 tournaments, that he be hired to cast them - for instance, WCG. Feels like I'm listening to Premier League casters when I listen to TotalBiscuit!

Second is probably Duke Nukem. I don't know if Duke is casting SC2 games, but he makes my list for second best caster. Duke just needs an English accent to be complete

So, who is your favorite caster?

I'll post a poll later when I get enough responses of casters in this thread.

Day9

Why not start a "best casters besides Day9" thread? you'll get better responses

I watched totalbiscuit and hes really good for that style of commentary; I just like Day9's style more, personally

TotalBiscuit says "to be honest" reflexively. It's way too often. I like him, though. I would watch him more if he didn't do that. I like Day9.

The Plott brothers are my favorite. Day 9 is better at analyzing but there is a reason Tasteless is the one who casts for a living.

Day9 is by far the best commentator. You can hear/see his passion about this game, plus he's a great player, too. He just needs to learn how to shave and he'll be perfect.

Day 9 is really good, I like husky + HD as well. There are really some great casters out there, and there are plenty of tournements to pick from, so should be more English casts of for instance Kaspersky thingy, and the Starcraft 2 World cup.

For pure entertainment and better speaking TotalBiscuit wins hands down. For good insight and strategy is where the other casters such as day9 and tasteless fall into. IMO

Day9 has the moste knowledge about the game, but sometimes its hard to listen to him.
TheGunrun has the best voice, but is lacking some of the insights of the game. i really expect alot from this guy in the future.

rise is terrible. he never actually understands whats going on, he usually ends up talking about stuff other than the game half the time, and his dogs will inevitably start barking in the middle of a cast.

Tasteless

My favorite comment though has to be whenever Husky describes the queen as punching or slapping around ground units. It makes me laugh every time.

I think there are two important qualities in a caster: the first is depth of knowledge about the game, and the second is the ability to do play-by-play well. The latter shouldn't be underestimated, and it's not just reciting what's happening on screen: it's all about being able to narrate a compelling story, and convey excitement while doing so. A little humor is important. Even having a good voice is part of this.

So being a good analyst and a compelling play-by-play guy are important parts of being a caster. It's rare to see both of these skills together, which is one reason why you see pro sports matches on TV and radio have multiple broadcasters, with a division of responsibilities between the "analyst" and the "play-by-play guy".

I think Day[9] is the only caster which has *both* of these qualities down pat. He is obviously really good at providing deep insights into the game and helping mid-level players understand high-level play, but just take a look at his recent daily where he narrated a 2v2 among his housemates to see how much of an entertaining play-by-play guy he can be. That's why he's such a great caster.

In comparison, many more casters are stronger in one or the other. HDStarcraft gets a lot of flak here for the depth of his knowledge, but I think he's a tremendously great play-by-play guy, perhaps the best out there. (Husky is good at play-by-play too, if sometimes a bit to heavy on the sarcasm) On the other extreme, Gretorp is super-knowledgeable and insightful with his analysis, but I find him pretty boring as a play-by-play guy. I don't know if he was just really tired having to wake up early for the Europe-Asia showmatches, but whenever he talked his voice made me want to fall asleep...partly because *I* was tired after waking up early for the Europe-Asia showmatches.

I havent been watching starcraft 2 commentated games because I have been busy playing, but it seems like day 9 is the best so far, as he is not to shabby as a player. I am definetly looking forward to watch a few Tasteless shows (maybe artosis to, come on, we all know artosis is going to pop in a couple of times^^)

TotalBiscuit (aka TotalHalibut, who did some let's plays on youtube/SA) is an outstanding commentator. Unfortunately, last I saw he didn't have a whole lot of SC2 knowledge. But he's a very adept speaker.

1 day9 - so incredibly informative and a fun dude to listen to
2 totalbiscuit - highly entertaining, always fresh and fun
3 psyonic reaver - allround good stuff, nice to watch him play too
4 HD + husky (they tend to repeat themselves alot and gets fairly annoying lately)

Personally I like when lzgamer and louder cast because they seem to provide a more player type of response instead of just straight up saying what is going on.
They understand why everything is going on and provide good analysis about the different builds that players are doing.

