I never lose steam unless games are reeeeeaaaaallly long. I usually feel a bit slow when I'm playing my first game of the day, but after that I get into a pretty consistent groove.

I kinda still do this. If a game goes long I usually slow down and my senses are crap. Though my heart beat use to go crazy during small kinda tense moments, which doesn't happen anymore.

I hate to be the one to say this, but if you're getting tired from macroing (which is just pressing keys on the keyboard) then you probably need to get up. If you're getting tired from pressing keys on the keyboard, you need to begin moving your body.

Get up, walk around, and consider eating/drinking between EVERY game.

I usually dont run out of steam in game, but sometimes after a really long intense game I will feel really drained. Starcraft is tiring!

Its not only physical but also mental stamina that is affected. So take a break sometimes and you'll slowly be able to play more games as time goes. (Do note that your stamina will be affected when you attempt to play at a faster speed beyond your comfort zone)

Try tapping at full capacity, unless you've practice games like stepmania you'll get tired after 4 seconds.

after 30mins, if the game is still going on intensively (which is pretty rare), my shoulder gets kinda tired, so I slow down a little .

I am quite the opposite, I actually ramp up later on during games. On iccup last season it was really weird, if a game went longer than 15 minutes I think I won the game 100% of the time.

I dunno I just get into the groove and just start smashing the keyboard (metaphorically speaking) and seem to win. Which is balanced, because I am TERRIBLE early game. Lol.

I only really slow down in the late game when it's become obvious that I've lost, or at least I think that there is no way I can win.

The only way I slow down late game is if there is nothing to do really which sounds weird but yea I normally don't slow down unless I am just being very lazy

I don't think it's just the physical strain of pressing the keys that's being discussed, but the mental strain of a long game. Hasn't anyone taken a really long exam that they've felt tired after? In a Starcraft game, you have to stay alert to hundreds of different visual and audial stimuli for long periods of time. Obviously a really long session of massgaming is going to tire you out.

Of course, definitely physical exercise is going to help train that, but so is more practice. The more of the actions of the game that go into muscle memory, the less they strain you as you play.

You're wrong, my reply was specifically adressing the guy who said you need to go take a jog (wtf you don't use your legs to macro) if you can't macro. I don't think we disagree.

Edit: To clarify you are wrong about this part: "I don't think it's just the physical strain of pressing the keys that's being discussed". Other than this we're not disagreeing.

For me its not because of how long the game has been going, but because i haven't practiced enough late game. I could spam all day and not slow down, but when the decisions you're making aren't second nature, that time spent thinking about them will slow you down.

Yes, it's normal when you start to get tired or start missing things, simply because early and mid game is easier to manage than late game sometimes. I played a few games last week and I was even sweating in my armpits, but that was in midgame, so maybe my armpits are out of shape?

The macro will come as you play, If you have many, many (like 12K+?) minerals and alot (like 9K+?)but don't make 20 gates if you have only 13 minerals patches and only 1 gas that's not depleted, instead make like 12 or something and spend the money smartly and slowly; and especially try to get another expansion rather than just build build build.
When I did stuff like building 25 production buildings that I always threw my army away by suiciding all my units into his base in hopes of finishing the game, and ran out of money.

Don't forget that mental strain can have a real physical impact too, for instance in a tight situation during play you might be contracting the muscles of certain body parts without you knowing, leading to real physical fatigue.

Yeah me too, although not just playin SC but in general. SC makes it worse. For me its poor blood circulation to my fingers.

I think it has a lot to do with experience for mid and late gameplay. Everyone is well-practiced with their builds for the first few minutes of the game, but once the shit hits the fan your routine is gone and you may lose focus and let your multitask slip. My apm usually drops at least 20% after ten minutes, not including early game spam (then it would be about 60% :p).

If your hands/wrists are actually hurting after games (not sure if that's what you were implying), it is probably because your motions are too tense or frantic. You may be trying to forcefully perform an action faster than you should, and doing this repetitively --> RSI. When you become comfortable with the pace of multitask, your hands will move a lot more smoothly. Consider adjusting mouse settings if it means easier wrist motions.

I find I get multiple tasks accomplished more quickly and efficiently when I focus on what my goals are before executing them.

Practice will obviously make perfect.

As a good analogy consider Guitar Hero, which requires equal (if not more) finger and wrist motion as Starcraft.

When you first play a really hard song, you frantically strum to hit many notes and your fingers are flailing wildly on the buttons because it is too fast for you to read, process, and execute. This type of hand motion REALLY hurts after a 5 minute song. The same song played by a skilled GH player though doesn't hurt, because the player knows exactly how he wants to move his hands seconds in advance.

The challenged player is trying to play catchup and has very little time to interpret new notes, while an experienced player has his hands ready and anticipating the next notes, giving more time to rest and plan out future actions.

I don't think I get tired...usually 30 minute games tend to be the limit for my games...so by the time that it happens, I'm either losing, or I'm winning so I just let myself go for those few minutes before endgame.

Its quite the opposite for me, I am a little tired in the beginning and early mid game but once I get the ball rolling then I'm good for macroing/microing for the rest of the game.

Uh, no, that's BS. You can easily get tired from playing Starcraft - not only because you most your hands extremely fast, but because the amount of focus it takes is mentally draining. The same applies to doing ANYTHING mentally intensive. It doesn't take just necessarily exercise to make someone tired.

If the game is boring, sure, but if I'm actually interested in what's happening I don't slow down at all. Basically it's all about motivation.

As for cold hands, I usually get it during the night or winter anytime. However, I get tired after playing a very long, drawn out game. Mostly with Terrans who turtle the entire game.

LOL comparing guitarhero to starcraft. how foolish.

Give me a break. He is comparing mechanics and muscle memory not the core gameplay. I think its a decent analogy and certainly not an affront to your most cherished game.

It is because you probably are still new enough to the game, so that you have to really "think" about every move you make once you get past early game.

So the answer is yes, this will probably stop after mass gaming (with focus of course).
Because then you will know beforehand and without "thinking" how to react to various situations and macro will be more natural for you.

My hands start to get numb after a long game with intense macro. Maybe I'm starting to get carpel tunnel. I don't even play much SC...

To me it all comes down to mental stamina: playing long games versus people my level is really mind blowing to me sometimes when I reflect on what happened. Not only am I tired mentally, but I start to think, "if I made 1 decision differently than I did, I would have lost." It drains me to play it and to reflect on it.
