Hello Everyone,
This is the official thread of the ALL-STAR TEAM BATTLE for the Coach-Pupil League. If you're unfamiliar with the CPL you can find out more information here or check out the CPL Grand Finals here.
You thought we were done at the Grand Finals? Think again! The CPL makes one more appearance with a special event, the ALL-STAR TEAM BATTLE. An epic match of DARK versus EVIL awaits us next week. We invited the best 14 players based on their individual records* throughout the league back for an epic team battle. The top 2 players (evilEye and dark.matter) were each made captain and then picked their teams from the pool of players. The team captains were then tasked with choosing the map for their players to play on, and to choose a team logo and theme song with their team. To top it all off, they were set-up to play each other in the ACE match on Fighting Spirit after their epic WEEK 10 showdown in regular league play.
Will Dark be able to triumph over Evil? Or will the power of Evil prove too much for the Darkness? Tune in on Sunday August 6th to find out!
All games will be played at or before Sunday, Aug 06 7:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00). After the games are played, and replays submitted, the games will be cast where the results will be revealed!
*Fazek was unable to participate so snowfruit took his spot.
**Casting time and information will be provided in the next post.

1st Statistics Post:We're gonna start off light and basic today Throughout the teamleague, these were the winrates for both teams: Team Evil77 W 37 L ~67.54% Winrate Team Dark73 W 41 L ~64.04% Winrate As expected from our All-Stars! Look forward to more statistics and content coming your way tomorrow

Jealous is BW's Stuart Scott.
+1 for this post.

2nd Statistics Post:The ability to predict the line-up of the opposing team based on their roster and map preferences is a key skill that we saw used extensively in both SPL and the CPL. How well did the captains of Team Evil and Team Dark cater to their players' MU preferences, and how accurate were the predictions of the players who requested to be on certain maps? In the following distribution I have collected data on what each player's W/L record is in the match-up they will be playing in the All-Star match, and then summed them for each team, omitting walk-overs and games played vs. Random: Team Evil31 W 13 L ~70.45% Winrate Team Dark18 W 15 L ~54.55% Winrate It seems that collectively, Team Evil has a clear advantage in terms of how the match-ups have panned out! Tomorrow, we will look at more specific numbers 1st InterviewI decided to reach out to a few people you guys should all be familiar with by now, and asked them a couple of questions so that we can get a sense for who the players in the league are, and what their thoughts are on some pertinent issues! First up, we have the captain of Team Dark himself, dark.matter!+ Show Spoiler [Interview] +Q: Please introduce yourself! Anything you're comfortable sharing: dark.matter: I like hot wings with blue cheese.
Q: How long have you been playing StarCraft? dark.matter: 6 months in 2017. I played for about 2 years around 2010.
Q: Why did you pick your main race? dark.matter: Flash. I do like Zerg though. I also liked being the underdog versus Protoss, but now I don’t like it as much lol.
Q: What's your favorite match-up and why? dark.matter: TvT. It feels very cerebral, no spells, just a lot of positioning and tactics.
Q: Who is your favorite progamer? dark.matter: Flash. The god. The almighty. I pray to him 3 times a day.
Q: Favorite co-caster to join me throughout CPL? dark.matter: I like Sayle, I think he’s very curious about the game and very enthusiastic as well.
Q: If you had to run this league, what would you do differently? dark.matter: Nothing really. Maybe if there was some mechanism to assist or enhance less active teams / coaches. Also the broadcasts helped spread the word so I would keep that up. There were a lot of people interested in participating after seeing the games casted.
Q: What do you think about your match and opponent? dark.matter: I think it’s gonna be a good match.
Q: Anything you want to tell them? dark.matter: Buckle up. [Editor's note: oh SHIT!]