I think Day9 loses his analytical abilities whenever he does a normal cast. Everyhing the players do is BRILLIANT or, in some cases, ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.

He's been kinda good together wtih Gretorp, though, because they can analyze together and Gretorp seems knowledgable and has a really pleasant voice.

Almost everyone here just picks day9.

I think a better question would be... what is your fav casting pair...

mine will be day9 and Gretorp

Or if we break into categories:
- best insights: day9, gretorp
- best voice: thegunrun, orb
- most entertaining: husky

I agree. Like one of the players dances a little and it turns into a HUGE micro effort I have a friend that gets really annoyed whenever this happens :D (he's also dissapointed with the lack of micro)

Hmm....

I'd have to say the Raven.

PDD rapes anything, it detects, and can use auto turrets.

Much better than Storm or FG.

: P

Seriously, though, I love Day9!

You never forget your first Tasteless soloing the Star League on GOMTV was immense. So he get's my favourite, as for current caster, yeah it's got to be Day9.

I find Day[9] to be really good, he's by far my favorite. Less so in live games but together with Gretorp he's doing fine. Chill is kind of nice as well.

I can't stand either HDStarcraft or Husky for some reason, I always just turn off the sounds in the HDH and listen to music instead.

artosis has always been one of the great shoutcasters. djwheat is always entertaining even his knowledge is quite as in depth. i really want to hear some tasteless sc2 shoutcasts.

Almost everyone here just picks day9.

I think a better question would be... what is your fav casting pair...

mine will be day9 and Gretorp

Or if we break into categories:
- best insights: day9, gretorp
- best voice: thegunrun, orb
- most entertaining: husky

entertaining I have to say that husky has been overtaken by TotalBiscuit from ShoutCraft
some of his comments are just ridiculous also best voice should be his as well just because of that British accent ^^
as for best insight and just very informative u cant beat day[9]
weapon of choice with djWeat and Chill also very nice

AH there are just too many very good casters :D

Day9 for the win.

Second place must be the Husky and HD duo, they are both entertaining and provide game knowledge and insight.

Day9 ofc.. Absolutly nothing comes close - he can have absolutly great co-casters but he's in a league of his own.. With his brother, once we see him back

All about Gretorp. I don't even play Terran (yet) and the insights are very helpful.

Yea Day9 is boss.

I really liked the Day9 and djWHEAT combo on, I think, the TLI. Wheat did good play-by-play and Day9 did the more in depth stuff.

+3 +4 knowledge/insight
+3 execution/presentation.

hes beyond fully upgraded, man.
Bronze skipping straight to Diamond in 40 games retail release. Bnet 2.0 ladder really takes it's sweet time to think about that league placement.

Day9, THE GUN RUN!!! IN ALL CAPS!, Rise, Gretorp are my TOP4. I love them all so much.

Once Tasteless starts casting some tournaments, which in Artosis' site he said he will soon, this list could soon change .

I love that terrible terrible damage though.

I have to cast my vote for Sean, he just puts a big smile on my face when he's making
stupid jokes and finding the smallest things so funny

Him and Gretorp are an amazing casting duo aswell, loved the asia vs eu showmatch, can't
wait for this weekends cast!

I have to mention HD and husky aswell, altho I have come to dislike Husky quite abit when
he's analysing his 2v2 games where he gets put up with lesser players, just really hate
when people turn that elitist attitude on and bash on them. Sean had alot better perspective
approaching lesser players when he casted his roomates game which I found to be just
as enjoyable as watching him cast high-end platinum play.

Chill and Diggity are also pretty far up there! Can't say I can name tasteless and artosis quite yet seeing as they haven't casted really anything since sc2, they were great back in broodward tho. But I'm only gonna base my perspective on sc2, so here it is!

I vote for day9, why didn't you make a poll?

Tasteless is the English version of the MSL casters, I really hope GOM gets him back for SC2 tournaments.
