if he was on a better team that had a better training facility in his earlier years

Free's builds today were brilliant in their timing. His one vs Reach took advantage of being at a disadvantage, he outproduced Reach and then forced reach to engage him from the low ground, he could only have done this had he realized that Reach was going to expand due to feeling ahead from both the failed DT rush and taking out 4 probes with his own DTs. The difference here is that taking out 2 probes for 2 dts, while a bad trade for Free, was not game breaking, especially due to having a similar timing on his expansion. But 4 probes for Reach was not really that much of an advantage - he invested 600/400 minerals and gas for the shuttle, and 250/200 for the DTs (maybe more), and did 200 minerals worth of damage with them. Reach clearly had a far worse harassment than Free, although neither was particularly successful. Going reavers would probably have made far more sense on Reachs part, although Free was clearly prepared with his goons.

The earlier storms Free gained due to his failed dt harass were critical in winning the engagements in the midgame - Reach morphed two archons, I'm assuming because he had a later templar archives, and losing the storms of 4 templar can help to explain why it seemed like he was incredibly outclassed in every battle, in addition to the superior positioning of Free. People have already discussed the 10 gateway to 5 gateway concept.

Vs Anytime his build resulted in the massed army moving out right as Anytime's observer arrived at his natural - completely missing Frees army by about 2 seconds. This deprivation of intel totally canceled out the point of Anytime's build order, and instead used it against Anytime. Notice how Free placed the robotics bay as far away from his natural as possible - Anytime had to travel that far into Free's base to know what kind of tech he was facing, and at that point, Free's army was knocking at his door. Anytime had no way of gauging the strength of Free's army, or he would almost assuredly have canceled his natural and retreated behind the narrow choke into his base. He couldn't even be sure that Free had moved out. Skimping the observer was a risky move by Free, but it clearly payed off. That Anytime panicked and attacked a reaver with probes is indicative of the success of the build - Anytime is a veteran pvp'er, and was entirely taken by surprise by this.

Well, that didn't happen. And I guess he's not "average," as in, 50th percentile. He's eternally "pretty good." But this speaks volumes I think