Q: Who do you think the best player in the league is? dark.matter: I think most improved is just as important or more important than best. The drag n herb crew came in here in pretty rough shape and we all worked hard on a lot of aspects of our game. So I won’t point out a specific player but big props to the people putting in the work to be better at the best esport in the world :D
Q: Who would you want me to interview next? dark.matter: Dragon
Q: Any final thoughts or shout outs? dark.matter: Shoutouts to YOU jealous, lazersnipe, lmaster for all the great work and making a stronger community. We’re all benefiting from it. Also shoutouts to my coaches drag, seri, beast and our favourite mascot herbmon. Shoutouts to my teammates for keeping it real! There you have it folks! See you tomorrow!

3rd Statistics Post:Having experience against the playstyle of the opponent firsthand is very important. Beyond replays and broadcasts, BW players truly get the best feel for their opponents through direct confrontation. So, which team has come out ahead over the other more often as a whole? I looked at the record each player had vs. each player on the opposing team, and added them together with their teammates. This was the result: Team Evil21 W 6 L ~77.78% Winrate Team Dark6 W 21 L ~22.22% Winrate It follows logically that every game that a member of Team Evil won against a member of Team Dark, that member of Team Dark lost, and vice versa. Hence the mirrored stats - and what a disparity! It seems that historically, the members of Team Evil have fared quite well against the members of Team Dark! It was surprising for me to see some patterns when looking at this data. There was a fair amount of in-fighting in the teams, meaning that there is a very nice distribution of teams represented on both Evil and Dark. For example, out of all the people that evilEye played that are top 15, they are all now on Team Evil, with the exception of dark.matter himself! In other words, evilEye only drafted players who were his former opponents and those that never played him... Perhaps this is no coincidence? 2nd InterviewSpeaking of evilEye, who is of course the captain of Team Evil: I interviewed him yesterday! Take a look: + Show Spoiler [Interview] +Q: Please introduce yourself! Anything you're comfortable sharing: evilEye: Hello! Most of you know me as evilEye. New York is where the heart is. I am your neighborhood-friendly ~100 apm protoss abuser. I am the 8th wonder of BW.
Q: How long have you been playing StarCraft? evilEye: I've been playing for many years....but on and off (mostly off). I used to play mainly on BGH (2;2 / 3;3). Then I switched to low money maps. But BGH is still where it's at.
Q: Why did you pick your main race? evilEye: I picked protoss because I thought they looked futuristic and pretty cool. Also, they were strong as fuck, especially on BGH. Even in sports I'm not a frontrunner and I don't like change. So, whatever I pick first I usually stick with. I actually LOVE playing terran and zerg, though, I am just not fast enough to use them full-time.
Q: What's your favorite match-up and why? evilEye: My favorite match-up to watch (or play as offrace) is TvZ. I love the nonstop battles and the high level play it can yield. My favorite match-up to play is PvP. Since protoss is the best race, it's like an epic battle of Gods. I love that it seems to simple and easy and yet it is actually very complex and intricate and has many layers to it, especially on the mental or meta level.
Q: Who is your favorite progamer? evilEye: There is only one right answer to this question. Stork. He's your favorite programer's favorite progamer.
Q: Favorite co-caster to join me throughout CPL? evilEye: I would have to say SuGo. Not only is he protoss (so I can benefit from some cool insight), but he's an asshole. I mean that as a compliment, by the way. It's refreshing to have someone be blunt and honest; whether you agree or not. I think in BW or in life, if you suck, you should be told you suck and you should own it and either accept it or use it as motivation to change yourself. Fun fact: since SuGo started casting, the BW suicide rate has been steadily increasing by average rate of about 8%.
Q: If you had to run this league, what would you do differently? evilEye: Absolutely nothing. This league is perfect. It's the best god damn league ever created in the history of BW. Fuck what you heard....it's what you're hearing; listen!
Q: What do you think about your match and opponent? evilEye: I am playing PvT on Fighting Spirit vs Dark.Matter. PvT is one of the more enjoyable match-ups to play, but can also be one of the most frustrating at times. I love Fighting Spirit. It is the best map and the most balanced; you are an idiot if you think otherwise. Dark.Matter is my favorite player in the league and so good. I am honored to play him. I want to win but I think I just want to make sure we bring out the best of eachother and put on a good show for all the viewers. That's how we can show our appreciation and give back to the league that gave us so much.
