Hi there,
im playing bw now for quite some time but i cant get any better, even D player beat me. i figured out by now that the basic to successful play is to know and apply the mechanics. so that i can adapt and exploit to the opponent.
but how can i work on my game-understanding? help would be really appreciated
regards, Celial

There is no "secret trick" to become good. Just watch thousands of replays and play a lot of games with the same strategy and analyze your mistakes when you lose, and even when you win.
Like, always siege FE in TvP, always 1 rax CC TvZ, always 3 hatch muta ZvT, etc...
I did that, never thought really, just played.
It's important that you watch replay of your match after you have played it, because you need to know how you lost so you can think about that the next match and try to not lose the same way

yeah cool i could play like other players do, or i know WHY they chose to just build 2 rines before fast expo, or WHY they switch to a 2fac build... i just want to learn WHY you do certain things in certain situations

that comes from experience, which includes watching VODs or playing more. once you understand each unit's strengths and weaknesses, then you can use them depending on the situation. it would be terrible if you only copied people and never really understood WHY pros choose certain units in certain situations.
oh, and if you wanna know why, try it yourself but DONT do it (for example, don't build two rines) and see what happens. if you build none, you might get attacked. if you build too many, then you wasted too much money, etc

Lots of replays to watch, and apply what you see in replays to your game. Play a LOT. And don't be afraid to maybe post a topic with a replay of your game and analyze it, and others will be sure to help.
Also, there are plenty of great guides here on tl that explain your questions as to "WHY DO I DO THIS AND NOT THIS?".

Like everyone else has said, its very experiance based going by your examples. You see the opponents build, and scout that he's drone whoring and only making 2-4 lings, or its far positions so you don't need many rines and should get your expo as fast as possible so you stop at 2 and start cc, then resume later. Basically its getting away with being as greedy as possible, and having just enough units to defend at the right time so you get the econ advantage, without having useless units sitting around.
The more you play, the more strats you will see, and you will figure them out. Say he went 9 pool, you will know that if its close you might have to pull a few scvs to hold ramp, and build cc above nat, or build 4-5 rines before you start cc so you don't get run over. Or he went 12 hatch 11 pool, you can get away with one or two rines then cc, because he wont have the lings to pressure you so there is no need to have rines yet.