Q: Anything you want to tell them? evilEye: Best of luck, Dark.Matter. I will be rooting for you!
Q: Who do you think the best player in the league is? evilEye: This is so hard to answer because there are so many good players. But if I HAD to pick just one, then I'd probaby say Dark.Matter. Not only is a very good player, but he's constantly improving; that's probably the scariest and the best thing about him.
Q: Who would you want me to interview next? evilEye: I would love for you to interview Julia. There is no such thing as a boring Julia conversation. I love how he can weave a hack and/or lag accusation at anyone in almost any situation. It's really a thing of beauty and he is a master of his craft. He's literally the best at it. Respect.
If you meant from this league specifically, then lazersnipe and jealous. I think sometimes it's cool to turn the camera back at the cameraman and have the people who do most of the work get some shine and attention because really they are the ones who actually deserve it the mostest (it's a word if I say it is).
Q: Any final thoughts or shout outs? evilEye: I have many but I'll try to keep it short (likely won't happen). First and foremost, shout out to lazersnipe for putting together the best damn fucking league ever. This league has been entertaining, educational, and fun. Most of all, there has not been any whiny bitches who cry and moan about every little thing and are annoying as fuck; top foreigners...I am looking at you  Shout out to Jealous and all the casters and organizers and admins; you guys are the secret to this league being so successful. Shout out to my coaches, Faust and Jealous for helping me a lot. Shout out to my team, #t e a m, for being awesome. Shout out to my all-star team, Team Evil. Big shout out to all the players in the league. I loved playing with you guys, I loved watching you guys play, and thank you all for everything...peace and love, bitches! That's all for today, folks! More to come...

4th Statistics Post:Having history with a player will obviously affect how you face them in what is essentially the capstone event of the league. Some of our players have quite a history with their opponents. Check out the line-up in terms of their head-to-head records in official CPL matches: Team Evil 8 - 1 Team Darksnowfruit < TEAMKILL > HaFnium KatjaKean < N/A > f10eQQ DarkNetHunter < N/A > Qikz ArcTimes < N/A > shoopdawooper lazersnipe 4 > 0 DiarrheaTerran PiSan 2 > 0 ProbuA evilEye 2 > 1 dark.matter After compiling all of these statistics, it certainly feels like Team Evil has an advantage in just about every metric against Team Dark! However, don't count Team Dark out - there are a lot of strong players on their side as well, and we can expect some really tight matches tomorrow! Get hype! 3rd InterviewAs requested by dark.matter, I interviewed / DragOn[PaiN], the captain of Drag n' Herb! He had a lot of interesting insights into the game and the league, take a look: + Show Spoiler [Interview] +ChoboSwaggins: Please introduce yourself! Anything you're comfortable sharing:
DragOn[PaiN]: Hi im Alex Empey aka DragOn[PaiN], im Canadian, 28yrs old and I play online poker for a living
ChoboSwaggins: The classic BW Player job!
DragOn[PaiN]: ;p
ChoboSwaggins: How long have you been playing StarCraft?
DragOn[PaiN]: hm I bought the game after playing it at a friends house for like a year (this friend was lazersnipe btw) when I was 14 I think, since then ive been playing it on and off with varying levels of seriousness, so I guess half my life lol
ChoboSwaggins: 14 years then? Quite some time! How did you pick your main race (and ZvP in this case)?
DragOn[PaiN]: I currently play ZvP PvZ PvT although that may change with SCR coming out. Originally I played zerg when i was a newb, I thought it was the weakest race on the surface and wanted to challenge myself by getting good at it. However eventually i grew frustrated with playing terrans, and decided that PvT was less annoying than ZvT, and since i liked zvp so much I wanted to play both sides
ChoboSwaggins: My next question was "what's your favorite match-up and why," but after reading that I'll venture a guess and say that it's ZvP? ^^
DragOn[PaiN]: yeah lol ive been playing it the longest and still understand the least
ChoboSwaggins: What do you think you don't understand/makes it so difficult?
DragOn[PaiN]: Well when Im learning a matchup, I want to determine the optimal stratagy path, along with what my opponent can do to follow a similar path alongside mine, which I refer to as an optimal strategy pair. Basically something that I can do in x situation 100% of the time and the worst case scenario is that Im even with my oponent, assuming I execute it well. Determining the optimal strategy path with zerg is difficult because so many of zergs units can get "hard countered" by protoss units (such as critical number of sairs countering muta) so you have to switch techs at key timings in order to maintain control of the game, and mix in droning in there somewhere..the macro is not as simple as just "keep making workers constantly unless youre going all in". Also zerg and protoss both have a huge arsenal of builds they can choose from so I try to find patterns throughout them to build into a system rather than considering each strategy pair individually.
ChoboSwaggins: o_o;a I can see why you made such a great coach!
DragOn[PaiN]: hah ty
ChoboSwaggins: Let's move on to some... simpler questions. Who is your favorite progamer?
DragOn[PaiN]: jeadong
ChoboSwaggins: Is that the other zerg who was on Hwaseung, outside of Jaedong, MustacheZerg, and OzSucksBallsWithoutMe?
DragOn[PaiN]: yeah, this might not be known to many but he was also a very strong zerg, just possibly overshadowed by those other 3
ChoboSwaggins: Hahaha Favorite co-caster to join me throughout CPL?
DragOn[PaiN]: sugo
ChoboSwaggins: If you had to run this league, what would you do differently?
DragOn[PaiN]: hm not much, I think you guys have done a great job. Originally the league was to have started much sooner though, due to lmaster initiating and then getting too busy to continue work, so I think if the teams had been formed and wed started playing etc sooner, we mightve had less dropouts at the start from people who lost interest. But im happy with the way it turned out, you and lazersnipe really turned it around
ChoboSwaggins: Thanks  We tried! Can I hear your predictions for the All-Star Match?
DragOn[PaiN]: snowfruit < hafnium katja > f10qq DNH > quikz arctimes < shoop lazer > diarrheaterran pisan > probua evileye < dark yes i did just pick all my students to win
ChoboSwaggins:  Speaking of, who do you think is the best player in the league?
DragOn[PaiN]: hm evileye with hafnium strong 2nd
ChoboSwaggins: Don't think it's fazek anymore? xD
DragOn[PaiN]: if we arnt counting fazek
ChoboSwaggins: Hahahaha okay.
DragOn[PaiN]: im not sure how fazek ranks because I have seen much from him lately
ChoboSwaggins: Yea, he hasn't been able to play for over a month ): Anyway, second-to-last question: Do you have any advice for the potential future coaches?
DragOn[PaiN]: interesting question.. well first off, you have to enjoy teaching and learning a lot. Obv every1 enjoys learning, but I think a lot of people are more hands on types that just want to mass game all day and not think much about it, they employ a trial and error approach, which of course works but I found that the biggest jumps in my skill have come from understanding the game more at a theoretical level. If you have the kind of mentality of wanting to solve the game and learning all you can, rather than just increasing speed and doing x and y because better players do it, I think youd be a good teacher. But aside from that, a lot of patience is necessary. Some of my students cough shoop dont seem to listen to me unless i repeat shit 100x, so every1 learns differently i guess. Most important is just wanting to help others improve and investing yourself in their success.
ChoboSwaggins: Wise words to be heeded from the coach of the #1 team in the league  Any final thoughts or shout outs?
DragOn[PaiN]: I want to thank you and lazersnipe for putting in all the work you guys have done to make this league a success. Shoutout to all my students, and especially the core 5 lazer, shoop, pisan, dark and katja! Shoutout to my assistant coaches seriosity and [nm]beast, theyve also put in a lot of time coaching and training with the team. Overall I enjoyed it and ive seen every1 improve a lot so im happy. Also shout out to all the guys who hang out at drag 'n herb on iccup, why not lol
ChoboSwaggins: Thank you for doing the interview!
DragOn[PaiN]: np I will try to squeeze in one more post before the broadcast tomorrow! And then expect a rather large post AFTER the event... See you then!

4th InterviewAs requested by evilEye, I interviewed lazersnipe, the head administrator of CPL! Check it out: + Show Spoiler [Interview] +Q: Please introduce yourself! Anything you're comfortable sharing:
lazersnipe: Hey, I'm lazersnipe, hopefully you all know who I am by now if you're playing in this league. I probably spend too much time on my computer but not enough of it playing BW! When I'm not online I play soccer (aka footy!) on a team with my irl friend and coach in the league DragOn[PaiN].
Q: How long have you been playing StarCraft?
lazersnipe: I've been playing on and off for a long time, close to 15 years. Usually more off than on, and I used to play a lot more ums (I was semi-pro Sniper Paintball player and even lead a clan for it back in the day). Only recently did I start getting more "into the scene", playing 1v1's more and playing a bit more competitively.
Q: How did you pick your main race?
lazersnipe: When I was a bigger noob playing on all the fastest and BGH maps with my friends in school, it was always a race to get BCS and/or Carriers, no other units really mattered. I used to think Protoss was so cool/strong and used to always stomp on DragOn[PaiN] with my mass Carrier play! Protoss just stuck with me from there on, and to be fair, even today it's the only race I could really play as effectively as I can with my lower apm. I have thought Terran might be fun/cool to play sometimes too and enjoy playing as them for fun.(edited)
Q: What's your favorite match-up and why?
lazersnipe: PvT. I think it's definitely my best match-up by far. I feel like I generally understand the flow of the game better than the others. Those closest to me know my struggles and frustrations when it comes to playing PvZ though, that match-up just confuses me.
Q: Who is your favorite progamer?
lazersnipe: Do I have to only pick one? I'd lean toward Bisu as with most tosses. Though I'm a big fan of Best as well, and Nal_Ra will always have a special place in my heart. That said I've always enjoyed Jaedong as well (even before he had established himself), and Savior when he was so dominant.
Q: Favorite co-caster to join me throughout CPL?
lazersnipe: I'd have to say Sayle. Though I also enjoyed hearing my team-mates getting in on the action too - PiSan, dark.matter, and of course our favourite mascot Herbmon for a couple casts!
Q: Who did you want to face in your All-Star match?
lazersnipe: If I had to pick, probably the match-up I got, DiarrheaTerran. That said, I would have been happy to face off against any of the Terrans.
Q: Who did you want to avoid?
lazersnipe: Any op player, aka Zerg. Thankfully there are no Zerg's on the other team, so I was pretty happy about that. From the actual line-up.. probably HaFnium, or any of my Drag 'n Herb teammates.
Q: What do you think about your match and opponent?
lazersnipe: PvT is my favourite to play, so I'm looking forward to it, though the map could be a little tough for the match-up. I've already played DiarrheaTerran twice during league play, so I'm looking forward to meeting him one more time. It almost seems like we have a little rivalry going.
Q: Anything you want to tell them?
lazersnipe: Go easy on me! Haha really though, win or lose I hope we can show a great match.(edited)
Q: Who do you think the best player in the league is?
lazersnipe: Statistics wise I'd have to go with evilEye or dark.matter. That said I would be leaning more toward PiSan, he's pretty strong as well and the highest ranked Zerg in the league. PvZ impossibru! He's also probably the most improved player in the league, which I agree with dark - improvement is the most important part of the league.
Q: Any final thoughts or shout outs?
lazersnipe: A big shoutout to lmaster for starting the league in the first place, and a huge shoutout to Jealous for all the work he's put into it and helping me run things, along with all the casting, I've watched every one! Also a shoutout to my coaches for all the help, and my teammates on Drag 'n Herb! Lastly to everyone who helped with the league, showed their appreciation for it, or just for participating in what I put together, thank you! That's the last bit of info/stats I have! Expect a post announcing the All-Star broadcast going live in about an hour

Thanks for putting together all the interviews, was fun reading them. Looking forward to the cast!
